Obama wins on Iran deal despite opposition from Republicans, some Democrats

Brian LilleyArchive

Obama beats Congress on the Iran deal, and that is bad news.

There will be celebrations at the White House and among Obama supporters but the fact that his deal with Iran over their nuclear program is now assured of proceeding should be worrisome to anyone who wants peace, fears a nuclear Iran and supports Israel.

More on why the deal is bad in a minute but let’s go over what happened, why the deal is all but assured.

Obama needed 34 Senators to override any negative vote on the deal and he has them now.

Senator Barbara Mikulski, a veteran Democrat from Maryland issued a statement on Wednesday saying she will reluctantly support the deal struck between Iran, the United States and allies.

“The conditions for the lifting of sanctions are strict and verifiable, and with continued international support, sanctions could snap back.. The lifting of the sanctions comes more quickly than I would like, and snapback will require continued international support. But after considering the alternatives, I will support this agreement.”

Her support comes after two other Democrats that had reservations gave in to White House lobbying and backed the deal. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania issued a 17 page report explaining why he was backing the deal and Chris Coons of Delaware gave a speech to explain his support.

Make no mistake, these Democrats were subject to intensive lobbying efforts by the White House.

The White House still does not have enough people backing this deal to win a vote in the Senate, just enough to allow President Obama to veto anything coming out of the Senate that he doesn’t like. In essence, these Senators are allowing the White House to stop the Senate from performing one of their key functions, providing oversight on foreign policy and ratifying treaties.

The White House will strip that away.

Republicans have been universally opposed to the deal but they only have 54 members in the Senate, the Democrats 44 and there are two independents Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont both of whom actually caucus with the Democrats.

So Republicans knew they needed some Democrats to come out against the deal.

Bob Menendez of New Jersey opposes the deal as does Chuck Schumer of New York, a powerful man in the Senate.

Schumer rejected President Obama’s claim that it was this deal or war. Schumer said rejecting the deal did not need to lead to war and then explained why he could not support it.

“I believe Iran will not change, and under this agreement it will be able to achieve its dual goals of eliminating sanctions while ultimately retaining its nuclear and non-nuclear power.”

That is a real fear.

While John Kerry claims the deal allows inspectors access to any site at any time that simply isn’t true. The deal allows Iran to stall inspectors for nearly a month, to forbid them access to some sites.

Iran’s public claims on the deal are vastly different than what John Kerry puts out there.

So let’s look at the opposition. Like I said, all the Republicans, including the presidential candidates have hit hard against the deal but few as hard as Ted Cruz who says the lifting of sanctions and the release of previously frozen assets will enrich the regime in Tehran with billions upon billions of dollars. This is what Cruz has said about that portion of the deal time and again.

Now some, including some Republicans claim that Cruz shouldn’t be saying things like that. Is it accurate? Well, without the Obama administration Iran would not get that money and even John Kerry admitted in Congressional testimony that the money very well might be used to fund terrorism.

No deal, no money. No push from Obama, no deal to make Iran rich again.

This deal may make life a little more difficult for Iran but there are so many holes in it that like Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, I can’t help but believe it will not stop Iran’s nuclear program.

The Saudis don’t trust this deal and they are now expected by many to begin a mini arms race to get their own nuclear bomb as insurance against Iran.

An arms race in the middle east, Israel under greater threat than ever.

President Obama has said it was this deal or war, I say there is a very good argument to say this deal may lead to war rather than prevent one.

When Iran has nuclear bombs and the means of delivering them sometime in the not too distant future we can all thank Barak Obama for making it happen.

I know it’s long but many valid points. Especially the trade deal with Cuba which could potentially allow 250,000 Cuban troops to institute martial law in the U.S. Under civil war, there could not be an election

This is just Obama taking the next step of his plan, to force Israel to start WW3. He knows Israel will never allow Iran to develop Nuclear weapons. Go for it Israel, it is going to happen sooner or later anyway.

