Ray Heard: Toronto Star's "Harper worse than ISIS" op-ed "is the worst column I've ever read in Canadian journalism"

Brian LilleyArchive

Last week I discussed an article that appeared in the Toronto Star by commentator Tony Burman.

The column, entitled, "Why Harper (and friends) are a bigger threat than IS", provoked a flurry of responses, most of them negative, especially critical of the paper for publishing the outrageous article.

I spoke with veteran journalist Ray Heard to get some perspective on just how out of step this article was in the tradition of Canadian journalism.

Ray had some pretty strong words for Burman and the Star in addition to expressing concern that this man teaches journalism at Ryerson.

He said, among other things, that he's never been more angry about something he's read.

Jimmy Da Silva, you’re an absolute imbecile. We all know about the terrorist attacks on Canadian soil. As far as I’m concerned, even one soldier killed on Canadian soil is too many. Do you care about that? What you’re either not aware of, or curious enough to research, is the number of terrorist attacks that were caught by the RCMP and the FBI, before they could be executed by muslim radicals. The Toronto 18 is a good example. Their plan was to blow up the CBC building, raid parliament with the intention of beheading the PM, and foot soldiers who would let go their rage with assault rifles on hundreds of people on the streets of Toronto. And that’s just one story. Yes jimmy, you have nothing to fear from radicals, as long as you continue living in your bubble. The rest of us choose vigilance and the understanding that our government is committed to the protection of us Canadians!!! Jimmy, go spit into the wind and let us know how that worked out.

Is there no longer integrity and truth in journalism these days??? We’re supposed to believe what the media tells us, but those days are gone thanks to the Toronto Star, CTV and CBC. What a disgrace to the industry and the people who believe in it. It’s shameful and untruthful. It’s gotten so bad that the CBC is doing very little to disguise their biased anti-Conservative message. Mansbridge, one of the worst offenders at the CBC in this regard, can in my opinion, GO TO HELL!!! The Toronto Star was my favorite newspaper for many years until it started to read like that rag the ‘National Inquirer’.

Joe Mac 3 days ago is right.
Everybody should ignore Jimmy the leftist troll.

So help me The Star really is a propaganda style newspaper for Leftist readers!
What ever happened to unbiased reporting and journalism that simply reports the facts instead of the journalists’ personal opinions?
If you can prove it’s true say it – otherwise don’t let it see the light of day! People know when your laying it on a bit thick!
The Main Stream Media has been doing this for years’ and it is only getting worse!

Were the negative letters to the editor published by the Toronto Star? Or were they discreetly deleted?
commented 2015-08-26 08:21:58 -0400
Gee JIMMY DA SILVA, if you have gone over this a million times, it should be pretty simple and easy for you to give us at least, say, a half a dozen examples. Have a good sleep Jimmy.

This JUST-IN { CBCtm} , the MSM are echo chambers for LIB/NDP campaigns and when it comes to the conservative voice they yank their soap-box with a vile vengeance ! This attack article is the work of feces flinging Rhesus , desperately hoping some feces will stick , THE RHESUS FACTOR of our so-called ’ PROGRESSIVES ’ !
Will Maggie Atwood write a re-BUT-tal , tee-hee !

I have gone over this a million times and I am too tired to do so again. If you want to go through this entire thread – you will see what I am talking about and what Joan has talked about as well as to what exactly Ezra does.
commented 2015-08-26 00:30:51 -0400
JIMMY DA SILVA, give us some examples of how in your unbiased view, of course, “Ezra lies, sensationalizes and promotes his radical right- wing ideas”?
commented 2015-08-26 00:14:57 -0400

You mean like how Ezra lies, sensationalizes and promotes his radical right-wing ideas on The Rebel?

You like what Ezra has to say – so you don’t see how hypocritical you are.

Ray Heard wondered how the Dean at Ryerson feels about Burman teaching journalism students. Wel, I received an email back from the Dean at Ryerson University: “We are proud to have Mr. Burman as one of our distinguished professors and he is a great contributor. We pride ourselves of nurturing a diversity of opinions and encourage discourse amongst our students. Furthermore a commitment to academic freedom is a value that is at the heart of who we are”. I guess having a professor who lies, sensationalizes and promotes his radical left-wing ideas is at the heart of Ryerson’s School of ‘Journalism’.

Thank you Joan. The Rebel REALLY needs more conservatives like you.

Listen, folks. The burning alive, beheading, raping and pillaging ISIS threat is but the tip of the iceberg. Jimmy is right that currently, a major terrorist attack on Canada is not a priority for ISIS executive. They consider Canada part of America. North America. We are a target but not an immediate target for their goal of establishing a global caliphate with brutal religious genocide.

Oh sure, some ISIS operatives have named Canada but most of them are now dead because they don’t make executive decisions for ISIS. The bigger current terrorist threat to lives in Canada comes from indviduals and small groups of mostly young people who are attracted to ISIS and other Islamist ideologies and who decide to make an attack separate from any central ISIS or other Islamist organization directive or possibly through social media contact with low-level ISIS agents.

And that is a real threat. Make no mistake. Via Rail, Toronto 18, Parliament …

The bigger current threat of terrorist attack in Canada comes from other Islamist organizations. ISIS ugliness tends to obscure the other threats, but we are still on Al Qaeda’s hit list and they have proven their ability to commit big acts of genocide all over the world.

