PanAm Games organizers set CN Tower on fire in latest embarrassment

Marissa SemkiwArchive

So yesterday, in an effort to remind people that the Pan Am Games are being held in Toronto, the organizers attempted to blow up the CN Tower.

Well, not really.

Last night at around 8pm, smoke billowed out of the observation deck because incompetent game organizers had decided to test the opening ceremony fireworks without warning anyone.

The ensuing smoke exceeded what anyone predicted, expected or intended. I saw it 35 kilometres away.
Ironically, of all the things that have gone wrong with the Pan Am games, this is probably the least expensive and least harmful to taxpayers.

Boy, I know it’s just The Rebel, but this is still remarkably stupid.

“smoke billowed out of the observation deck because incompetent game organizers had decided to test the opening ceremony fireworks without warning anyone.”

So there wouldn’t have been smoke if they had warned anyone?

Guess what, professor: this was a test run, as even you managed to acknowledge. Yeah, it didn’t go as intended, which is the whole point of a test run. Criticizing it is just stupid, pointless bitching. I know that’s your purview — and probably your entire skill set — but you still manage to embarrass yourself with this. Nice work.

That’s ok, PK – apart from seeing Richard Thompson at Bluesfest, finding out for the first time what WABAC stands for made my weekend.

When the Pan Am Games was held in Winnipeg, it was a great success. Lots of volunteers, lots of media, lots of athletes from all of the Americas, and a few defections from Cuba. No scandals, and no cost overruns. You would think that Toronto organizers would have consulted with other cities like Winnipeg that had very successful games. But you would also be wrong if you thought that. Too bad, the games should be a highlight of athletic achievement, and a showcase for the host city. But instead, these games will end up being an embarrassment for Toronto, and the spill over of that embarrassment to the rest of Canada is what really pisses me off the most!

Sorry, Terry — that should’ve been aimed at Rick.

I’ve just got back from our RCAF SQ.6 DUNNVILLE meeting and here’s another idea from the past. Back when I was young in cities and towns election voting was allowed only to persons who owned property or a business as they had a vested interest in their town. Renters where considered transitory because they could move at any time. Personally I would be in favour of doing this. Owners of property have a vested interest in there town because they are the ones who pay the taxes. Since we went to any one can vote the city’s council have been taken over by spend-o-holic left wingers like the NDP or Lie-berals. We have seen the city’s budget and debts sky rocket to where owners of apartments are forced the raise rents where the un washed can’t afford. So they lay vacant and the owners loose money. Bringing back this system of voting will save the tax payer money and maybe get responsible people to lead their city.

Sorry, Sherman – can’t find the Wayback Machine. The good intentions were not, unfortunately, retroactive.

“Of course you are. You’re a Rebel Reader, my son: that’s your natural state.” Talk about smarmy responses! Where is that civility promised?
As per request. Vintage 1955, same year as the classic car I restored and own.

Ontario’s fling with degenerate socialism has made it very backward – The IQ bell curve in the public sector has taken a deep bend since the Libarno cronies helmed it. Anyone of any leadership intellect has abandoned the political arena leaving only the kleptos, control freaks, neurotics and pervs to run things – it shows when they cant make a buck on an international sporting event.

“Of course you are. You’re a Rebel Reader, my son: that’s your natural state.”

You may want to quantify your over-generalization somewhat, Terry — I’m a Rebel Reader, and I’m not pissed off, so that can’t be a natural state…

Damn… I just get home from work click myself right into another famous Terry spewfest. If there was ever a day without one, my day just wouldn’t be right. Or in his case, left. All the great vilification and demonizing you’ll ever need straight from his holy mouth. And I’d bow, but I will pass the honour for his comrade in crime. That being said…

The Pan Am Games was a crock last time and a huge one this time. Many see that and don’t care for it. Will anything be done to stop it? No… We’re Canadian and we NEVER actively oppose our great benefactors. How many times must I tell people we are boned for not ousting that socialist fungus that’s sitting on her dark throne?

Another Peterson/McGuilty/Wynnebag success story. Don’t be surprised if that slimmy little weasel, Dalton J.P. (Just a Putz) McGuilty shows up at the games to laugh at all the taxpayer money that has been flushed down the toilet on these third rate excuse for the Olympics. I am sure there will be a great use for a velodrome in Milton. Maybe they can use it for grain storage.

Fraser: that’s awesome about the Rebels on this site. In fact (in all seriousness), I’ll bet if you asked Ezra to set up a “Help Out Fraser’s Business” fundraising website, he’d probably do to help out a regular on the site, to make the government look bad. Seriously, send him an email – I’ll bet would.

Well Terry Rudden if you ran a business like I do and your customers are not allow to park in front of you shop so they take their business to another shop and I have to put up with this for 3 weeks. Will you Terry pay my rent and my employees salary let me know. Fraser McBurney, I have stated on different posts that I am 68 years old. However, my DOB is Feb 8th. 1948.
I see we are the same age. Well I am a few days older, does that make me your elder…Ha, Ha, just joking.

Well Terry Rudden, as I said, I probably wont get a sane answer – and I didn’t. No surprise, you cant even answer a simple question.
Did I hit the nail on the head when I said you were probably turned down by the Rebel, hence your hatred. The truth does hurt.
Like I said you are PETTY! Look up the meaning.

Marty ask Terry a valid question, and what does Terry do? He insults Marty. This is a common pattern. Then Terry wonders why people get so pissed off at him.

Terry if you would get over the attitude that you are are superior to the people that post here, you wouldn’t get such a hostile response.
commented 2015-07-10 16:10:43 -0400
Marty, I’ve often noticed that people find it hard to grasp motives or behaviors that lie outside their own experiential or emotional range. With that in mind, you should contemplate the small and sour scope of soul reflected in your missive.
commented 2015-07-10 15:45:19 -0400
Terry Rudden, I have a question for you, not that I will get a sane answer, however here goes. You continue to slag The Rebel .media every chance you get and you slam the Rebel staff, so why do you tune into the Rebel and watch and listen to the reporting? You hate the people that present the stories and you continually put down the Rebel .Media. There are times when you almost make sense but those times are so few and far apart as to be inconsequential.
So, why do you do it? To me it seems that you are extremely jealous and wish you were a part of the Rebel, or maybe you were turned down by the Rebel when you applied for a job. That seems more likely.
You are petty.

Just went out to the street here in Hamilton This stupid Pan Am organizers have covered up all the parking meters for 1 kilometer on King Street with bags that say no parking for the game at Tim Horton’s Field NOTE they never do that for the Tiger Cat Games. These potentates have no idea how to run a game far less a business. Us little stores restaurants and shops depend on passing traffic the extra sales we make when the Ti Cats are playing at home With no parking on the street how can people come to our stores. The little T shirt shop put out extra bucks for the added sales THAT WON’T BE COMING NOW. The restaurants that bought extra food for the expected trade IT WILL BE GOING INTO THE GARBAGE NOW. Thank you Pan Am dis-organizers Thank you Lie-beral government you prove once again how incompetent you really are.

Think your guess might be somewhat accurate, Terry… faulty dry-run, perhaps? (Or was it dress rehearsal?) Still, one has to wonder at competence if the amount of smoke created was far more than predicted…
