Alberta beef farmers are under attack. Earls Restaurants has decided to source their beef from Kansas because they think Canadian ranchers aren't humane enough, Earls wants Canadian farmers to submit to an expensive monitoring and licensing process by an American company to prove what we already know and what the Canadian Food Inspection Agency already regulates very strictly: Canadian farmers are the best farmers on the planet.
Alberta politicians have come out in defence of Canadian beef producers. Conservative MP Jason Kenney, Wildrose leader Ric McIver, Wildrose Party Agriculture critic Rick Strankman and Wildrose Party finance critic Derek Fildebrandt have all been vocal about their support for Alberta cattle ranchers.
What about Rachel Notley? Now is her time to shake off that awful perception Alberta farmers have of her. Surely she would jump on this opportunity to repair that fractured relationship. But she didn’t.
Notley thinks Alberta farmers need more of a labelling bureaucracy. As reported in the Calgary Sun, Notley urged a round table on organics instead of defending Alberta farmers from insinuations of inhumanity.
Rachel said in a teleconference from Washington that “There’s no place in the world where you can get more tasty beef than in Alberta,“ adding that she hopes a national round table on certification of organics swiftly develops a certification process “that confirms what we all know to be true — that Alberta produces great beef, and that it’s the best meal you can order in any restaurant.”
Notley couldn't bring herself to say that Alberta farmers are indeed humane. She couldn't bring herself to defend Alberta farmers. There was never an argument that Alberta beef was less than “tasty”. Earls isn't looking for a certified tasty designation, they want a certified humane designation.
But really are we surprised? After the Bill 6 fiasco, we know Notley thinks farmers are a bunch of dangerous, unsafe yokels who are mean to their employees. Why wouldn't she think that farmers are awful to their animals?
