MP Hedy “burning crosses” Fry worried “anyone can publish anything” on the web. Free speech crackdown?

Brian LilleyArchive

The Conservatives took a well-deserved shot at Liberal MP Hedy Fry during Question Period on Wednesday.

On Tuesday during a Heritage Committee hearing into the future of local news, Fry wondered who would regulate what is reported in the Internet, “Anyone can publish anything,” she reportedly said.

Of course those with political memories stretching back more than a year or two were quick to point out Fry’s folly on Twitter pointing to her “crosses are burning as we speak” comments. In 2001, Fry famously stood in the House of Commons and exclaimed, "Mr. Speaker, we can just go to British Columbia, in Prince George, where crosses are being burned on lawns as we speak."

The outburst at committee prompted Conservative House Leader and MP for Regina, Andrew Scheer to rise and ask if the government was planning a crack down on free speech.

“Mr. Speaker,” Scheer said, “yesterday the Liberal chair of the heritage committee was awfully concerned that nobody was regulating the content of the Internet. As we speak, there is just a whole lot of Internet going on out there—what with the emails and the Google and the kids twittering. She is worried that “anyone can publish anything”. When Al Gore invented the Internet, he did it in a way that protected free speech.

We know that the Prime Minister has great admiration for dictatorships like China. Is the current government going to take a page from the original red book and start stifling free speech?”

Scheer’s comment about Al Gore inventing the internet was yet another shot at progressive pomposity, mocking Gore for claiming during an interview that he had a hand in inventing the internet. As for the Trudeau comment on China, that is something the Liberal leader actually said during a “ladies night” fundraiser in 2013.

Trudeau’s admiration for the “basic dictatorship” of China was heard and recorded by several media outlets but was only made public thanks to the now defunct Sun News Network being brave enough to point out Trudeau’s ludicrous comments.

In response to Scheer’s question, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly gave a long and rambling reply. In some fairness to Joly, her reply was interrupted several times by Conservative MPs laughing and heckling but I’m still not sure it makes much sense. See for yourself.

Partial Transcript:

Hon. Mélanie Joly (Minister of Canadian Heritage, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, we understand the importance of technological changes and the culture that is in line with these technological changes, and that is why our government is committed to really looking into the opportunity of—

Some hon. members: Oh, oh!

The Speaker: Order, please. Let us settle down, folks. We want to hear the answer to that question. I know members are anxious to hear the answer. The hon. Minister of Canadian Heritage has the floor. We will have order.

Hon. Mélanie Joly: Clearly, Mr. Speaker, there is no issue with free speech in this House. We will launch public consultation on the digital shift in order to really see the opportunity, but not only that, to really understand the impact the internet may have on users and creators in general.

Her comment about Burning Crosses in Prince George As We Speak was several years ago. The sicko was rebuffed after that one and I was hoping that she had died or placed in the nut house. Her resurrection only to spew more racially motivated crap indicates that her electoral majority still remains with the chemically altered, brain dead on East Hasting Street, Vancouver. She hates White people.

And so“crosses are burning as we speak”…Heddy-up-her-Assy Fry is concerned about accuracy……Everything that Ezra suffered at he CHRC was authored by this witch…..so now we are back for more…..we will soon be back at square one……when are you people going to get fed up with “catch and release” approach…..it was the greatest failure of Harper’s “incrementalism” approach that this disgusting chapter in Canada’s history was not thouroughly closed down….

Heritage Canada has a McCarthy style “enemies list” and I am proud to say I am on it…..over what I had to say about the last time they tried to criminalize criticism of feminists….it took five years of effort to get that policy recommendation taken down from Status of Women Canada’s website….EVEN WHEN HARPER WAS IN POWER…..

So now I suppose I could submit an ATIPP request to get access to my SWC/Heritage Canada shit files….maybe even post the results here on theREBEL……..anybody interested?….anybody give a damn?

If not perhaps it is time to shut up and accept the pogrom.

Linda eta al: the first thing you have to do to start seeing this regime in the stark light of reality is to stop using this misnomer of “Liberal” to describe them. THEY ARE NOT LIBERAL ! – frik, I’m a liberal and I think the current LPC is populated with intolerant, authoritarian statists the like of which marched behind Stalin, Castro and Mao into single party state totalism.

These LPC party apparatchiks are authoritarian statists and they seek the power of the single party state – no dissent- no deviation from party line allowed – total control of opinion and public narratives – The LPC and their camp follower “liberal” intelligentsia are the very definition of “political correctness”, which is a term from the early Soviet tyranny The term “politically correct” was associated with the dogmatic application of Stalinist doctrine. Being “Politically Correct” referred to the Communist party line, which provided for “correct” positions on any political matter. Party officers monitored meetings, media and public discourse and these were only allowed to proceed if they towed the party line – official government scrutinized narratives that conformed to party line were said to be “politically correct”. This Stalinist “politically correct” speech code was adopted by Nazi Germany as well.

