Question of the Day: Should gender be removed from birth certificates?

Emily PrattRebel Correspondent

Activists in British Columbia want gender removed from birth certificates, and have taken their case to the provincial Human Rights Commission.

I took to the streets of Toronto to ask if this was a good idea.

Ontario’s sex-ed curriculum sexualizes young children, undermines parental authority and imposes the government's morality on every Ontario family.

@ LINDA CAYER , Well said! : "I see no purpose in being mean spirited towards
people who can’t fit squarely into a round hole. We can be kind without losing our own unique qualities . " Amen to that!

As the comments piled up I began to feel very sad for those whose lives are so screwed up…and I know of those who had both genders given them at birth through no fault of their own…and had to deal with many difficulties and hurts from teachers and others, not to mention hormone injections to prevent bone density problems, and operations to remove certain characteristics…it is all very dismally abnormal and hard to reconcile…I cannot possibly understand the depths of feeling such people have to deal with…I agree with Linda C. here…and that parents, who wish, should be able to have the gender/sex left out of the original birth certificate… especially when problems might be obvious, and that those who choose to remain the old way can and should. Let it be optional and changeable like names…I can only imagine that that must be very painful…especially as so many here REALLY IDENTIFY with who they are…what if you didn’t? Can you even imagine it? I will leave the judgment to God…He knows certain people are androgynous…that should tell us something…either it is an aberration or perhaps Adam was androgynous before Eve was removed from him…food for thought…our business is to love one another “in honour preferring one another”…that is hard enough to keep us busy for a lifetime.

WTF. People don’t have anything better to do? If someone doesn’t tell me what I am then how will I know? You’re whatever you want to be. Gimme a fucking break from this megaphone screaming 4% that label naturally evolving society as bigots

Good points, Trish and Liza.

Gender is the package you were born with, genitalia. You either have a male or female set. Two, two genders, only. Sexual orientation doesn’t always coincide with the package you were born with. Your sexual orientation, what you identify as is none of my business. I guess I resent these gender activists making it my business. and expecting such ridiculous accommodation.

Activists in BC, stop navel-gazing and look a little lower. Innie means female and outie means male. What happens after that is where your fight lies.

David Cooke stated the obvious clearly. But, I do wonder at times just how many traditions, customs and facts can be tossed aside by way of Human “Rights” tribunals?

Thanks Peter! :-)
What the socialists can’t take away from me is my sense of humour, and my compassion for my fellow man! They say that comedy is the flip side of tragedy, so it will serve us all well not to take this political set back in AB to seriously. We will find away to endure as we always do. I just hope those that voted to throw our economy under the bus, are paying attention to how the socialists undermine our democracy, and democratic rights. If this lesson in socialism works out the way I hope, then these socialists will be thrown out in the next election.

So we will have to with gender neutral names? Then there the issue of passports, will other countries accept passports that do not indicate the sex of a person? Also, how will the sex ed books be changed to explain how babies are created if gender is to be removed from the vocabulary?

I think that removing male/female designations from birth certificates potentially invalidates the inclusion of sexual physiology (sex) as an enumerated, prohibited ground of discrimination under section 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Parents who refuse to identify their offspring one way or the other (unless obvious physical indications of hermaphroditism are present) should simply be denied a birth certificate, as this is nothing short of psychological child abuse. Let them explain to their kid why he/she has no birth certificate or Social Insurance Number, and let the kid sue his/her parents once they turn 18.
An infant has no self-identity until the point at which he/she learns to distinguish between him/herself and his/her mother, what Lacan called “the mirror phase”. The sex-specific body one is born into is (more often than not) equivalent to the gender and sexual identity confirmed as one grows older. While not always the case, as demonstrated by the existence of transgendered individuals, labelling a newborn as either male or female, based on obvious, visible physical anatomy, is clearly not necessarily determinative of one’s gender identity and/or sexual orientation. And should one later choose to change his/her gender identity, he/she has that option.
Aside from the enumerated categories of prohibited discrimination in Canada, the courts and governments have recognized several other analogous categories, including sexual orientation, but such recognition is premised upon “immutability”. In other words, it must be a personal characteristic that cannot be changed or can only be changed at excessive cost.
If sex is no longer assigned at birth based on physical characteristics, but becomes simply “To Be Determined”, then it is hardly something that cannot be changed.

