Today’s Meet Your Destroyer candidate is John Archer, the Notley NDP candidate in the riding of Edmonton-South West.
Archer spent two decades as a CBC journalist before moving into the Premier's office, then into the Ministry of Transport in a communications role.
It was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in politics, and I've spent nearly four years covering the NDP in Alberta so that says a lot!
And this week, Archer topped himself, when he tweeted a hand drawn image urging people to, among other things, “vote as if your skin is not white.”
I'll show you the now deleted image, Archer’s half hearted apology, and share what his African-Canadian UCP competitor in the riding had to say about Archer thinking skin colour is a factor at the ballot box.
This old cisgendered white man of privilege and power thinks that he owns the votes of people of colour in the riding, simply by virtue of party affiliation.
Archer is treating people of colour as a monolithic voting bloc whose votes he feels entitled to, as opposed to viewing these Albertans as distinct free-thinking individuals with autonomy and personal political issues that matter to them.
John thinks the NDP owns them. That's actual bigotry. I think Archer needs to check his white privilege!
But there's not a peep about this in the mainstream media because if it's not a Tory, it’s not a story.
