29-year-old Moazzam Tariq of Brampton, Ontario has fled to Pakistan after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman.
According to The Star, the victim's name is subject to a publication ban. She and Tariq first met at a downtown Toronto club where he encouraged her to drink vodka. When they left the club, she could barely stand. Surveillance video from that night shows them in an elevator going up to a room at the Thompson Hotel.
Tariq had been released on a $10,000 bail following his arrest in July 2015. After his conviction in October, he remained on bail and surrendered his Pakistani passport.
However, as The Star reports, Tariq used a different passport to travel to Pakistan on Nov. 18. His disappearance was first reported last week when he failed to show up at the sentencing hearing.
Crown prosecutor Jill Witkin told the court Tariq’s father and surety said he had last spoken to Tariq on Nov. 24. Tariq told him he was in Vancouver for business but would return for the December 1 court date.
Ontario Court Justice Mara Greene found that Tariq had absconded to avoid being sentenced. She ordered that the sentencing hearing proceed without him and noted that in no legal reason to have revoked Tariq’s bail following his conviction.
