Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has decided to cancel its initial screening of American Sniper after the school's Muslim Students Association complained.
In a message posted on Facebook by the Union Programs and Activities Committee Cinema (UPAC), the decision is explained.
“This past Wednesday, UPAC Cinema decided to postpone the screening of the controversial film, American Sniper. This decision was made after careful consideration of a request by RPI Muslim Students Association to cancel the film. We realized that this movie has caused heightened tension across communities and college campuses nationwide, including violent actions and even murders. We decided that instead of showing the movie as a regular Friday Night Movie, it should be coupled with an educational forum. We then took action and replaced American Sniper with The Theory of Everything,” it reads.
As The Daily Caller points out, the same school will be showing a slasher movie called 'Unfriended' and has shown Django Unchained – an equally violent – if not more so – film.
David Brond, the Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Relations, sent out an email about the decision. The email has made its way onto Reddit.
“...UPAC has decided that they will show American Sniper during this spring semester, at a date to be announced. The showing will be coupled with an optional educational forum for all members of the Rensselaer campus community to participate in an intellectual discourse about the film and current world events,” it reads.
Is the film really so controversial that an education 'forum' has to be held to talk about it? Is the movie that 'triggering'?
The postponement of American Sniper at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute comes just after the University of Michigan created a national story when they gave into pressure by Muslim students to cancel their screening of the film.
The decision was reversed shortly after the school's football coach tweeted that the football team would be watching the film.
Do you think it's time for schools to stop giving into demands made by Muslim students?
