Notley’s “war on coal” KILLS entire town of Grande Cache Alberta

Sheila Gunn ReidRebel Host | The Gunn Show

Rachel Notley’s carbon tax is claiming its first victim: the entire town of Grande Cache, Alberta.

Grande Cache is a coal town. The town was built in 1969 as a service town for the coal mines and it grew into a service base for oil and gas companies drilling on the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rockies. The town has seen a series of layoffs over the last two years at the local coal mine and, according to one Grande Cache town councillor, a full one third of the town’s jobs have disappeared.

Grande Cache is facing aging infrastructure, growing debt, higher operational costs because of the carbon tax and a swiftly dwindling tax base caused by residents being forced to leave due to layoffs or business leaving because the people are leaving. It’s a recipe for disaster. The town is dying fast and that has prompted council to ask the province to examine if the town should dissolve back into the surrounding municipal district.

In November, right after the first NDP budget, Grande Cache Coal laid off 220 people and announced a suspension of underground mining operations effective Dec 24, 2015. The previous January, the company laid off 200 people when it suspended surface mining operations as a result of global coal prices. Grande Cache is a town of 4,300. One in 10 people in town were laid off in 2015, and that’s just at the coal mine.

The mine kept 40 people on, hoping mining operations would pick up. But Notley is ensuring it won’t. She laid out her plans to kill Grande Cache in her Climate Leadership Strategy.

Buried deep in amongst the tax hikes to diesel, gasoline, natural gas and rail fuel, was a tax hike that was meant to kill those coal mines still hanging on, the metallurgic coal mines like Grande Cache Coal. Notley put a massive tax hike on coking coal, coal not even used for electricity, coal like the kind mined in Grande Cache. Coking coal will see a tax hike of $63.59 per tonne in 2017 and $95.39 per tonne in 2018. That’s designed to kill coking coal and kill towns like Grande Cache.

This is exactly what Rachel Notley did to oil and gas and it worked. She’s taking advantage of the low world commodity prices and adding her taxes and uncertainty on top of it to smother what’s left of the market share in Alberta. It’s her recipe for destruction.

Notley just didn’t care. Grande Cache and all the people who call it home are just collateral damage in her war on fossil fuel wealth.

Just came across this. Mark Gulu, Do you anticipate an electric car that can go 1000 klicks without a recharge anytime soon? Wind is a disaster in Ontario, not to mention ya gotta mine for the parts in wind turbines and solar panels. Geo thermo, may be a good idea but again mining needed for the parts to drill and support equipment.

Change is inevitable. The highly skilled (and currently unemployed) engineers of the oil and gas industry should use their down time to start new businesses, not rely on government bail outs. Electrical engineers could build a new electric car to rival Tesla, hydro electric mills, geo-thermal drills and wind projects – there is no carbon tax on green energy. Alberta needs ingenuity and entrepreneurship to pull itself out of debt and back into prosperity!!!!

No exaggeration that this tax was intended to absolutely kill the metallurgical coal industry in Alberta. Implementing taxes of $63 and then $95 a tonne on a product that sells for about $84/tonne at current market prices is absolutely intended to kill an industry. These are real people with real jobs and real families. Devastating. So glad that the met coal mine I work at is on the BC side of the border…

NDP = Communism and Nutley is the most communist of all 50,000 people show up and surround the legislature and demand an election

More proof, the ndp is a criminal organization, worse than that they’re killing Alberta just for the joy of watching it die. What a sadistic bunch of low life psychopaths.

Will do Lawrence, and in the meantime our paths will surely cross on the Rebel , if my head doesn’t explode in the process. Cheers

LAWRENCE O’BYRNE: Its a bit like watching a pot of water on the stove come to a boil. It seems like it will never happen, but I see NO chance of the dippers changing course, so believe me, it will boil over. A bit of patience may be required, but when the union idiots themselves star feeling the pinch and seeing the light, and start losing their jobs and homes and COMMUNITIES, maybe then sanity will reign. Will we recover from the trash heap? Only time will tell, but it won’t be with the NDPees green policies, that’s for sure. If it was only Alberta it would be one thing, but with but a few sane enclaves in the country, the lefty falsehoods have permeated and with the CBC leading the charge we have a big hill to climb. I know how we both feel about Trudope. God help us all.