But the real threat is more insidious than either of those. It is the stealth jihad of Islamist agents like Omar Alghabra who run for office and campaign by telling Muslim voters “Vote for the Muslim, not the Infidel” and who, when they win, say things like “It’s a victory for Islam” and who claim their views represent those of the Liberal Party of Canada. Shariah and democracy don’t mix.

ISIS poses a threat to the world. To civil society. To global integrity. They are engaged in the commission of ethnic cleansing and religious genocide. They have intimidated the whole world. They do business with organized crime all over the world. They trade with mob organizations and Mexican and South American drug cartels. They rob banks, sell contraband oil, trade in drugs, alcohol, arms and girls. They are not religious in the least. Their claim to religion is just a cover. They are plain, ordinary greedy power mongers. Psychopaths whose goal is global dominance through brutality. They must be stopped. And Canada must do our part.

Does another Harper government pose that sort of threat to humanity? Come on. Of course not.

You can argue Harper’s tough-on-terrorist policies threaten civil liberties. You will get a lot of Conservatives to agree with you. But he has no plan to suspend free elections and if we, the free people, decide his policies are too restrictive, we can vote him out.

ISIS can’t be voted out. They must be rooted out. And after that, Al Qaeda and Boko Haram and lawfare shariah creep in the west must be fought and conquered. This is a big, existential struggle free people must unite together to resist and to conquer if we wish to save freedom and it will take at least a generation, probably two or three, to accomplish.

Burman is an ass to claim PM Harper poses a bigger threat than ISIS. The threat ISIS poses is to all humanity. It threatens us all because we are all part of humanity and if we claim what ISIS does doesn’t affect us, ISIS has succeeded to diminish our humanity. That is the threat ISIS poses to Canadians. It threatens to diminish our humanity if we turn our back on its victims and say it doesn’t concern us because it isn’t happening here.

Claiming the PM of a free western democracy poses a greater threat to the world than does ISIS is an obscenity. And all who do not condemn that obscenity diminish the humanity of all Canadians.

Um, ya – that’s not going to happen. But do whatever you need to do to feel safe from terrorists. Have you built a panic room in your house yet?

I already answered yes.

Once again, JIMMY DA MOUTH, are you prepared to tell that to Cpl. Nathan Cirillo’s young son?

Jimmy da Clueless . . . they have already said they wish to attack Canada . . . you are so stupid you don’t believe them.
Jimmy . . . you and Justin related?

No real surprise here.. This piece of $hit, Burman, was head of Aljazeera Canada and a producer for CBC the National. Ryerson should be ashamed to be associated with such trash.
commented 2015-08-25 17:38:49 -0400
I beg to differ Jimmy. I look at the stats that come out of the UK, Sweden, and Germany, etc.. Canada is a valid target, you appear lost in American Obama-ism that perpetually discounts the importance of Canada on the global scene. Wearing rose-colored glasses won’t make the threat disappear or nonexistent. What you call “fear mongering” apparently is not how we who disagree with you would categorize “fear mongering”. We (conservatives) are not running around like that old Liberal attack ad claiming “soldiers in the street” line of propaganda. Common sense dictates that we as a whole remain vigilant. I would rather we err on the side of caution and vigilance rather than that of the side of blissful ignorance and denial.

Jimmy Da Moron what do you. Call Toronto 18 you brainless twit.
commented 2015-08-25 17:03:29 -0400

Lots of things are a threat that need our attention. The idea that ISIS is some massive threat to Canada is a fear mongering fallacy.

If there was going to be some major terrorist attack – it would be in America or The UK. Attacking Canada just doesn’t get them the same type of attention or make the same kind of impact. Terrorists ultimately don’t care about Canada – beyond an incident once every 10 to 20 years.

JIMMY DA SILVA said: (Amazingly!) “Ron, One random occurrence doesn’t mean that Canada needs to go to Defcon 1 – so to speak. For the most part, ISIS couldn’t care less about Canada.” Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. Before making yourself look like an ass, do your research! It is a matter of record there has been more than one occurrence on Canadian Soil. We have been fortuneate, due to the diligence of our investigative authorities, that only two deaths have occurred related to Islamic inspired violence, Cpl Nathan Cirillo, and the soldier (I forget his name) run over in a parking lot in Quebec and killed. “ISIS couldn’t care less about Canada” Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. Again, it is a matter of record ISIS spokespersons have stated they are coming for us in North America. Canada was specifically named. Perhaps you could travel to the Middle East and get guarantees for us they do not consider us their enemies? I look forward to your report when you return, if they allow you to return that is………….!

Jimmy, That is precisely the logic that the gay community used to continue their promiscuity tournaments like the gay rodeo after the first few AIDS casualties were reported. My wife was an AIDS support worker in two different provinces and my brother-in-law’s (my wife’s twin brother) his partner was among the first casualties. In fact a flight attendant who the disease control centre in Atlanta named as a one man epidemic Gaytan Duguay (no I didn’t make that up) ….lived on my street.

The odds were like being struck by lightning… throw caution to the wind.
commented 2015-08-25 16:44:03 -0400
Jimmy wrote: “Canadians are more likely to win 50 million dollars in the lottery as they are hit by lighting – while also winning a big jackpot in Las Vegas all at the same time compared to being attacked by a terrorist.”
Partly right, partly wrong if you want to use a gambling analogy. The odds are stacked against the terrorist(s) because Canada is on guard against terrorists thus decreasing the probabilities of an attack. Deny or deflect all you want Jimmy, the threat does exist.
