We know the shooters name was Omar Mateen but if you had just emerged from a coma and were reading mainstream media accounts of the odious events for the first time, you’d be left with more questions than answers.
The whole Islamist thing is downplayed to the point where the gunman’s true motives at the gay nightclub were questioned.
What was he up to? What was he trying to tell us? What does it all mean?
“Praise be to God, and prayers as well as peace be upon the prophet of God... I wanna let you know, I’m in Orlando and I did the shootings... My name is, I pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi of the Islamic State.”
Not a lot of nuance, but if that wasn’t clear, there’s the selfie on his Facebook page just prior to the massacre in which he pledges allegiance to ISIS.
But I guess it's all hearsay, and just like in the London terror attacks which came on the heels of the Manchester massacre, Prime Minister Theresa May’s tough talk about eradicating “extremism”, fails to mention what kind of extremism.
