Maclean’s isn’t really a thing anymore — they used to be published weekly, now they barely publish once a month, most of its staff has been let go, and Rogers has put it up for sale.
But recently they put out an issue with a front cover that got lots of attention.
It pictured Andrew Scheer, the federal Conservative Party leader; Jason Kenney, the Alberta opposition leader who will probably be premier next year; and premiers Doug Ford of Ontario, Brian Pallister of Manitoba and Scott Moe of Saskatchewan. They’re against the carbon tax.
And in big letters: "The Resistance."
A lot of people mocked that Maclean's cover, and that pose. It became a meme.
And one of those memes was made by a big union called Unifor.
It shows Jerry Dias, the president of Unifor in the middle. And you can see the caption:
Welcome to Andrew Scheer’s worst nightmare.
Not a lot of doubt about whose side this union is on. They will surely register as a third-party campaign group in the upcoming election — to re-elect Trudeau. (You’ll recall that Jerry Dias was part of Trudeau’s disastrous advisory committee on the NAFTA deal.)
Unifor represents thousands of Canadian journalists.
Tonight I'll list all the newspapers and TV news stations that are unionized by Unifor. It's basically... everybody.
So essentially, the reporters at the Globe and Mail and CTV and the Toronto Star are going to war with some of the people they claim they’re reporting on neutrally (the Conservatives) and they’re going to war on behalf of some of the people they claim they’re reporting on neutrally (the Liberals).
Can you show me a journalist anywhere in Canada who is actually doing anything about this Unifor meme? Moving a motion to vote against this? Even starting a new, politically non-partisan union of political journalists?
No, don’t be silly.
You always suspected you couldn’t trust the mainstream media.
Now you have proof...
