Some days it seems like all we get is bad news in Alberta. More debt, new taxes, high unemployment, the government suing itself. Everyday it’s something. But today, I am pleased to bring you a glimmer of hope.
Rachel Notley’s disapproval rating is at 37%. That’s good news. Dislike Rachel Notley? Congratulations, my friend. You are a normal, red blooded, clear headed Albertan.
But there is more to this story. Rachel Notley is on the same trajectory as disgraced former premier Alison Redford.
When Alison Redford took power, she had a 55% approval rating. Rachel Notley, in June 2015, had a 53% approval. Close enough. Alison Redford saw a steady decline, the same decline Rachel Notley has been on for over a year.
By January 2014, Alison Redford’s approval plummeted to 35%. Three months later, after yet another spending scandal, Redford’s approval rating was a rock bottom 18%. She then resigned in well deserved shame.
What’s my point? At 37%, Rachel Notley is really just one good scandal away from Alison Redford territory. Now, I don’t think Notley would do the right thing and resign like big Red because I don’t think she is as ethical as Redford. I know, that’s not saying much.
But stay hopeful. If we learned anything from the PCs and their wild ride to the bottom, Rachel Notley will drag her party down with her, just like Redford did.
And the NDP will be obliterated in the next election, just like the PCs were.
