13 Canadians have been taken hostage by China — but Trudeau doesn’t care enough to call their president.

Why doesn’t Justin Trudeau care that China has taken 13 Canadians hostage in the past few weeks?

Global Affairs Canada spokesman Guillaume Bérubé said in a statement to The Globe and Mail that the government is aware that 13 Canadians have been detained in China, excluding Hong Kong, since Dec. 1, 2018. Previously, only Michael Kovrig, Michael Spavor and Sarah McIver were publicly known to have been detained in China since Canada arrested Ms. Meng, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. They were taken into custody after China promised retaliation for Ms. Meng’s arrest.

They’re talking about Meng Wanzhou. She's the Chief Financial Officer for Huawei, the huge Chinese cell phone company.

According to the United States, which asked Canadian police to arrest Meng when she touched down in Canada, she deceived international banks into clearing transactions with Iran by claiming two companies were independent of Huawei, when Huawei controlled them. So it’s a banking thing, a securities thing, a fraud thing. I’ll be candid — I’m sure it’s politically motivated by the U.S. but if it’s against the law, it’s against the law.

But in China everything is linked to everything, and thus the 13 retaliatory arrests of Canadians. Most of them were let go after they were just harassed — to send a message to Trudeau. But a number of them remain in detention, including a former Canadian diplomat.

Of course China didn’t seize an American. Trump has been extremely forceful in repatriating Americans from around the world who were seized by foreign regimes. But they know they can walk all over Canada with impunity.

It took Chrystia Freeland eleven days to issue a little tweet objecting to the first Canadians being taken hostage. What took so long? Where is our self-respect?

(By contrast, Freeland, and Trudeau himself, tweeted ten times about Jamal Khashoggi, a Muslim brotherhood spin doctor, paid by Qatar, to undermine Saudi Arabia...)

And over the Christmas break, what did Trudeau do? Did he maybe take a private flight to Beijing, to talk face-to-face with President Xi? Did he even make a phone call? Nope. He was partying it up in Whistler, snowboarding and surely enjoying Whistler’s famous marijuana scene.

And he still won’t call the Chinese. What is wrong with him?

Hey, what do you think Donald Trump would do if 13 Americans were seized by China? I hate to think of what he’d do. And so does President Xi, which is why he hasn’t said a peep about it to Trump.

Speaking of Trump...

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his government’s statements in support of two Canadians detained in China, Trudeau’s office said in a statement.

It’s nice to ask America for help, I guess.

Will Trump help? Maybe. I bet he will.

But Trump has Americans to care about. What’s in it for America?

Look, I want those Canadians back home — and the other 200 Canadians held in China

Some of them are real criminals. They’re not all political pawns. But these 13 seizures are political.

And Trudeau is a child who has no clue. Or, rather, he knows what to do but can’t or won’t.

This is Trudeau’s place in the world — an errand boy for dictators, and a punching bag for them, too.

What a shame that Canadian citizens have to pay the price.

And what irony that even Trudeau knows that only Trump can fix it...

NEXT: Last night, President Trump delivered a major address from the Oval Office, about border security, crime, and the Democrats stubborn refusal to comprise.

Joel Pollak of Breitbart joins me to talk about Trump's speech, the reaction to it, and what happens next.
