Ontario’s education system gets failing grade from EQAO

Brian LilleyArchive

Just days before Ontario children will be heading back to school, the Education Quality and Accountability Office has just released a report measuring how well students are doing on standardized tests and the results are shocking.

Watch as I bring you some of the disturbing highlights from the report.

The Wynne Liberal government is offering the typical response sticking with the status quo curriculum but just proposing to spend more money on it.

Doing right by our children would mean giving up on their failing ideology and unfortunately, we won’t see that from the Wynne government any time soon even if the results say it’s time to change.

I’m a unionized teacher, and I vote conservative. You want to know why students are failing the EQAO exams?

Teachers are no longer PERMITTED to fail students. Teachers today endure pressure from politicians, school administrators, and parents to lower the academic standards in order to allow students to pass. Teachers are called “heartless” if they demand a little too much of the students or if they insist on upholding academic standards or if they give a student a zero for failing to submit an assignment.

Primary students are no longer expected to learn how to spell, parse a sentence, memorize the multiplication table. They are given calculators in Grade 3 math tests. High school students are no longer expected to solve trigonometry or matrix problems, memorize the Periodic table, nor understand ancient history. These used to be basic standards of the curriculum in Ontario. Today, by the time students enter college or university, they will have become ahistorical, illiterate, numerically-challenged, unscientific thinkers. College students can no longer differentiate between a historical event that took place 200 years ago vs. something that took place 2000 years ago. Even a basic historic timeline is absent.

Why do I vote conservative? Because it is my perception that the conservative party is far more interested in academic standards, in academic integrity on the part of its educational institutions, and in accountability. Conservatives should be demanding improvements in the curriculum and more testing/homework in the classroom. Teachers will support you. But judging from the comments here, no one hates teachers more than the conservatives.

Too bad. The only people who have the right values to fix the education system are warring against the teachers instead of reaching out to them. Teachers are not your enemies. The Education minister is.

Math scores going down, cost of schooling going up. Very unusual trend.

Its been years since i did the standardized testing. This was back in the mid 90s so maybe things have since changed. What i do recall though is that I wasn’t stressed out at all. I understood that my results will not affect my report card. Whether I pass or fail, my parents weren’t going to know. So i just went on and did my best to answer the math questions until i got bored. This would happen very quickly so i resorted to drawing comic book characters on the empty pages

Mystery solved. The person by Redenbacher is Liz Sandals, minister of education.

D. ALLAN: Maybe that’s not “Lurch” beside the abomination. I think he she it might be the “big lick”, but he she it sure looks like “Lurch”. You are absolutely correct on the union sickness though.

Is this what the citizens of Ontario want? The important teaching is the convoluted gender bender blender soup being spoon fed to what must be an ultra confused group of young children. Then darling Kate brings in the likes of Saint Suzuki with his playbook of scare tactics and climate indoctrination lies, adding more confusion for the young minds. All the while they are obviously not being effectively taught the meaningful things to assure them a chance in the real world, although the left is hell bent on turning civilization into something that is surely UNREAL.

Dump JT, the wife, the Wynne and the communist pig in Alberta

Is “bad” teaching the simple problem? Or is it “bad” curricula that is being taught? Or are we seeing a widespread change in children’s ability to learn? Are cognitive processes undergoing a radical “slowing down” in the developmental stages of learning?
If the problem is as widespread as it seems to be in the province, there needs to be a public “study” done to ascertain what is really happening.

Who is the female “Lurch” standing beside Wynne anyways?

The backlash should be against all the usual suspects that put the criminal Wynne in office.Namely the OPP Association(acts like a union)and all the Teachers Federations and Associations (more unionists) as well as the other public sector unions. All of them paid by the taxpayer and all using their union dues to elect frauds that put their hands in your wallets and purses every single day, stealing your cash and your liberty. And this doesn’t even address the way your children are being indoctrinated into the leftist godless world and falling behind in the critical subjects necessary in a technologically dominated world.
Of course next election we will get all the same threatening adds on radio and TV and the usual lies from the media. Your house will burn down, the cops will not be able to investigate because of layoffs , your grandma will die because of lack of health care due to cuts instituted by the evil conservatives. And off to the polls go all the trolls to screw us again.
Ontario is a dead carcass of its former self. The smell just isn’t reaching the right altitude to attract the buzzards.