Among non-politicized citizens the term “politically correct” was used disparagingly, to refer to someone whose loyalty to the single party line overrode any sense of civil justice or human compassion, and led to repressive politics with one citizen spying on another. It was used by political statist Communists against soft or non Communists, and was meant to separate out those who believed in egalitarian morality in governance or diversity of political opinion from dogmatic Communists who would advocate and defend rigid party positions regardless of their moral substance.

We see this Soviet era political correctness daily from this LPC regime – none more stark than carrying out the agenda of unscreened refugees from terrorist nations regardless of public opinion, risk to public safety or national security – tow the party line – destroy those who are concerned as “racist” – the final stage will be to ban speech which is politically incorrect (deviates from party line) and incarcerate those who speak against party line.

Friggin’-A- right Headly and her band of fellow soviets would shut this site down in a heart beat – when the time is right, after demonizing it with propaganda saturation – this was known as a political purge in Communist tyrannies – Our LPC soviets call it “regulating” dissenting opinion so not just “anyone can say anything” any more – only those towing the part narratives will be allowed “free” speech..

Watch for it because when this shoe drops, the government has officially gone to war against its electorate and the charter becomes government property – single party state – single narrative – no deviations – all “rights” are privileges..

@maurice Potvin You are right. JT did not think up these ploys to curtail our freedoms. He is taking direction form the UN. As the first post-national country (JT’s description) we are now an official promoter of the UN’s bid for global governance. Someone suggested that they might try to shut down sites such as the Rebel. My initial response was to think they would not dare. Now I think they might go that far. We have no idea who is making the decisions for this government and the traditional news media seem disinterested.

What’s with this “opportunity” being looked into (according to Joly). Sounds like Liberal double-speak to me.

I can’t help but notice how the police are so quick to respond to any opposition to all these new Marxist rules in Europe and North America and just as likely to look the other way when the socialists/SJW’s break the law

What? Anyone can publish anything on the internet? That is not right. We righteous Liberals have to shut that down, somehow. Ok. Let me think. I will check with our illustrious, thoughtful, enigmatic, charismatic leader (and all the other words ending with ‘ic’ you can imagine) and his deep thinkers to see if we can find a way. There must be a Conservative bill we can overturn that will ban this outrageous activity. Because it’s 2016, and we’re back.

What the younger generations today don’t realize is that not only are they losing their right to freedom of speech but they have even insidiously been deprived of their right to freedom of thought! Freedom to think for themselves! This is all thanks to the blatant biased indoctrination by our educational institutions, unrelenting dishonesty of the mainstream media pushing their own agendas, and incredible peer pressure created by social media and the entertainment industry. It has been like " the Invasion of the Body Snatchers" except that, in this case, it is the minds of our young people that have been snatched!

Yes, I remember all too well Hedy Fry screaming out in the legislature that crosses were burning in Prince George. There were also ALLEGATIONS that she was pretty free and easy with handing out prescription meds. But what does all this matter when young people today don’t seem to care?

We senior citizens did our share to shape the nation in the sixties. It brought about freedom to dress as you like, women’s equality, etc. Canada became rich, fat and now lazy.

Young people I talk with today say they don’t like what’s going on so I ask them, “What are you going to do about it?” I always get the same stock answers; “I don’t know what to do” , “I don’t have the time to join rallies and things” and “It won’t matter what I do ‘cause things aren’t going to change”.

In my position I speak with a lot of younger people. The answers are always the same.

The problem, as I see it, is that they all grew up in a wealthy nation that has been at peace for so long they don’t know shortages or war. Even young veterans of Afghanistan and Bosnia say the same thing.

So, the young of today will have their free speech curtailed by government and they won’t even notice. It’s the younger generation’s nation to save or to lose. Judging by the fact that the Liberal vote was largely younger people I believe the latter.

well I must admit this is a first. I wonder if the CBC Macleans, Huffington post, now there’s a joke, sounds like the who’s who of leftist wing nuts. Even a broken clock is right twice a day and kudos to them for finally reporting news on one their pet projects (anything leftist or Liberal) these so called news agencies are going to be the downfall of this country. There crime is not one of falsehoods but one of omissions

Nathan W: I must disagree with you about Trudeau’s comment on China when you said that none of the other media outlets covered the story because it was a non-story! How about checking out the following?

And there are many more media that covered this story. So, please do not deny the facts! Do your diligent research. You will note that this was covered by CBC, Maclean’s, Huffington Post, Financial Post, and numerous others.