I really hope Harper can address some of what you are talking about Richard V. in this third term. Harper is our only hope for now. I am counting on him to make it matter this time around. If he gets down to it, it will make the lefts heads spin. A decent Rep. in the WH would help. I think a large part of the problem is that nobody has known what they are doing, but are starting to now get a better picture. I do feel that it is time for Harper to really make things count, and stop sitting on the middle fence. He needs to be on the right side in my opinion, punn intended.

The Canadian peddlers of “democracy” say Canadians can’t be trusted to concealed carry for self-defense… But that arming “Syrian rebels” to fight Assad is A-Okay… Bringing “Syrian rebels” to Canada as “refugees” is A-Okay. I’m starting to understand just what your “democracy” entails, and it is an anti-human, anti-liberty that is in-step with the “progressive” United Nations.

Meanwhile Russia is issuing concealed carry permits to it’s People, kicking Islamists out, rebuking the gay and “refugee” agendas of the left, kicking George Soros out of the country, engaging in meaningful military offensives against the Western-created “Islamic State”.

People often say, “move to Russia if you don’t like democracy”… Well for the first time ever, the pros outweigh the cons of such a move. What a sad state of affairs this supposedly free nation has become that Russia in some ways actually looks to have a better outlook for libertarian folks.

Regional powers need to accept the Muslim extremist “refugees” everyone now says. I can understand their apprehension to do so. This is Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey, Jordan, US, England, and Canada’s mess… Why would Shiite countries that didn’t create ISIS want to take the Sunni riff-raff being shepherded out of Syria? Brinkman should let the Sunni Salafists stay at his house… They can show him and his family their version of Sharia “freedom from oppression”.

Brinkman, your website is full of George Soros “Idle No More” trash.

Again, your military aid for Islamists approach to Syria is no different than Harper whom you claim to despise. You distort the true intent of the Muslim extremists Assad has “oppressed”. They are not overthrowing Assad so they can send girls to school and guarantee the Rule of Law… It’s to establish a Caliphate and commit acts of Quran-sanctioned religious genocide.

You are correct, you are NO Charlie Hebdo. You are a treasonous supporter of a CIA-backed Islamic State. A useful idiot for the George Soros deconstruction of Western civilization.

The enemy of our enemy may not be our friend, but often is of some use.
I hope the civilians caught in the middle can find temporary refuge in surrounding countries, I hope some aid can be received by them from us, without being intercepted. We are not the only country available to offer refuge, and neither is the US. At this time I don’t think it unreasonable to close our doors to Islam.

According to Richard Brinkman, the hardline Islamists who have attempted to set up a Sharia caliphate in Syria deserve our tax dollars and protection, because they’re oppressed by Assad. 10% of a secular country wanted Sharia and “jizya” in a secular country… So we should help them??? How “democratic” of you fools. I don’t see any burqas on Assad’s wife or daughter, meanwhile Harper bows to “king” Abdullah and Brinkman says Assad must be taken out. Looks like you’ve got more in common with Harper than you thought, Brinkman.
commented 2015-09-03 10:04:22 -0400
Brinkman, you are the worst type of “liberal” liar. The “family members” murdered by Assad were CIA-backed Islamic extremists… On one side we’ve got the fake right-wing telling us we must attack Assad and fund “Syrian rebels”, and on the left, we hear that we must intervene to stop Assad from killing Islamists that are overthrowing his secular country. You people are both full of shit, and your lies and deception have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Syrian Christians.

Never mind IRAN – All Eyes Should Now Be On Syria – Today’s Syrian Refugee Crisis may have been prevented by leaders in the West including Harper when in 2011 and for 9 months Edmonton Syrians rallied weekly with protests and vigils in Churchill Square and Gazebo Park in Edmonton and around the world – There were no responses from either the Harper Government, Corporate Media or by any of the opposition Governments when Edmontonians cried weekly over the deaths of family members murdered by the Bashar al-Assad Government forces.

Edmonton’s Communists and Marxist Leninist (friends of a certain NDP MP in Edmonton) hide behind the fake facade of Edmonton Coalition Against War And Racism ECAWAR . They have refused to condemn Bashar al-Assad killing of unarmed Syrians but instead would argue he was a great leader and blamed Israel’s Zionists and America’s Imperialist for Syria’s civil war.

