Proposed “Halifax Explosions” CFL team name ignites outrage. Was media punked again?

Have you heard the story about a group suggesting the nickname Halifax Explosions for a proposed CFL franchise in the city?

The explosions nickname refers to the biggest tragedy to befall Halifax when a century ago, two ships collided in the harbour killing an estimated 2,000 people.

The moniker is the brainchild of a group called CFL in Halifax but where’s the logic in marketing a name that’s so closely associated with death and destruction?

Naturally, people were outraged on social media, but as soon as I saw the Halifax Explosions story, I knew something didn’t add up.

Congratulations to whoever is behind this. You generated millions of dollars in free media coverage about a non-existent logo for a non-existent team!

Well done!

Were the “Hairy Tacos” a girls field-hockey team? LOL! Did they have a team logo?
When I was in High School during the late 60’s/early 70’s, we could have certainly had a similar name for our girl’s field-hockey team.
I was apprenticing in the Sign Painting Trade in the mid 70’s, under a “real amateur stand-up comedian” of a boss, who one day said that Tracy Stars strip-club downtown had a banner in their front window that said “Come In & See Our Cunning Array of Stunts”!
I sure miss those days. Nowadays, no-one can even say “shit”, even if they have a mouthful!

Maybe one of these days Menzies can make a list of all major cities and give them new team names.

Perhaps Winnipeg can have a team called the flood? Or the welfare recipients?

This what passes for journalism in Canada these days. Insert face palm here. Some people should demand a refund on their tuition for Journalistic Studies.

We had to play b-ball against the Castor Raiders.
