New Canadian $10 bill is all about tokenism

Faith GoldyArchive

A woman no one has ever heard of is going to be on Canada’s ten dollar bill because apparently Her Royal Majesty doesn’t count as a woman. Plus, it is “the current year”…

The Trudeau government has chosen Viola Desmond to be featured on the note. Her illustrious accomplishments can be boiled down to about a single sentence:

In 1946, Desmond defied a Nova Scotian movie theatre’s segregation policy by refusing to sit in the balcony designated exclusively for blacks.

Instead, she sat in the whites-only section on the main floor, before being arrested and charged.

(The selection of Desmond might strike the astute viewer as ironic, since it wasn’t so long ago that Canada’s self-styled feminist Prime Minister spoke at a segregated Muslim mosque where the balcony was designated exclusively for women, who are barred from the men-only main floor...)

Now, the Canadian government would have you believe their pick was Canada’s Rosa Parks, but WATCH my report for the whole story…

Aawesome Faith thanks for saying this.
When i seen this on the news the other day i thought WTF
Surely there is a more deserving CANADIAN that can be on the 10$ bill

Everyone learns about this person in grade 12 history. Canadian history. Like really? How anti Canadian is Ezra and rebel?

More smoke and mirrors from the Liebranos. None of this will actually improve anything where women are concerned. It is simply a cynical ploy to influence women to continue gushing over the Muslim PM in Ottawa. Regrettably, many, of both sexes, will fall for it!

Are you not missing the point of the choice here Faith? I can understand a Conservative opposition to whatever Liberals may be doing but to oppose an attempt to right a wrong however ancient the offence may have been, how can that be wrong? The reason she is a woman no one has heard of is because the real reason for her arrest and public shaming has been kept a deep dark Canadian secret all these years! Can you comprehend that? Her arrest, abuse and humiliation at the hands of the law and the system will never affect you or yours on this continent. Never. So, I suppose I can in part understand your indifference and insensitivity to the treatment of minorities, but can you understand that the Afro-Canadian community will be encouraged to finally put this one affront at the hands of a racist system to rest perhaps? It may be an egregious affront to remove Her Majesty and replace her with a woman of colour to you and many of your readers, but to the growing community of minorities especially those of African descent it is a step in the right direction. I say Bravo to the Liberal choice (for once), and Boo to to your dissent!

How about a pile of aborted girl babies who gave their lives that feminists can virtue signal their new found “powers”?

Jan G,

Last year, in early October (about the time of our election) the U.S. treasury announced a change to the faces on their currency, which would include women. The treasury made a call to the American people for a decision on who would appear on the bills, the results have been known for a while.
Martin Luther King Jr was another choice for a bill at the same time.
Their rollout is a little longer, 2020.

Trudeau doesn’t have an original thought in his head, never has, never will.

Gary said, “Her Royal Majesty is not a Canadian citizen”
No Gary, she is the embodiment of the country, you are a Canadian citizen because of her. When I became a civil servant, I had to swear an oath to her, as does every MP, MPP, MLA, member of the armed forces, etc, etc.

So since we have had a Canadian Woman (because she our Queen) on our bills (and coins) since 1952 this recent development is just so much foolishness.

Ifn ahh din know betta ah be tinkin that Viola be white. Anyway sticking her mug on a $10 bill cain’t be no worse than tossin a Nobel Peace prize to a mulatto jist cause he gotts a silver tongue .

Terribly disappointed that they didn’t put Shaggy Maggie Turdo on the bill. Does no-one remember her brave display in NYC when she put Canada’s ailing fur trade in the spot light?

I knew from the start that this whole thing was just pandering to a minority group, and in doing so Trudeau furthers his campaign to eliminate the monarchy from our history. He started with that when he took office and had the Queen’s picture removed from a location at parliament hill and replaced with a token of the aboriginal community. Those in the black community should feel insulted, if this is the best representation of black history in Canada, a one time occurrence, it should become painfully obvious what this is all about. Whether you’re white, black whatever, it smells of tokenism, which in my opinion is a form of racism in itself. If I am going to have someone displayed as a significant figure marking a historical contribution in my individual community, I would want someone who truly measures up to the level of contributions made by other people from other communities. If this is indeed the best that the black community has, that’s Sad to say the least and it continues the trend where the black community is kept down as their accomplishments don’t compare to others. The black community needs to protest and stop it, or they are complicit in the efforts to keep the black communities accomplishments at a lower bar.