These vocal aggressive minorities don’t get to rewrite gender and force it as the norm. Go ahead, take it to the provincial human rights commission. Be what ever you want, but don’t expect the world to change all definitions to suit you. This is about more than including the “different”. It is a political, socialist, Marxist take down.

Maybe we just let the parents decide at the birth. Those who say no to listing sex can have their way – and the nurse can just enter “too stupid to breed – sterilization required” which will prove to be the case down the line growing up with those kinds of parents. Does Moore’s law apply to the number of stupid people in the world? Seems that the level of stupidity is doubling every two years, as are the number of idiots.

David said, “You either have a Y chromosome, or you don’t”

And some men seem to have more than their fair share!

The world has gone completely bonkers!!! When exactly did nincompoops become the majority? I know when I was growing up, most people still understood the concept of objective reality. So when did relativism become normative, and how did it happen? And, by the way, if the Human Rights Tribunal becomes involved, you can almost guarantee the final decision will be something unbelievably stupid.

Deborah, that would be quite the funny epitaph! ;)

It’s this sort of deviant liberal thinking, and the welcoming reception it finds among our intelligentsia, that occasionally makes me give fleeting thought to converting to Islam. They may be culturally backward, but they do have a “right” and a “wrong”. I miss that.

I thought birth certificates record not GENDER but SEX (your biological, anatomical, genetic identity as male or female). Granted that an error is possible under extremely rare circumstances, it is nothing that a genetic test cannot establish 100% in our modern scientific era. (You either have a Y chromosome, or you don’t). Your sex is something fundamental to who you are, not arbitrary, and not changeable (except in superficial and artificial ways). This is extremely useful information to have on the public record, and it must not be removed from birth certificates.

This is probably the most moronic idea I have ever heard floated as serious thought.
commented 2015-05-26 18:03:59 -0400
Absolutely not! There are only two genders, that being male and female. If the government wants to offer to remove a person’s gender, then let them pay extra for it, but leave mine alone. Offer it like the legal name change, complete your application, and send in your money. I’m going to my grave as a female, whether these losers like it or not. I may even have it engraved on my tombstone, to let the birds know that, I walked this earth as a female. This idea is so stupid it hurts!

“Should gender be removed from birth certificates?”

No, since there are only two genders anyway. Not hard to tell which one the child is.

What whacko made this up?

Oh, wait – it’s another entitled Canadian idea – from BC no less.

Frankly the women I know are proud to be women (F) – and I for damn sure am proud to be a man (M).

Give me a break.

Human Rights Tribunal? A joke – so they will recommend removal.

An appointed body with too much power, too little guidance and no damned common sense – all set to destroy the culture we grew up in.

Although I am one of those who favour names like Leslie and Shelly and Blair that are androgynous, i find this question of gender or sex on birth certficates infinitessimally unimportant. Who cares? It is irrelevant. Remove the gender; make us all guess what your genitals look like.

Generally, if someone dresses and acts like a man or a woman, that is the gender most will assign to them. Genitals are irrelevant.

Although I do get why, for security reasons, some may wish to maintain gender/sex ID on the birth certificate, with fingerprint and iris recognition technology, we really no longer need to go all invasive for ID.

Most of the trannies have mental issues too. Tranny suicide rates are substantially higher than “average”.

Not surprising that the trannies want to do more destruction to the system before they hang themselves.

To all you trannies, if you want to “live and let live”, then leave us the fk alone too.

The name given on the birth certificate more often than not implies a gender so is society obliged to identify their children with numbers so as to accommodate boys who’s mother wanted a girl?
