THE BULLY BLINKS! Notley abandons her attempt to blacklist The Rebel — for now.

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

Faced with a national storm of outrage, an embarrassed Rachel Notley backed away from her illegal blacklist of journalists. That blacklist had a single name on it: TheRebel.media — and anyone even “connected” to us.

The only problem is, that’s illegal. Governments in Canada can’t regulate journalists, or restrict who is allowed to enter public buildings like the Legislature, based on political vendettas.

Notley’s blacklist wasn’t a casual or thoughtless decision. It was carefully considered, lawyered and surely approved by the Premier herself. She even had the temerity to order a Department of Justice to send it to us:

Well, that’s un-Canadian, and Canada overwhelmingly told her so. Notley’s shocking attempt to ban journalists she doesn’t like dominated national news, trended on Twitter and Facebook, and even made international headlines.

So today, a Notley spin-doctor issued this statement:

"We’ve heard a lot of feedback from Albertans and media over the course of the last two days and it’s clear we made a mistake. The government has appointed former Western Canadian Bureau Chief for Canadian Press, Heather Boyd to consult and give us recommendations on what the government’s media policies should be. In the meantime, no one will be excluded from government media events."

Translation: Notley was fine with being a bully, when she thought she could roll over us, like she rolled over farmers and oilmen.

So, it’s a partial victory. But pay attention to that last line: Notley has hired an “expert” to advise her on how to handle troublesome journalists. The lifting of the blacklist is only “in the meantime”. Notley may well revert to a policy of government-regulated journalism, if her hand-picked advisor can find a way to spin it.

But the law is clear: we have freedom of the press in Canada. No matter what Notley or her hand-picked advisors say. Governments do not have the power to regulate journalists. And any blacklist barring journalists from public events based on political vendettas is obviously illegal discrimination.

So: it’s a partial win — a win for freedom, and for Albertans who want independent journalism. But there’s a massive loophole built right into it, for Notley to come back and regulate later.

Rachel Notley is a bully. She just couldn’t get away with it this time. But she’s not done trying. She’s taken no personal responsibility for this illegal blacklist. The unsigned statement’s passive tone  — mistakes were made — shows Notley is genetically incapable of saying “sorry”. Not to our reporters Sheila Gunn Reid and Holly Nicholas — Notley never would, and it worthless to us. But saying sorry to Albertans, for sacrificing their culture of freedom to “get even” with her critics.

As to The Rebel, we’re going to keep doing our unique brand of journalism — news, opinion and activism. We obviously are covering it in a way that no-one else is — a way that Albertans love, and Notley hates. That’s a pretty good form of media accreditation, don’t you think?

We're going to keep reporting the truth about Notley. Because Albertans love it, and she hates it.

Ezra Levant
Rebel Commander

P.S. We will be demanding that the Department of Justice officially confirm that the illegal blacklist is removed, and is removed permanently. If Notley tries to weasel her way back to another blacklist, we’ll just have to do this all over again — until she accepts freedom of the press on her own, or a judge tells her to.

What we are seeing from the NDP is the bully tactics of unions, which is no surprise considering the union affiliations of the Premier, Environment Minister, Education Minister, to name three, and the various advisors to the cabinet and caucus. It was Union bully tactics Harper addressed with his union secret ballot and union transparency bills, which Junior is rescinding in payment for Union leadership support. Only a push back such as from The Rebel, will stall bully tactics but the unionists are born bullies and will keep at it, so far Bill 6, carbon tax, and censoring a free press organization. Expect much more bullying as this government proceeds. As I wrote once before, Notley was likely one of those blonde alpha girl bullies in school.

I’m surprised a photo op didn’t happen showing Rachel with real tears running down her face, begging TheRebel, and Albertans for their forgiveness. That is the apology that we the people should have received. Given that we didn’t, you know that Rachel and her class communists are trying to reword their censorship document to attain their goal of secrecy. Rachel needs to resign, and call another election. That would be the right thing to do for Albertans!

Good for the Rebel!!! i think the Rebel is becoming a force to be feared , exposing things politicians would prefer to be kept quiet.
Keep up the good work Ezra, Brian and everyone else .
I see a day when the Rebel will be feared by them all, they see the power that the Rebel can command in bringing many Canadians together and speaking out in huge numbers.
they cannot ignore
Maybe the mainstream media will see the power of the rebel and grow a back bone and report the proper news. not the milk and cookie news they report

Great job Ezra, the squeaking wheel gets the grease. By baring your News Feed they have only created more publicity for The Rebel, in another few months The Rebel will be the top news media in Canada. It is the only one that gets the truth out their to the Canadian people.

“government’s media policies”
notley and co. have NO RIGHT to impose their parties “policies” on ALBERTANS GOVERNMENT. We already have a government media policy in place, it is the same policy that notley just attempted to ignore, and that got her resoundingly slapped back into line. There is NO grounds to implement ANY policy beyond what is already in place.

" . . . it’s clear we made a mistake."

