MP Hedy “burning crosses” Fry worried “anyone can publish anything” on the web. Free speech crackdown?

The Conservatives took a well-deserved shot at Liberal MP Hedy Fry during Question Period on Wednesday.

On Tuesday during a Heritage Committee hearing into the future of local news, Fry wondered who would regulate what is reported in the Internet, “Anyone can publish anything,” she reportedly said.

Of course those with political memories stretching back more than a year or two were quick to point out Fry’s folly on Twitter pointing to her “crosses are burning as we speak” comments. In 2001, Fry famously stood in the House of Commons and exclaimed, "Mr. Speaker, we can just go to British Columbia, in Prince George, where crosses are being burned on lawns as we speak."

The outburst at committee prompted Conservative House Leader and MP for Regina, Andrew Scheer to rise and ask if the government was planning a crack down on free speech.

“Mr. Speaker,” Scheer said, “yesterday the Liberal chair of the heritage committee was awfully concerned that nobody was regulating the content of the Internet. As we speak, there is just a whole lot of Internet going on out there—what with the emails and the Google and the kids twittering. She is worried that “anyone can publish anything”. When Al Gore invented the Internet, he did it in a way that protected free speech.

We know that the Prime Minister has great admiration for dictatorships like China. Is the current government going to take a page from the original red book and start stifling free speech?”

Scheer’s comment about Al Gore inventing the internet was yet another shot at progressive pomposity, mocking Gore for claiming during an interview that he had a hand in inventing the internet. As for the Trudeau comment on China, that is something the Liberal leader actually said during a “ladies night” fundraiser in 2013.

Trudeau’s admiration for the “basic dictatorship” of China was heard and recorded by several media outlets but was only made public thanks to the now defunct Sun News Network being brave enough to point out Trudeau’s ludicrous comments.

In response to Scheer’s question, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly gave a long and rambling reply. In some fairness to Joly, her reply was interrupted several times by Conservative MPs laughing and heckling but I’m still not sure it makes much sense. See for yourself.

Partial Transcript:

Hon. Mélanie Joly (Minister of Canadian Heritage, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, we understand the importance of technological changes and the culture that is in line with these technological changes, and that is why our government is committed to really looking into the opportunity of—

Some hon. members: Oh, oh!

The Speaker: Order, please. Let us settle down, folks. We want to hear the answer to that question. I know members are anxious to hear the answer. The hon. Minister of Canadian Heritage has the floor. We will have order.

Hon. Mélanie Joly: Clearly, Mr. Speaker, there is no issue with free speech in this House. We will launch public consultation on the digital shift in order to really see the opportunity, but not only that, to really understand the impact the internet may have on users and creators in general.

Traditional media is newspapers, books, magazines, radio, movies and television now the internet is a new media. News websites like TheRebel.media which Trudeau lefty liberals and provincial NDP governments don’t like thus the attempt to control and ban certain websites by lefty governments.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, the Liberals are doing policy-wise is designed to override our rights and freedoms guaranteed under the Charter and to replace our democracy with a Marxist style dictatorship. It’s actually quite ingenious they way they’re doing it, so their methodology couldn’t possibly have been designed by JT… he’s dumber than a sack of rocks. But lets look at the policies they’re moving forward on: the importation of thousands upon thousands of non-vetted Muslim immigrants, all of whom they expect to be Liberal voters; stacking the SCOC with leftist judges (not yet… but just wait); setting the UN “Climate Change” initiative as their top priority; promising further restrictions on gun ownership; cooling relationships with Israel and backing away from our fight against Radical Islam; a stated goal of reestablishing diplomatic relations with Iran; cozying up to the big Marxist traded unions and First Nation’s Leaders (but not their people); turning a blind eye to radical Imams in radical mosques; ramping up the power of federal bureaucrats and human rights tribunals; redefining hate speech to include criticizing anyone with leftist or hedonistic views….. this incudes anyone espousing religious convictions that don’t affirm the LGTB community, hedonism or same-sex marriage….. unless, of course it’s a Muslim doing it; expunging the freedom of the press (for conservatives at least) and rewarding MSM for embracing the Liberal talking points; indoctrinating our youth with atheistic, Marxist-Leninist propaganda; and pacifying the populace with legalized marijuana and safe injection sights. Trudeau does not believe in democracy, he believes in a centralized, socialist government, which will ultimately morph into a one World Government. That’s his philosophy, but of course, the design is Gerald Butts’, as he’s not smart enough to come up with the plan himself. It’s ingenious because it’s gradual. With the populous pacified, it will happen like a frog in warm water that’s gradually taken up to a boil. No one will know it’s happening until it’s too late…… much like Hitler did in Germany. Unless he’s stopped first. I don’t want to silence them, but I’ll be damned if I let them silence me.

“Anyone can publish anything,” she reportedly said. – Ergo they are planning to crack down on free speech.

OK guys. But seriously. People are separating off into their echo chambers and spreading all sorts of lies and dishonest innueundo. That is not good for democracy. It will lead to polarization and a deterioration of good relations between Canadians.

And Wow, Andrew Sheer is one dishonest SOB. How offensive is that to China that Trudeau saying he has “some level of respect for China” was used as an attack against Trudeau. China will not forget this. If Conservatives every form government again, Canada will be at the very bottom of the list of all countries in the world for the fact of Conservative stupidities during the election.

“As for the Trudeau comment on China, that is something the Liberal leader actually said "

It would help if you pointed out that this is a misquote of a misquote. That’s not at all what he said. Other outlets did not report it because it was a non-story, and only careful doctoring of the quote made it come across as troublesome.

Well, if Internet access in Canada is to be filter like it is in places like China, then it would definitely be the Liberal government that would do it. If that happens, then a VPN to a country where the Internet is still open would be the only choice.

I need a safe space as I feel threatened by Ms. Fry. I think it is a micro aggression.

They want to study the impact of the internet on Canada. I am sure many sociologists have already studied that item to death.

I was, and probably still am, opposed to the Fremen of the Land movement. But, know what, I’m beginning to see their point about ignoring government.

Isn’t Fry institutionalized yet? Don’t we have the funding to keep loons like this in a safe place where they won’t harm themselves other other people?

The fact that internet has provided a platform to “break through the obfuscatory msm” is exactly why that same media cartel, through the federal crtc censorship bureau, is going to go on a full court press to ‘regulate’ (read; censor) the internet, in general. We are already seeing the opening salvo of that agenda with the blatant censorship now occurring on facebook and twitter to defame and silence any who dare to speak against the approved leftist hate mongers.
I predict that wihin this year you will see sites like The Rebel, Brietbart and too many more to mention, that have effectively blown apart the msm control of the leftist totalitarian narrative, will come under direct attack to either blatantly shut them down or regulate them out of existence.

Ban free speech?

Why not?

Twitter did.

Libs are the same.

It is coming.
