Netflix resurrects the worst of CanCon

David MenziesMission Specialist

Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly announced that Netflix will commit half a billion dollars to producing Canadian content over the next five years, but what sort of Can-Con will Netflix produce?

A couple of  months ago it was announced that a new version of the disturbing '80s game show, Just Like Mom, is in the works. You may remember it as the show hosted by Fergie Oliver, a man who never met a 12-year-old girl that he didn't want to kiss...

Because it's too difficult to launch original content, I've got a few suggestions for more "uber-schlocky" shows that Netflix Canada can bring back...

CBC drivel was always drivel. Written by someone who received CBC as the only station in the North. But in those days they did take the legislated mandate seriously and broadcast real entertainment from The States like WKRP, Barney Miller, Mary Tyler Moore, Archie Bunker, Happy Days; or from the UK, Duchess of Duke Street, Forsythe Saga, Elizabeth. Because, then, like now, CBC was incapable of quality, but then they realized that fact. We had to suffer the hour of drivel, but knew we would be rewarded with something worthwhile the rest of the eve.ning.

…If Jolie thinks a post-modernist, collectivist lgbt sitcom and a revamped ‘Little Mosque on The Prairie’ is representative of our country and it’s people she should get out of her elite group in town a bit more often.

Paid to produce Canadian content, instead of being another vehicle for any good Canadian content that exists to be taken to the public. Paying to be seen, just makes it another vehicle for government propaganda, instead of a showcase for quality. I have occasionally perused Netflix through a relatives subscription and it is mostly garbage, lots of b grade hollywood movies and bad tv. A few worthwhile movies and doc’s amongst a lot of trash. They are prostituting themselves allowing a government to pay to play.
This Heritage Minister is nothing but a brown shirt in a skirt. I can’t wait to see what gets spat up as Canadian content.

Flat Earth,

What the hell are you talking about? There is ENDLESS choice.

What ever happened to choice. This is just another effort to control content to with the viewer has access to. if we are subjected to Canadian content you can rest assured all white men will be a portrayed as bigots and racists who only know how to steal land.

Oh boy ,here comes a transgender-fluid Duddly Do-Right saving the country from hate speech and Boris Karloff-like white privileged supremacy. Nail biting stuff like most Canadian content. There is always the holiday yule log channel, thank goodness.

David,

I think Netflix have proven themselves when it comes to original and retro content. This is actually a great thing for Canada and will help make us more competitive with other media.

Sadly, they wouldn’t pay for anything to do with The Rebel and I assume that kind of pisses people off here.