Lawrence, If I head to Lotusland to visit my kids this fall, I’d sure stop in Chilliwack and buy you a coffee if you wish. I think we could have quite the conversation. Let me know if that could work.

@ david , is there no one in alberta that can organize transportation for mass demonstrations to the capital, with all those towns and blue collar workers from the resource industry being put out of work , what about the private sector unions that represent these workers, why are they not getting involved, she’s putting your province back into the dark ages and i see very little push back, where is the opposition in parliament, they seem very quiet ,are they helping to sell out your province , i want to see alberta succeed and get back on their feet again ,but under nutley it wont happen, all those blue collar workers between 25 to 50+ years old must be feeling a lot of anger and want to do something to get rid of this nut bar ,i would be willing to donate money to a legitimate cause like that, why was she allowed to increase the public service unions ,it looks like a ploy to insure future voters

This is a conspired global effort to destroy capitalism and wealth. Notley et all will pay big time, when the one who will judge all, returns to deal true justice! Time is not on Notley’s side. She’s younger than I am, and she looks haggard, from all that chain smoking. I quit that nasty habit 33-years ago. I was with a friend on the weekend and he purchased a 20-pack of cigs at a gas station, and the cost was over $15.00. When I quit a full pack was $1.57. I almost fell off my chair!

I’m too stupid to see the obvious but CATHY STONE nailed it. And if I see the Queen Rat flip her hair in another giddy , arrogant display of disrespect to the citizens I may need some crowd funding to help with my legal bills. She should be stuck in the middle of a busy driving range in the flesh. Golfers would be pleased with their immediately improved accuracy. And TARA HART, just a sign of further impending doom coming our way. My sympathies to all communities who will feel the wrath of the Rats.Welcome to ALBERTAZUELA. And don’t think for one minute that can’t happen here. The only question remaining is whether or not we can hang on long enough through the NDP scorched earth policy to get to the next election, because they will be DONE at that time. Whether by ballot or baseball bat they will be GONE.

Alberta is no longer RAT free, we have Notley and her New Demic RATS.

Notley and the New Demic RATS are destroying Alberta not through incompetence it is their plan. Now the RATS are trying to re-educate Albertan with the government propaganda commercials and trying to brain wash our children in schools with revisions to the education K to 12 curriculum.

Forestburg, Alberta is hot on their heels with the coal mine already done and the Atco coal generated power plant only having 1 unit running on a skeleton crew. The mines and plant were what people moved there for. Now there’s lots of houses for sale and a smaller population. Thanx Notley.

It boggles my mind that a group of socialists called a gov’t led by a 40+ Notley can destroy communities, destroy towns, destroy jobs, destroy billion dollar investments, destroy the economy all with a mind set fuelled by a scam fake science which they call global warming. They have no regard for the citizens & are acting like dictators. Why is this woman still the premier & has not been forced to resign before there is nothing left to fight for.
commented 2016-06-22 01:52:24 -0400
Dieter i agree , we will be hurt anyways, let the socialists have their way until there is nothing left for them to take. All we did under Ralph has been pissed away, we need to hit rock bottom and for the socialist idiots to starve before they will realize where it leads.

@david ,nutley wont know what that date is and neither will any of the millennials for that matter that live their life in a cocoon, i remember that date as she and her husband got what they deserved, it might be a sign of things to come as she is using a scorched earth policy on Alberta, did any one in Alberta know how radical she was before her election as i never heard too much about her [ hey kelly no period suck it up ]

Another march on the Legislature? Show Notley that there is such a thing as her mythical “Anger Machine”?

It better to let everything collapse. Yes, let Alberta collapse and die. Come the next election, there will not be a single NDP MLA or candidate willing to stick their necks out.

Of course, if you don’t want to wait until the next election, you will have to accept the reality that another march is not going to make any difference. You must accept the reality that there is a cultural war on in Alberta. Yes, there is a cultural war and it must ramp up. Only cowards are interested in respecting those that seek to destroy.

War must come. Be ready.
commented 2016-06-21 23:21:54 -0400
Albertan’s have to March on the legislature before it’s too late. You can’t sit calmly by until there is an election. The new government won’t have anything to save.

