Portland Community College has decided that April will be “Whiteness History Month” - a month designated for criticizing white people.
According to the PCC website, “Whiteness History Month: Context, Consequences and Change is a multidisciplinary, district-wide, educational project examining race and racism through an exploration of the construction of whiteness, its origins and heritage. Scheduled for the month of April 2016, the project seeks to inspire innovative and practical solutions to community issues and social problems that stem from racism.”
The website goes on to say that this isn't a celebration of white history, unlike 'black history month' and other heritage months, which are.
“Whiteness History Month Project, unlike heritage months, is not a celebratory endeavor, it is an effort to change our campus climate. The Project seeks to challenge the master narrative of race and racism through an exploration of the social construction of whiteness. Challenging the master narrative of traditional curriculum is a strategy within higher education that promotes multicultural education and equity.”
Under the PCC's 'diversity definitions' it states that racism is “A system of advantage based on race and supported by institutional structures, policies and practices that create and sustain advantages for the dominant white group while systematically subordinating members of targeted racial groups. This relative advantage for Whites and subordination for individuals of color is supported by the actions of individuals, cultural norms, and values and the institutional structures and practices of society.”
So, according to Portland Community College, racism is limited to white people keeping people of colour down and other races cannot be racist.
In a sub page defining the term taken from the University of Calgary, it's shown that 'whiteness' is different than 'white'.
“Whiteness has a long history in European imperialism and epistemologies. It does not simply refer to skin color but an ideology based on beliefs, values, behaviors, habits and attitudes, which result in the unequal distribution of power and privilege based on skin color,” it says.
