In the mainstream media's coverage of the two Somali sisters stabbed to death in Ottawa, Imam Anver Malam has received an enormous amount of airtime, commenting on the girls as well as their brother and suspected killer's mental state.
The imam and founder of the gender segregated Jami Omar Mosque, where the two somali sisters had their funeral held, has been repeatedly quoted by the press. His statements to the mainstream media describe the sisters as "eloquent and bright."
Moreover, the imam has been the primary source quoted in the press with respect to the suspect, Musab A-Noor's mental health. The Islamic leader urged the press to iterate that if society doesn’t “address the root causes” of mental illness, “it’ll keep coming back.”
So I sought out the imam who seemed to have a close connection to the family at the centre of this killing. But it turns out the mainstream media's chief source regarding the "mental illness: narrative was bunk.
When pressed, the imam admitted: He never knew the family, at all.