Well they can always golf if there isn’t any work I suppose!
This Socialist Marxist experiment is killing the Alberta heritage that people worked extremely hard to build.
It took courage, endurance and faith to build Alberta not stupid Socialist redistribution.
Socialism takes but just a few years to reverse everything that hard working entreprenuers take centuries to create.
Take a look at Ontario. Almost a replica of what’s happening in Socialist Europe. No one can be proud of that experiment! What a laugh. Canadians should be embarrassed of what’s happened to that once beautiful Province. Should be one of the richest land masses on the planet. Rather its the most broke.
Remember Saskatchewan during the Blakeney and Calvert years. Well I do. Hell I was even a young boy when Douglas was the premier. He had a dream for a “socialized Canada”. What a gauld damn mess that Province became. They are still bailing themselves out with Wall as Premier.
When I moved to Alberta it was like a fresh breeze rising up through your hair.
Got news for all you Marxist Socialist supporters. When the majority of you end up living off your government’s tit there won’t be enough private company (owners and employees) tax payers around to afford all your damn socialist programs and experiments.
All anyone has to do is judge past Social Engineering experiments. Venezuala, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Europe ….etc. . Years and years of Socialism. What makes Notely think the results will be different in Alberta? Implementing a Carbon Tax? Shutting down clean burning coal generators?
Mark my words Notely’s policies and iniatives will be more like the the Leap Manifesto than they will be different.
Anyone up for a game of golf? I sure the hell am.

This is only the beginning. Notley will wreck havoc on a level never before seen in Canada, let alone North America.

Just wait until the destruction spreads to every part of the economy and society in Alberta. Oh, and wait until the damage reaches even into the government? The Carbon Tax will strike everywhere, even the government. Not one public employee will be untouched by the impact of the Carbon Tax. And wait until they strike for pay increases because – you guessed it – they hold Notley over a barrel. Extortion of course.

I predict that at a minimum the unemployment rate will reach 35% and the population of Alberta will decline by 700,000. And in the face of this, Notley will run for reelection? Any of the NDP MLAs will run? Not unless they have a death wish.

It gets worse daily. Witch #2 sounds a lot like Hillary “we’re going to shut you down” Clinton as far as the coal industry goes. Is our little SS Premier that delusional? ( I picture her in SS garb next to Witch #1, K Wynne, also in SS gear- 1 rank higher). Will Rachael ever disclose the true cost of this folly? The cost to construct and install the bird blenders. The need for metallurgic coal to construct them to begin with. The $$billions$$ to buy out signed contracts for future coal powered electricity purchases. Not to mention the gigantic carbon footprint required to build and install the " green machine". All this for a scheme doomed to failure before launch. We already know how well things are rolling along in Ontario. And when you consider the need for back-up once her system is in place, there will be no gain as far as reducing carbon emissions thus defeating one of the goals of the project in the first place. ( there was a study complete with the figures done in Ontario that explains this, I’ll try to locate for the readers).

Notley best tread lightly on such thin ice. Think about it. She is destroying jobs, futures, families, businesses, and entire towns. She is introducing a scheme that will be fraught with corruption and will probably turn into Bombardier “West” with the need of constant and significant subsidies. The tax rape and pillage will be relentless. All of this to kill an industry with a present day need and a very bright and long future. My cousin’s husband worked for years on research into coal burning plants, and at a family function a couple of years ago stated how we should fully utilize our coal. He said with our very clean coal, and the modern scrubbers and emission controls on the plants, we would be fools not to do so.

Rachael would do well to have a look at Elena Ceausescu at 4:01 on December 25th, 1989. She could probably find it on u tube. Maybe she wouldn’t mind a few golf balls bouncing off a piece of cardboard if she saw that. I think she bit off more than she can chew, and time will not be kind to Ms. Notley!!

You can bet that not one teacher or bureaucrat will lose their jobs. Nor will the public sector union rats. When you become this ideologically obsessed , no rational argument can be made to stop the folly. Alberta is now under full socialist/Marxist control by a megalomaniac who fancies herself as saviour of the the world. And her plan is to run the debt to the point where the taxes they implement will be impossible to be reversed. It really is a DISASTER for Alberta but also for Canada.
