The NDP just announced a new law, Bill 32 designed to limit the effect of third-party advertisers. But it's really being used to limit press freedom.
You see, someone has filed a complaint with Elections Alberta against The Rebel. Back in September, The Rebel received a letter from Elections Alberta saying they have been informed that The Rebel may be breaking the law because we have not registered as third-party advertisers in Alberta.
The Rebel is not a political action committee (PAC) or a third-party advertiser who exists to support a party or a candidate. We are conservative opinion journalists exercising our charter rights.
Our lawyer is fighting back. He’s fired off a letter to Elections Alberta reminding them of their own rules about news and commentary. In the same official complaint letter to us, the first exclusion to the law about third-party advertisers is "the transmission to the public of an editorial, a debate, a speech, an interview, a column, a letter, a commentary or news".
So far, we have a cursory response from the government that they have received our letter, but no assurance that Elections Alberta will back off.
But now the NDP has introduced a bill they plan to ram through the legislature. It’s called Bill 32, with the Orwellian official name of "An Act to Strengthen and Protect Democracy in Alberta." The Bill would allow for the NDP to limit the amount of money and the sorts of things PACs can spend money on.
What the NDP is trying to do to us is a preemptive strike - to get a handle on The Rebel before they have to face the next election campaign in 2019.
Imagine if the NDP limited our donations and imposed a spending cap on us? Would we have to lay off staff and limit the kinds and volume of coverage we can give to important issues? Maybe.
And that’s exactly what the NDP wants. They don’t want us around giving them the scrutiny the mainstream media won't. This is just Notley's latest attempt to silence us — following in the ugly footsteps of their armed sheriff, and their bizarre letter from Alberta Justice saying that we weren't journalists.
So, I'm putting Notley on notice. If she wants a fight over the free press again. She's got it. And she is going to lose this one too. We won't stand by and let her stack the elections laws against her critics.
But I need your help. Please sign the petition below and help us fight back against Rachel Notley and her NDP destroyers.

Kevin Lee, Rachel Notley's Elections Alberta bureaucrat, must back off and respect the constitutional freedom of the press for The Rebel.
