(Our own David Menzies is guest hosting tonight)
I had an enlightening run-in on the weekend with local Richmond Hill Liberal Party MP Majid Jowhari.
He was apparently getting a head-start on his re-election campaign, so I caught up with him and tried to engage in some political discourse. Jowhari, you see, has a bit of an affinity for totalitarianism. Not unlike kindred spirit Justin Trudeau and his own admiration for China's “basic dictatorship.”
You may know Jowhari by his nickname “the Persian Pinocchio,” or from the time where he was forced to apologize for falsely describing himself as an engineer despite not having been a licensed one since the 1990s.
I know him as a man who has been tweeting positive congratulations to Iran, one of the biggest state sponsors of terrorism on the planet. But when confronted over his tweets, he bent himself out of shape to blame “fake news” for spreading his support.
Based on my interview with Jowhari, and my previous interview with the Liberal cabinet minister Maryam Monsef, I'm concerned that support for freedom of the press will continue to erode during this election cycle.
