READ and DECIDE: Did a Quebec man get arrested for sarcastic comments about Muslims?

StaffRebel Columnist

Montreal resident Antonio Padula was arrested for alleged comments he made on Twitter about Muslims.

The state broadcaster reports that, “The charges laid Wednesday are tied to a series of tweets by a Twitter user with the handle @Hermit_Spirit, who got into arguments online about Muslims on Tuesday evening.”

In fact, it could be argued that his comments were in defense of Muslims. You can read his tweets here.

Police say, however, that things crossed a line when he appeared to suggest Twitter users should kill Muslims in order to stop sharia law from spreading.

In a response to a list of negative Islamic attributes such as female genital mutilation, honour killings and sharia law, the Twitter user replied saying, “I am against all those things and I need you to prove you are also, by killing all refugees at the airport before they come rape your family.”

He later added, “I need u to tell me how do we stop sharia law, before it hits US shores? I can only think of killing innocent muslims while praying, you?”

Padula was charged with uttering threats to an individual and public incitement of hatred against an identifiable group.

In Canada, the Death Cult is winning enabled by the Prime Moron!

As a previous reader already noted, it is notoriously difficult to identify intent on social media ( or even office emails) without the ability to see facial expressions (this would apply to women wearing a niqab, too, by the way!). Add to that the fact that most of the officers trolling social media for the greater good of our democracy (sarcasm intended!) are likely francophones who, while they may be officially bilingual, could not be expected to always pick up on nuances in their second language, such as sarcasm! That would be my defence, if I were this poor man!

One of the problems of written text is that you really don’t know the author’s intent until you hear the author give a reading. I loved the poem “Funeral Blues” by WH Auden….then I heard the authour give a reading of it on the Mercury Living Presence series of records and it creeped me out and ruined the poem for me.

Here is an example:

“I should apologise to you for remarks that were obviously anti-semetic”

First say it like an act of contrition….

Give it a second reading…but this time with a heavy New Joisey or Brooklyn sarcastic Jewish accent fending off a ridiculous demand for an apology

AYE!!…should apologise to YOU?…. For remarks that were OBVIOUSLY anti-semetic???!!!

The lunatics running this country (into the ground) care little for what the citizens who put them in power think.
As far as they are concerned, we can all “eat cake”.
Although I think that the Americans are living in a sick society with the rampant hate crimes and the number of sheeple ready to follow Soros like lemmings off a cliff and who are anti Trump, they do have ways of resetting the course their country is going for better or worse.
There are a lot of snipers available the push the reset button.

As for Canada, our laws won’t allow us to impeach or depose the POS sitting in parliament (or should I say traveling the world on our dime).

The US has POTUS (president of the United States) whereas in Canada, we have CAPONS (CanadIan A**hole PIece Of Natural Shi*).

For those with a post secondary education who may not know what a capon is, please look it up.

Those bastard Muzzie Islamists go and make constant threats to Christians, and all INFIDELS – telling us that Islam is going to conquer the West & post them on Facebook & social media as well as being promenaded on MSM and nothing is done – even after they make good on their threats – and absolutely nothing is done to them – except getting every unimaginable “RIGHT” and we the “cursed” infidels are supposed to talk nice?!
Well f**k that – time to lock & load people – because the damned police are in on this act of High Treason & and it’s about time we take their INSULTS & THREATS deadly serious & piss on TruDope – the Islamist knob gobbler and his cowardly tyrants called police!! How’s that for not nice speak – you POS TruDope!! You stupid lunatic – you have no idea of what kind of war YOU are starting!!

Are there enough balls left in Canada to fight back with?

Will they arrest Tarek Fatah even though he is a Muslim?
commented 2017-02-04 02:55:14 -0500
This is sickening , but the left will learn that only so many cops will go through with this crap and i doubt any of the military will go kicking in doors for Justins ignorance.
commented 2017-02-04 02:53:28 -0500
This is really ironic. A guy arguing for the Muslim invasion, which has resulted in this police attack on free speech instigated by Muslims, has himself been arrested for hate speech. Another example of the left swallowing it’s own tail.