That.s because 85% of the ones teaching math doesn’t meet standards either! Not hard to figure out why you do not have to be a scholar either. to see it.

Ontario’s education system now is really an indoctrination system. Students are being taught to be good little lefties by a cadre of left wing public service union workers whose only concern is feathering their own nest. Private schools are looking better all the time.

Kids can use the internet to learn better than in a classroom taught by unionized teachers
commented 2016-08-31 23:36:05 -0400
Well the system must work since educated people like those 2 make such wise decisions all the time.

Yeah lets spend more, that always worked in the past. I swear these socialists heads will explode when other peoples money does run out, they will actually have to think about an issue for a change.

I have a better idea.
Maybe kids should go to school in the afternoon. Say, 12 to 6pm.
That way they can sleep in (they’re all suffering from sleep deprevation from being on their iphones all night), they can actually focus on what they’re being taught, and they’ll come home to dinner.
Teachers would have to put in a full day though.
Better scrap that…that’d never fly with the unions to work a full day.
commented 2016-08-31 23:27:00 -0400
Well Brian, that is because kids are only in school from 8am to 1:50pm.
That means, with a lunch break and probably a morning break, they are actually ‘learning’ for maybe 5 hours per day.
Then they are home by 2pm, come home to an empty house, have no supervision and are left on their own to determine what area of education they will focus on to better their chances for a full and productive adult life.
WOW…no wonder why they’re so smart.
I guess that’s why Trubama only taught part-time. He wanted to work the same hours as students.

I know this is an old saying but it sure applies here.
“Careful not to let the school system negatively affect your child’s education.”

The socialites make sure to have us separate church and state in politics but when it comes to your child’s education; they are all over it.

Who is that “Thing” standing by the dyke?
commented 2016-08-31 20:11:31 -0400
They’ve been trying to dumb down the younger generations for 30-years. Now they are trying to destroy their minds with the pervert training being shoved down their throats. All that extra money will go straight into the teacher’s pockets, and education will not improve. Wynnie should resign and do something good for the people for a change. But we all know how greedy she is, she’ll likely die in office.

Our kids can’ spell, manage a debit account, make a budget, or do simple household finances, in grade 12. But dammit, they can name all 31 (mental illness) gender deviances from memory.
We are pumping millions of dollars into more math classes, thanks to Liz (i don’t read the curriculum) Sandals.
If theses two clueless twits had one clue between them, they still couldn’t add it up.

@bravo Zulu….I would add basic intro physics and chemistry as well as basic book keeping at high school level.

Ontario is Canada’s Peurto Rico – economically destroyed from within by a klepto cronyism and net exporter of skilled workers, investment capital and economic migrants.

@keith Richards
“Too many angry old lesbians running this province. "

But that is sexist and homophobic… Soon to be classifiable as mental illness. Soon we will all have to take our government issued Prozium.

All the perv sex ed time should be used for what we send our kids to school for. The three R’s . What teachers do is not rocket science. You don’t need to rewrite curriculum for some fancy new method to get them to learn and you don’t need to throw more money at it. I still say the public school system should be scrapped and there should be vouchers given to parents to use at the school of their choice run by the private sector, with teachers who are hired for their excellence and fired for their lack of performance. Can’t do that in the unionized hell we send our kids into everyday. We are pumping out too many teachers from teachers college these days, and the unions make it their job to get them all hired, good or bad, needed or not.

All sex education should be stripped out and reduced to a one day biology class about how babies are made in mammals. Everything else should come from parents.
You remove the sexualization of children from schools, and you will also see things get better fast.

Return to the three R’s and add history and geography for the first 10 grades – it will get better – FAST