I think Ontarios Preimier rug muncher would be a better choice ,she has done more than just get kicked out of a movie theatre
She has pissed away billions its amazing what she has done
I know she is a little butch but she is close to a women and she could be on our money wearing her strap on ,or munching carpets or playing with her double ended toy .
It’s 2016 after all

Liberals cater to special interest groups while ignoring the vast majority of Canadians. There are other women who made more impressive contributions to the country as a whole.

Trudeau pinched the idea from the U.S. treasury department, then, upstaged them…he couldn’t come up with something like that on his own.

Totally disingenuous, it smacks of campaigning more than the bestowing of an honor.

I think I will stick with $20’s and $5’s. Or debit.

I will not accept a $10 bill out of spite. I’m done with the PC madness.

Yeah, William Lyon Mackenzie King, our wonderful Prime Minister who held seances and rejected a boatload of German Jewish refugees in 1939, in its last hope as it was already rejected by the rest of the Americas. Among his (in)famous quotes “[Hitler] is really one who truly loves his fellow man”. He may have entered Canada into WW2 relatively early, but he was a fellow appeaser in the west up until that point.

" … although I think he is more than a pompous ass – I think he is a pompous asshole. "

I second that Marty.

It is time to break free of the bonds of colonialism and stop being a banana republic who allows our resources to be shipped out of our country to be processed. Maybe instead of criticizing what you don’t know it’s time to learn a little more about Canadian history and people who made a difference to the way Canada has developed.”

Who claimed the Queen was a Canadian citizen???
I am sorry you are so stupid Gary Blidook, head back to your safe space over at the CBC.

I had a bet that the liberals’ choice, was again, going to be a black woman. It makes them feel so superior to flatter the (perceived) weak. The next will be a woman with a burka, then a First Nation millionaire, then an openly gay ex. politician, then ….then maybe The potato himself.

Political correctness has run truly amuck there as the Finance Ministry has chosen to remove the picture of its first Prime Minister,
Sir John McDonald, from its $10 bill and replace him with the picture of Ms. Viola Desmond. We shall openly acknowledge that Ms. Desmond was indeed a civil rights heroine and the children of Canada should know of her and of her courage in resisting racial prejudice there in Canada in the 40’s and 50’s but is she really more important to Canadian history than was… and is… Sir
McDonald who helped to unify Canada’s provinces as he supported the British North America Act uniting what had been previously known as Canada West and Canada East? Sir John dominated Canadian politics for decades in the 19th century and set the country on its course of pre-eminence in the world. “Demoting” him seems to us to be an error of very real judgement that is truly political
correctness run wholly amuck. Gartman letter from the US

If he were to implement actual policies to help women he may offend one of his biggest supporters. I just wanna know what this pipe dream will cost us now.

Folks, we haven’t hit rock bottom yet. Give Justin and his merry band of Bolshies time.

Stand by next year for the Omar Khadr $20.00 bill, followed by the new “transgender” $100.00 bill (it self-identifies as whatever you want it to be this week)…

He’s become a laughing stock to Canada, showing up on US news and not in a good light. He’s pandering for his self gratification A hypocrite, but that I guess that’s the qualification for a liberal. Just plain sickening

When I saw Faith use the word tokenism I have to confess my mind wandered to tokingism in which case perhaps Cheech and Chong on the bill would be a more suited replacement than the Willy Wonka lookalike who now graces our Dominion’s 10 dollar banknote.

Admittedly a Trans-Person does need to be recognized for their accomplishments. It’s 2016!
They will be representative of everyone who has muddled through their own sexuality
-and then botched it.
We need to start a petition for the Bank of Canada to release a $3 bill, and then… let the vetting begin.

With all the feminist invasion on our currency, what will they do for symbolism when they have 100% pictoral representation , make it salmon scented?
