Jagmeet Singh wants government to fix “fake news” — and he's not alone

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

Today, the CBC reports

NDP asks elections watchdog to investigate 'slanderous' ads targeting Singh

My first thought when seeing that was: as a publisher, I know a bit about slander. There are a lot of defences — truth, obviously; but also fair comment. And if the slanderer was malicious or not; and of course it matters if there were any actual damages.

So my first thought was: How on earth could an “elections watchdog” handle a technical legal matter like a defamation lawsuit? And what does that have to do with running an election?

Technically, defamation means anything that would lower your reputation in the eyes of the public — which is about 85 per cent of all political messaging. And we generally don’t sue each other for that.

You could say that any election campaign is a massive, 35-day trial, where every single voter is on the jury.

But it gets weirder. What exactly was the defamation here?

Ads claim NDP leader owns a multi-million dollar mansion

How is that defamatory? Singh is running in a by-election in Burnaby, which is a suburb of Vancouver. It’s part of the Greater Vancouver area. The average price for detached houses there is $1.6 million

Jagmeet Singh cultivates an image of wealth and luxury. He does glamour-style photo shoots, featuring his handsome self, around Canada and around the world, wearing bespoke luxury suits. He’s a helluva socialist this guy...

As the Tyee first reported, an ad claiming Singh owns a $5.5 million mansion ran below a story in the Vancouver Courier, a community paper. That link took readers to an article titled "13 Super Luxurious Celebrity Houses – They Surely Know How to Spend Their Fortune" on the website Attorney Cocktail.

Oh. Now we’re getting somewhere.

This isn’t a political ad. It’s just some clickbait, so people could look at a pretty house.

Late last year another story — which has been shared more than 5,700 times on Facebook — accused Singh of having links to Sikh militants.

Yeah, that’s not actually fake news. He does have links to Sikh militants

And by the way, so is Justin Trudeau:

Trudeau literally brought a convicted Sikh terrorist named Jaspal Atwal with him on his scandalous trip to India last year.

The NDP sent CBC News screen capture images that show the ad that appeared in the Courier also appeared on the History Channel website and the U.K.-based site for the Independent newspaper. Clicking on the link brings the reader to a photo gallery of more than 145 celebrities with mansions, including Alex Rodriguez, the Obamas and Rihanna.

It’s like you’re complaining about the National Enquirer saying that Bill Clinton lives on Mars, or the Hillary Clinton is really Elvis Presley. Those are entertainments. You don’t sue them, unless you have more money than brains.

Now this is obviously a really dumb story.

But that’s the point:

They’re using a really dumb complaint to ask for a really powerful remedy — government regulation of the Internet.

In fact, Trudeau’s Liberal candidate in Burnaby, at a candidates' debate for the by-election there (where Jagmeet Singh is running too) called for the United Nations to regulate the Internet.

At he actually got booed, even at a left-wing event, in a liberal city.

But so what? The fancy people want to regulate the Internet, and they will...

Many of you are talking about Kenny vs. Fildebrandt and Scheer vs. Bernier………….. Peter, in my opinion, it makes no difference who people vote for, the next election has already been decided and Trudeau is going to win. He will become what is probably the last Prime Minister of Canada and he will be the first Puppet who has open relationship with the NWO Marxist. The NWO are becoming a little nervous, they know that people are becoming aware of what really is happening and they need to grab the North American Continent before it is to late. Keep an eye on the actions of the Democrats in the USA. Canada’s war is with big money despots pulling the strings of clowns……..Something Drastic needs to happen, if we are to survive

Many of you are talking about Kenny vs. Fildebrandt and Scheer vs. Bernier.

Fildebrandt (FCPA) and Bernier (PPC) are obviously the best Conservatives we have here in Canada that are currently nearing an election.

Of that there is no doubt, but both have created new parties. A new party has little chance of even becoming the official opposition party, which means that in the case of federal politics the incumbent will win.

In the case of Alberta, Notley is hated so much that Kenny will probably take office. Maybe the FCPA will be the official opposition. That would be an okay situation.

But Alberta is not really the concern, is it? Ottawa is.

I am more worried about the federal election. As much as many of you hate to hear it, split vote is a real thing. You can’t wish it away.