That’s not correct. No mistake was made.
The wrong journalists weren’t mistakenly thrown out.
There was no clerical error that inadvertently put the wrong names on a list.
Blacklisting journalists, without just cause, isn’t a mistake . . . it’s a crime.
Impeding freedom of the press isn’t a mistake . . . it’s a crime.
No need to hire a “consultant” to recommend what a government’s media policy should be. Government’s media policy has already been established, put in writing and posted in Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. You can go back home Heather Boyd, your services are not required.
Rachel, you’d be better off hiring a defence lawyer for yourself. Your weasel-worded statement, concocted by some toady lickspittle, isn’t worth a hill of beans.

Ezra sue the sheriff or file official complaints ! Make a big stink over every stupid thing these people do publicly. They need to be exposed, big time!

Ezra Levant !! you are light years ahead of these archaic bully government types ! Go for it ! You are the only one asking the tough questions here and we need your media here ! Thanks !

I watched full length Rebel videos on the National Post. They gave great coverage. Is there a merger in the works? I’d love to see a right-wing media conglomerate: print, TV, radio and internet. Ezra you could be Canada’s version of Bill O’Rielly.

You’d think with 35% of the country voting Conservative there would be lots of customers.

Way to go Rebel. Keep fighting for freedom and the truth!!

Didn’t William (Bible Bill) Aberhart have some problems with the press in the 1930’s? If I remember correctly the Lieutenant-Governor of the day refused to sign a Bible Bill piece of legislation aimed at controlling the press.

Please don’t let that sheriff off the hook. He – unlawfully – forced the Rebel media pers off of the legislature. Were the hell are his scruples? Talk about abusing authority.

Thanks for your hard work, Erza and staff. It is much appreciated. Stay classy! The more you report the truth, the more we inch closer to some sense of normality.

I am not surprised at this, as in my early life I have lived under a socialist regime. To suppress opposition, silence critics and eventually police your thoughts – It’s in their DNA. What I am surprised at however is the fact that Alberta voted for them! What were you thinking Alberta?

“The Destroyers” really got to them, didn’t it?

Marxist theory promotes pushing the boundaries to the limit of some level of public appetite…. its why many communists support NDP…. it’s why trudeau senior became a liberal and not NDP.. so it’s no wonder Notley’s oil review stated that “Now” is not the time for a big cash-grab… this indicates that after a certain amount of public conditioning, it WILL be the time for a cash-grab.
This situation is not much different… she’s going to hire someone to tell us what we think, but “In the meantime”.. it’s status quo…. left un-checked, both an massive cash-grab from oil and media censorship are coming….

NDP “we made a mistake” ! The Rebel is making waves and the NDP admitted they screwed up. Ezra was on radio 590 today and it was great.

Great, but, typo. This needs to be fixed:

“She even had the temerity to order a Department of Justice to send it to us:”

Do not forget, The Supreme Court of Canada is owned by the Liberals.

You knew Albertans were in trouble when Notley immediately imported The Eastern Crew, Ann McGrath, Brad Levine and Brian Topp to “administer” the province. They are the ones that successfully torpedoed the NDP win for their party in BC…. So Competent, they can’t even deliver a sure win for their own party!
commented 2016-02-17 16:06:13 -0500
the other bully in the room (the cbc) has also blinked to some extent and has reported on this and has also eased the censorship just a little. im sure that wont last.. but they did censor mention of justins non answer to a question he didnt like “you must be from suntv!”…..oops it was actually a question from a cbc “reporter”..

The rally at the Legislature scheduled for noon on March 8th should be widely publicised; George Clark is going to present his petitions calling for plebiscites on Bill 6 and the Carbon Tax at that time. Albertans need to show up on mass to register their discontent with the current illegitimate government. Just Google ‘George Clark FAQ’ and get involved now and on March 8th!!

As a lawyer Notley should realize that her lawful authority is only via public consent and nothing more. She hasn’t been crowned Queen of Alberta free to rule as she feels fit. People barely tolerate the status quo as it is now and are waiting for an election to set things straight.

The best thing she could do, for the sake of her party, is to step down and allow someone with an ability to work with people to take over. Even better would a July election.
commented 2016-02-17 15:53:25 -0500
Hey, Notley.
If you’re not reading this, I know one of your lackey’s is and then getting back to you.

Give The Rebel staff a heartfelt apology (that’s if you have heart). Do Alberta a favor and resign. Call for a new election. Quit. Stop getting fat at the trough. All of the above.

If you can’t do any of the above – just fuck off … we’ll be happy either way.

Greg Kaufman – it was kind of like giving a compliment, and then receiving a slap across the face instead. The MSM is now expendable due to their collusion with all levels of government. And we all know the childish rants of the lunatic left, they always have to blame someone. It is a sign immaturity, and it is rampant in all levels of government now.

The very morning Notley woke up to the fact she was the premier, her first thought must of been ,,Oh My God,,what do I do now.

I doubt Michael Mann is his real name, as that’s the name of the guy who came up with that phony hockey stick temperature graph.

Which conveniently eliminated Europe’s Mini Ice Age and the Great Medieval Warming Period.

The battle is far from over. On one hand the mainstream media reported on and objected to the ban but made disparaging remarks about TheRebel with the other. Robert Fife, now with the Globe and Mail, basically said that Ezra Levant was a racist on CTV’s news channel Power Play yesterday.