Since 2011 half of Syria’s population has left thier homes and have tried to find safety in other nations because of the relentless bombing of Bashar al-Assad’s armed forces with weapons brought in from Iran, Russian and China. Bashar al-Assad also had the same diplomatic support from these countries.

How can I say this with knowing… During the first 9 months when Bashar al-Assad began killing unarmed Syrians – I was the only one reporting these weekly stories from Edmonton as a citizen news person while the Corporate News Media ignored invitations by the local Syrian community to attend weekly protests to hear thier pleas for help from the Harper Government.

Today the message to Harper, May, Mulcair and Trudeau is the same as it was to Harper recorded by citizen news media in 2011 from the Syrian Community – They don’t want military intervention, by Canada or NATO – They want humanitarian relief – food, clothing , shelter, medical and refugee status… and peaceful means of pressure applied on the Bashar al-Assad regime to stop killing Syrians…

I’m certain Harper will continue to ignore what Syrian Canadians want from Canada and will likely take our Nation into more wars in the future.

Sadistic, narcissistic haters of good, truth and righteousness. Just skip their comments, shaking your head. You can’t change others way of thinking if they are belligerent

“…In this month’s issue of Personality and Individual Differences, a study was published (link is external) that confirms what we all suspected: Internet trolls are horrible people.
Let’s start by getting our definitions straight: An Internet troll is someone who comes into a discussion and posts comments designed to upset or disrupt the conversation. Often, in fact, it seems like there is no real purpose behind their comments except to upset everyone else involved. Trolls will lie, exaggerate, and offend to get a response.
What kind of person would do this? Some Canadian researchers decided to find out…
Trolls truly enjoy making you feel bad. To quote the authors once more (because this is a truly quotable article): “Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others. Sadists just want to have fun … and the Internet is their playground!”
The next time you encounter a troll online, remember:
These trolls are some truly difficult people.
It is your suffering that brings them pleasure, so the best thing you can do is ignore them…"

Is ‘the end of life as we know it’, or worse just around the corner? Have you watched “The Day After” lately…The bright side of WWIII is…that it will probably put an end to trolls…Gee thanks Obama, Clinton and Kerry.

Why does the West judge the Middle East by Western standards? Have we so quickly forgotten the Muslim technique of taqyia (sp) — lying to infidels? Like Iran has a proven track record of trustworthiness — NOT! They’ve sworn time and again to destroy Israel and the United States — “Death to the Great Satan” (US), and “Death to the Little Satan” (Israel). Iran is on public record as supporting any group that wants to annihilate Israel and the Jews. And now we’ve just handed them a crapload of money in the form of eliminated sanctions. Brinkman, what do YOU think Iran will do with all that extra money? Support their poor and poverty-stricken? Support homeless and single mothers? NOT A BLEEDING CHANCE! This extra income will go straight to arms, armament, and increased support to terrorist organizations. This is a destabilizing country in the Middle East. Even Saudi Arabia doesn’t want a nuclear Iran.

This is not a peace treaty Obama’s engineered. Even if Obama thinks it is, he’s been royally hoodwinked. (And that’s a best-case scenario!)

Brinkman, peaceful negotiations and diplomacy only work if BOTH sides are in agreement. Iran has no such history. We in the West have just been royally shafted. Even here in Canada, Brinkman, the Muslims have no respect for our laws, so how can we expect them to abide by any “treaty” or agreement we reach with them? It’s their way or now way. So how do you negotiate with that?

Brinkman, grow up… and grow a pair.

(Will be interesting to see Israel’s next move. I’m fully expecting Tehran to become a wasteland under a mushroom cloud.)

The headline reads “Obama wins on Iran Deal”. Obama hasn’t won anything; not unless his objective is the destruction of western civilization and Islamic world domination. I suppose that might be his objective; if it is then maybe he has won. I have absolutely no idea how his mind works and I’ve stopped trying to figure it out. All I know is that everything he’s done on the world stage seems logically incoherent, counterintuitive and destined to lead to WWIII.

Funding Muslim extremists in Libya, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, among other places, purposely flooding the country with radical Muslim “refugees” from those nations. Yes my friends, Hope and Change.