I like Maxime’s politics. I really do. But the truth of the matter is that he will not even become the official opposition (not this time, not yet) and will just take away from the seats the CPC could win.

Sure, I get it, spineless Scheer is just a Liberal Lite, but is it not better to have spineless Scheer in office than Trudeau? No, really, think about it! Trudeau in for another four years. That is a horrible outcome!

Am I the only one?? From the comments of regular posters to The Rebel, it seems that a “switch” has been thrown in the last few days to spread distrust and “misrepresentation” and character “slings” among them….

Karen, how many PhDs do you have?
Trump won because he called out fake news, held them up to be seen for what they are, fake, like you and your PhDs.

I have always known that but it was such a slap in the ear not just see it as a few warped policies but an actual moulded outcome in Trudeau’s first term is sobering.. this country’s fabric is unravelling at an alarming pace.

Charred, welcome to the world of knowing too much. The numbers are growing. This is why fake news and choreographed narratives are so important to them. They must have their outcomes. They will have their outcomes. These people are playing for keeps.

Liza said.. the left have outcomes they have to guarantee.
Now I’m thinking.. in a world where nothing is guaranteed outcomes are always well generally unpredictable… But it almost seems with the absolute aggression the Liberals are using to push unpopular laws and agendas through in this practically politically defenceless country could make that one of the most terrifying thoughts ever.. this is probably the most clicks in the ratchet in a civilized country ever and to think they could double up on the clicks at will in Canada. Simply terrifying.!

Nancy Pelosie explains step by step how unscrupulous politicians create fake news. Its called the “Wrap up smear”.

People are getting wise to this tactic and as they do, the more the politicians talk about the ‘fake news’ crackdown. They are scared and losing control. Things are about to become a whole lot more totalitarian in this country, because the left have outcomes they have to guarantee. Put on your armour.

Liza said.. Everyone knows that you cannot trust a politician who advocates for government regulation of the information that gets out or doesn’t get out to the people.
There are literally hundreds of Marxists and you can find them all basically saying the same thing.. once you own the media everything else is just a mop up job .!

Any politician who thinks that the government should regulate the media is playing some form of identity politics or other. Singh has to play the fake news card, he can’t compete on his abilities. He showed that clearly in the debate. He has to use all his identity cards, and he has a few. Problem is, that people are getting wise to it and tired of empty headed politicians, no matter how young, well dressed, preferred colour or religion. Everyone knows that you cannot trust a politician who advocates for government regulation of the information that gets out or doesn’t get out to the people.

I don’t care about his ethnicity or his religion either… What I do care about is the extension of his “brown privilege“ and how it affects me.!! And when people from other places wish to make my country resemble their homeland I am disinclined to acquiesce that along with strong negative feelings to go the opposite direction.
commented 2019-02-10 16:47:33 -0500
I honestly couldn’t care less about Mr. Singh’s ethnicity/religion or any of the physical accoutrements that go along with that. And I can even put aside my dislike of socialism long enough to listen to what he has to say.
And whether he lives in a 5 million dollar mansion or a 1950s two-bedroom bungalow is neither here nor there with me.
But when the chosen leader of an important Canadian federal political party repeatedly becomes confused when confronted by reporters with simple questions about his party’s policies?
That’s, as the kids like to say, ‘problematic,’ and I suspect that a few currently serving NDP members of Parliament feel the same way.

The globalists require 1 more world conflict……………….

Charred Remains, I agree with You but I think the next time around there will be another agenda added, they will concentrate on the extermination of the white race. these Marxist do not like workers who are capable of logical thought and demand high wages, They want only brain dead simpletons who don’t ask questions. The white mega rich will not be affected, fools that they are………For a while.

The globalists require 1 more world conflict to fully implement their agenda… But it won’t be done like the first or second world war. This time around will be an endless series of civil war around first world nations to D evolve them to where they can be controlled by a master or a warlord.. once that point is reached they will drag the conflict out until the people are so sick of it they will sell their freedoms, their liberties and their souls for an artificial end to the conflict. But.. they are risking a lot as well because the conflicts that they are engineering may not go in their favour and they will have to invoke extreme measures to get control back.. bio’s, Chems, psychological, and covert operations where the end justifies any means at all.!!