Arrested for voicing his opinion. As repulsive as his comment to " killing innocent muslims while praying" is, it was framed as a question, not a threat. The police overstepped on this one. But like all police, they are seldom to admit a mistake, and would rather destroy a life than admit they were wrong. Welcome to the police state, formerly known as Canada.

If the guy that got arrested needs a Lawyer, we should crowd-fund, or eventually all of us will be arrested for just a thought.

Very dangerous precedent that leads down the rabbit hole to despotism.

Al, exactly. Optics are all they care about (hence the amazing, revolutionary sort of, mosque-shooting story brought to us by the Makers of Optimal Optics: the Canadian government and friends).
commented 2017-02-03 20:49:36 -0500
I know someone who, years ago, said to someone ’he’d kill him’ simply as coining a phrase. He was charged for utter a threat.
commented 2017-02-03 18:41:05 -0500
Connie, if that law is enacted as you describe it it is incumbent on all thinking people to flash mob across the country by the thousands and let them try to arrest several thousand people on one day. The optics would not be good for the dear leader.

Sarcasm doesn’t come across well on social media sometimes. The greater threat here for everyone is that rather than determining whether these tweets were sarcasm or not, the guy was arrested. This brings up the matter of M103, which brings up (at least to me) the recent mosque shooting wherein “facts” were transformed into a whole new story in a matter of hours. Facts that now support the passing of this bill. Bill M103 would make speaking against Islam a criminal offense in Canada, implementing a kind of sharia blasphemy law in Canada. It’s mind-boggling that the plan has actually worked so far and if we don’t stop this bill, we will lose our freedom of speech entirely. “Islamophobia” will carry over into every other kind of “phobia” the left comes up with, and we will be … European. There can then be no Rebel, a major bastion of truth in Canada, and we will be force-fed CBC truths on a daily basis. We will know nothing.

Well that’s rich ! — here’s the CRIMEMINISTER and his cohorts standing up in Canada’s house of voted in representives virtue signaling about they want to continue to make it easy for certain professions to CONTINUE KILLING certain identifable groups — BABIES !!!!!!!!!!!
commented 2017-02-03 16:47:05 -0500
Peter Netterville, Of course this rule of not insulting muslims should apply to all religions otherwise it’s biased and obviously sounds like an Islamic blasphemy law. But wait, don’t we already have legal protection for all religions in Canada? Actually no we don’t. Christians and Jews are constantly being insulted and spit on in the MSM, but that’s okay. You just can’t insult muslims or you’ll get thrown into prison. How right is this and does this make any sense at all in Canada? No it doesn’t and this pettiness and BS needs to stop now.
commented 2017-02-03 16:36:49 -0500
I suppose there’s a difference between an implied threat and sarcasm here. I don’t know because I don’t know all the details… For now I’ll have to say, no comment. I’ll have to get back to you on that.
commented 2017-02-03 16:22:17 -0500
Oh and Billy,

If they do come to the door, don’t be surprised if you get to enjoy a nice helicopter ride above the St-Lawrence river if you reside anywhere near there or the atlantic or pacific oceans if you live on either coasts.

commented 2017-02-03 16:20:03 -0500
Hey Billy!

Did the thought police get you?
You need to understand that we are no longer allowed to think except it it is to glorify the ruling politicos as well as the ruling class.
Do You know all those smart phone and I-pads are just toys?

Have yourself another think!

BILLY HOWARD; Sadly, that was hilarious.
commented 2017-02-03 15:45:18 -0500
So sarcasm is now illegal?
So if I said: “I want to kill everyone”, then I’d possibly be arrested? That’s something that…uh, wait, there’s a knock at my door, be right back…
commented 2017-02-03 15:41:00 -0500
If one can get arrested for insulting one or more Muslims, then a person should be arrested for insulting Hindus, or Mormons, or Christians, etc.

So why for insulting Muslims and not anyone else?

Can any of you who support this type of arrest answer that question?

Probably more than a few people here – like me – wondering when that 4:00 am door-kicking-in ceremony will be for some of the things we’ve dared to stand up and say…already.
Well I’m usually up by 4:00 am…and I got lots more to say!
Islam is the enemy…and they can all shove M103 where the sunny days are not.

No. Not just for Tweets. Although it perhaps would have been better to have suggested deporting them.