John Morrison: If you scroll down the text of this article you will find this comment: “Scheer’s comment about Al Gore inventing the internet was yet another shot at progressive pomposity, mocking Gore for claiming during an interview that he had a hand in inventing the internet.” It was a mocking statement directed at the Liberals. Mr. Scheer knows perfectly well who invented it.

Glad to see the humor displayed by Mr. Scheer and his “tongue-in-cheek” comment. This young man is great on the floor. Perhaps we shall see more of him during Question period as he gently derides the pomposity of the Liberals.

BTW Sheer. Al Gore did not invent the internet. Sir Tim Berner Lee is accredited with the invention of the World Wide Web. Also the US Department of Defense invented the telecommunications infrastructure and architecture that was widely adopted by and improved upon by Telcos that hosts the WWW. To say Al Gore invented the internet is just another urban myth perpetrated by the Gaia man himself.

It’s not surprising. The liberals own TV and now they want to shut down the last bastion of freedom that conservatives can challenge them. One in which many young people are choosing as their main source of news and entertainment over television.

Liberals have stifled free speech on the subject of official bilingualism for years. Now they want to move on to other topics.

Make no mistake. The Liebranos will do anything, and I mean everything they can get away with to maintain themselves in power with access to taxpayer monies to enrich their friends while they live the life of royalty (which they consider themselves to be) coincidentally!

To quote Samuel Johnson:- “Depend upon it, Sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.”…. The now tippy-toe arguments to control Internet discourse in Canadian blogs will explode and “wonderfully” concentrate all of our discourse in the coming months as the Hedy Fry/Gerald Butts/Boy Blunder Liberals test the waters to control free thought and speech in Canada… It is going to be open warfare eventually, so be prepared for it…

Nathan W thanks for proving our points for us. If you do not like free speech for others then quit exercising it for yourself. you deserve to be subjugated.

Of course she can lie and spout BS , but no one else can have free speech. Typical liberal.

Didn’t anyone every tell them if your honest and innocent of wrong doing you don’t have to worry or care about what anyone says. And if someone is spreading untruths wouldn’t you want to know and defend yourself " if you can and your innocent" I mean won’t it just balance itself??
commented 2016-02-24 23:46:55 -0500
Of course they are, and I don’t believe anyone honestly thinks they won’t. At the very least I suspect this government will end up handing some power back to the CHRC, at the worst they will set up an entire new bureaucracy to oversee internet communications, with the power to block and/or prosecute people under the guise of undefinable “hate speech”.
commented 2016-02-24 23:03:58 -0500
Our Government is beginning to be our worst nightmare.

It was not all that long ago that we had one of the original copy’s of the Magna Cata reposing in Canada, perhaps we should remind our Government of its existence.

Let the banning of free speech be the signal for REVOLUTION.

To hell with these Marxist Scum. They will never drag Canada down to their level.

They are just part of the Global Islamic Caliphate.

“public consultation” …. that is code for the liberals to claim that they talked to some people and an overwhelming number want limits to what can and cannot be put on the web. Here come the leftist progressive fucktards.
Speaking of,…. Nathan….stick to what you know,…….nothing!!

I really hate our system of government. Sheer asked an important question of the Liberals but we never got an answer because of all the STUPID heckling and laughter from BOTH sides of the house. In the end free speech – the MOST important subject for any country – was treated as one big joke by EVERY member of parliament.

The statement by Jolly was vague and left the impression that the Liberals would in fact “study” putting limits on online speech and yet there was no follow-up? Is that how our system works?

Of course the “conservative’s” are hardly defenders of speech themselves. Harper brought in “hate speech” laws that further criminalized speech in Canada. The “conservatives” proposed laws that would shut-down websites with unpopular opinions (e.g. websites critical of Islam).

As a practical matter we don’t have free speech in Canada. For instance , a Toronto man – Greg Alan Elliott – was arrested and charged for disagreeing with radical feminists online. One of the feminists ran to police saying she feared for his life because Elliott was “following her tweets and hashtags”. Elliott was put through three years of hell until he was finally acquitted last month. Although a free man he was destroyed financially and defamed by every major media outlet in the country – all because we DON"T have free speech in Canada. That’s a myth. The State can come after you for anything!

As a practical matter we do not have free speech in Canada. In theory if you write something critical of Islam you could be charged with inciting hatred against an identifiable group.

I hope if we ever get a REAL conservative party back in power that the first thing they do is to scrap “hate speech” laws and make free speech a right for every Canadian just as it is for Americans. If this does not happen Canada would be better off becoming the 51st State (especially under a President Trump!)
