Media barons not satisfied with “paltry” $50M taxpayer bailout

David MenziesMission Specialist

After the recent federal budget, some of your hard-earned tax dollars are going towards propping up the very mainstream media outlets many Canadians have understandably abandoned.

It’s bad enough that $50M in federal taxpayer money is being “invested” to support local journalism, but the recipients of that money are also acting like ingrates and the press barons demanding the government cash, can’t see the conflict of interest it creates.

If readers and advertisers aren’t buying what local papers are selling, why should tax dollars be used to prop up the industry – especially since more than a billion dollars already goes toward supporting the CBC.

Even so, you’d think those receiving a handout would be grateful but apparently not as can be seen from their reactions to the amount they’ve been given.

Poor darlings! All that time spent singing for their supper, and all they have to show for it is a paltry $50M?

Never mind the conflict even though what might be good for a newspaper’s bottom line might prove toxic to journalistic integrity. Or is that integrity for sale these days too?

D. R. Bombay: Your comments about the Red Star left me with no other option than to reply to you. Somehow, I can’t seem to choose between using the Red Star for wrapping up fish guts, containing cage bird droppings or rolling up and slapping politicians across the nose (at least some of them….Doug Ford and Jason Kenney excluded).
All three of your options are so tempting; perhaps we, the Canadian populace, should utilize the Red Star for all three choices!

David seems to have missed the insidiousness of this so-called funding of local journalism. It was never intended to fund mainstream print media. Nor are small town newspapers such as the Guelph Mercury the intended beneficiaries. These funds are going to be directed to local newspapers that speak for special interest groups – ethnic communities, communities of “alphabet” peoples and so forth where the intent is to maintain favour with these communities and control voting blocks. In other words, a Liberal Party propaganda machine all funded by taxpayers and outside of election laws. Really disgusting stuff, imo.

If they take money they have totally compromised any claim to impartiality in their coverage of news events and editorial opinions.
I was treated to my neighbor’s Globe and Mail while she was on holidays. What a sad and breathtaking turn to the left that paper has taken. I’m certainly happy I haven’t wasted my money on any of the leftist socialist rags.
At least we get to call the collective the GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED MEDIA.

I wish I could draw. I’d do a cartoon of the Torstar and Postmedia presidents dressed up as whores parading in front of 24 Sussex, one saying to the other, “Let’s try for another million tonight Dearie. But when you’re done, remember to look fiercely independent!”

The brown-nosing for a larger slice of the bailout pie begins.

Singing the praises of Trudeau while bashing Trump in one fell swoop, that should earn a reward from the Red Tent.

It’s just a pay-and-get-laid scheme, isn’t it? Postmedia and Torstar tart themselves up in red and whisper sweet nothings bout Juthtin , and Juthtin sends our cash their way.

I am insulted by some of the comments here. Being a loyal supporter of the Red Star I buy the Sat star on my way fishing every Sat. It is the best paper that I have found for filleting my catch. Works very well to keep my kitchen counter clean and disposing of the guts and leftovers. I hear it is equally efficient for bird cages and house breaking dogs. It could also be used for rolling up and giving some of our politicians a slap on the nose.

I am sure there are countless things you don’t want your tax dollars spent on if given the choice, but that’s not how taxes work,

My taxes go to things that I don’t support or care about and I accept that because my taxes also go to things that I do support and care greatly about.

We should all have that kind of view and attitude.

Gobbels would be proud of this liberal government’s support for self serving propaganda. How long will Canadians stand for these abominable self serving ruling idiots?

Bailout money isn’t how I want my tax dollars spent, I already feel robbed having to pay for CBC. Will there be an Attestation attached to the corporate welfare funding this budget has set aside?

Bob/Vinny, grants etc… yes, I’m aware of them. Getting them off the ground is one thing, what Trudeau is now doing is buying off the rest of the media.
So, you skipped over the “and some of them still do” without explaining yourself. Why?

Used to think the Soviets had it bad when they just had Pravda propaganda . . .
But here in Canada we have CBC, CTV, Global and a smattering of still surviving Print Media . . . . ALL vying for the position of “Propaganda King” . . . . what they are pushing is trash and lies . . . and of course deliberate Omission of anything they deem not worthy of our ears and eyes.
I believe Canada’s best days are now behind us . . . and our Progressive media is largely to blame!

OK Bob how much are they giving my choice of real news ? No not the propaganda machines you mentioned I mean the Rebel news .
commented 2018-03-08 18:32:18 -0500
Well you see Tammy, with the way media and entertainment is set up in Canada – everyone gets some government money one way or another. I am not talking CBC type of money, but various amounts of money per the need of the media source or project. Some sources need the grants to help them get things off the ground.

So for example, CTV will get some government money to produce the Canadian content that they show on their channels – typically through Telefilm.

Sun News Network, received some government to help launch the channel. The Toronto Sun (where Ezra has worked and all the newspapers in Canada already receive some government funding as being part of Canadian media.

Ezra absolutely got some money to launch The Western Standard years ago, as the government has grants and services as I said before that help media sources get off the ground. Everyone takes advantage of this, because that’s the system we have had in place for decades when it comes media, news and entertainment in Canada. Hell, even when a Canadian music makes a new album, there is government money that helps with the process. It’s all about supporting and promoting Canadian talent.

Rebels, please consider signing the House of Commons petition E-1560 sponsored by Conservative MP Larry Miller.
Whereas:
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has demonstrated the lack of security protocols to prevent the invitation of convicted terrorists to state dinners in other countries.
We, the undersigned, Citizens of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to:
1) Engage in an open investigation and report on all failures in the PMO related to national security and international relations of Canada abroad or other related security matters;
2) Present revised security policies and procedures to address lapses in security and international relations as a result of such; and
3) Complete a thorough investigation of the most recent incident involving India and to clearly delineate the failures of those responsible.

Hyacinth, the disordered personality that trolls this site is a mediocre liberal apologist, who quickly devolves into posting the same phrases, allegations, etc….and the standard name calling. His act is yawn worthy.

Bob, Vinny, you are goof who posted this “Oh the irony, considering Ezra and many Rebel associates received money from the government in the past and some still do.”
Back it up little man!
