Ontario minimum wage increase “not about helping poor people”

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

On Friday's show, I looked into the consequences of Kathleen Wynne's decision to raise Ontario's minimum wage to $15/hour.

Not only will a minimum wage increase force employers to cut workers, it will also disproportionately impact immigrants and teenagers.

WATCH my video to see the statistics that outline just how much damage this political decision will have on Ontario's economy.

Why in Alberta do we still have a temporary foreign worker program with so many people unemployed?
At our local co-op they hire and have had challenged people bagging groceries for years. I like them and it is good to see them integrated with our community. I doubt this will continue with the excessive minimum wage hikes.
I also think this will create an underground economy of cash workers working for less than minimum wage. Hey turdo these people do not pay taxes and are often taken advantage of by unscrupulous

Other than food and beverage jobs for servers who also usually make pretty good cash from tips, minimum wage jobs are primarily entry level opportunities and frequently a first job for low-skill workers, such as teens, recent immigrants, and single moms, where the ones who want to can gain some experience and knowledge, and enhance their future job prospects. Any damage done to their current prospects by excessive increases in minimum wage also damages their future prospects for self improvement.

It’s not that I think that Liberal, Democrat, and NDP governments who institute excessive increases know the consequences of their policies and are intentionally kicking ‘em while they’re down to keep them there, so that they have to keep voting for the other welfare state policies such governments impose, it’s ….

Wait. No. That’s wrong. That’s exactly what I think.

McDonald’s is already preparing for this with their big iPad ordering systems which completely bypasses the need for a counter person to accept orders. Expect to see more of this especially with lower wage paying employers
