Setting the record straight on the United Conservative Party’s pro-parent policies (Guest: Donna Trimble)

Sheila Gunn ReidRebel Host | The Gunn Show

There was a coup of sorts for parents’ rights in Alberta, but you’d never know it if you got all your news from the mainstream media.

Earlier this month, at the United Conservative Party’s founding convention in Red Deer, a slate of pro-family, pro-parent policies were overwhelmingly passed by the membership.

The policies affirmed the family as the building block of a functional society and entrenched the rights of parents to direct the education of their children. Pretty reasonable stuff, hardly controversial at all.

But, according to the mainstream media, the policies - ones that made no mention of sexual preferences or gay straight alliance support groups - amounted to a bigoted promise by backward hillbillies to “out” gay kids and return Alberta to the proverbial “Lake of Fire”.

My guest was there in Red Deer and helped parents and United Conservative party members draft that popular slate of profoundly pro-family policies and she's got a lot to say about the fake news floating around about the policy convention.

Joining me tonight from Calgary is the Executive Director of Parents for Choice in Education, Donna Trimble. She’s going to tell us what really happened and what this victory for parents really means.

“Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.”
Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 26/3
Any politician or bureaucrat violating this law is guilty of: breach of statute and a breach of trust and should be charged..

I’ll watch it when you answer my question. Do you think it should be mandatory to tell parents that their kids are active in GSAs, even if that places some kids at significant risk? Or are you saying that the schools are not obligated to tell parents this, and that "parental rights: is just thus an empty catchphrase that you don’t really mean?

How do you handle those kids whose wellbeing is endangered by telling the parents? Ignoring it doesn’t make it go away, Liza.

Andrew you still haven’t watched Sheila’s video or visited the Parents for Choice in Education website. May I suggest you stop spewing your subterfuge and spin like a broken record until you do. It makes you look foolish.

Awesome letter to the editor Ron Voss. It sounds like the overwhelmingly united voice of Alberta’s parents at the UCP’s convention was heard loud and clear. Shame on McIver, good on Kenney.

Andrew why is it fine for the government to withhold information but evil if they do not? Sorry but just because you think a small minority is more important than everyone else that does not mean that everyone else should suffer or go without. "

Everyone’s being treated equally by this policy.
“And parents have rights , schools are not meant for crap like this and they have no damn right to keep things form parents.”

Youth also have rights, they are not property.

How do you handle the “minority cases” where telling the parents does actually pose a threat to the child’s safety? You’re trivializing them, but that doesn’t make that question go away. Are you really arguing that consequences be damned, we’re telling the parents anyway?

Andrew Stephenson sorry but the society does not need to bow to whatever minority you fancy and grovel for at the time. The world does not revolve around them. And parents have rights , schools are not meant for crap like this and they have no damn right to keep things form parents. There are of course rar bad parents who would kick out a kid for being gay but that does not outweigh the rights of anyone else or what is best for the vast majority, you are talking about a small number of a small minority , they do not come before everyone else. And sorry but your BS about that being a leading cause is pure hogwash. You once spouted off about the Government looking for the best outcome , yet here you are wanting the opposite for many because a very rare few may get a bad outcome. That is contradictory.

Stop it Andrew. THERE IS NO FORCED OUTING.
Pay up and watch the interview or go to the Parents for Choice Website, and stop with the misinformation.
The mandatory disclosure of any sexually explicit CONTENT or MATERIALS s what must be made available for parents, NOT the sexual proclivities of the child. "

So they don’t tell the parents that Johnny’s joined a gay-straight alliance?

Regarding age of consent don’t get me started, but remember that a parent is the legal guardian of, and responsible for their child’s welfare until the age of 18 in this country."

The law also provides for the “child” to have significant and increasing autonomy prior to the age of majority. A 16 year old is given adult level privileges in many ways, including those revolving around sex.

“I agree with this statement that it could be difficult for a child who’s parents are abusive, but that would not be most cases. A good relationship with your child is most important of course. "

Most is not all (what of those that fall into that gap?), and LGBT homelessness is a very real problem. This is again the gap between idealism and reality. Reality is that some parents will be hostile to it.

Wow Andrew, still at it I see. Your posts on this subject are an example of a person who is ill informed and enjoys spreading misinformation.

Go away.

Why do socialists just want to involve themselves and control everyone else’s lives?
They endeavour to impose the rules for everyone else to follow. While not respecting the same laws they themselves have imposed. They love for the governmental system to baby sit them from cradle to grave.
This whole GSA thing is trying to orchestrate a solution to a problem that does not exist. It’s based almost solely on hyperbole.

Take for example; Andrew’s comment. Do you know that gay teens being kicked out of their houses by unsupportive parents are a leading cause of youth homelessness? How do you address that ? "Telling the parents’ actually makes it worse. (Where is the study to back up that statement? And are the teens actually attending schools where the GSA’s would have made the difference?)

Hyperbole.

Maybe society would be best served by adhering to Matt 7:12. But then again most socialists prefer a society based on Godlessness and in turn are endeavouring to impose that on others as well.

“– if kids and parents have a positive relationship they can handle it without the government’s help, and if they don’t, it would be harmful.” Although a difficult and maybe uncomfortable topic to broach with your parents, you will find most parents love their children and want the best for them regardless of their orientation. Most parents come around when they are confronted, because THEY LOVE THEIR OFFSPRING. The authorities need to be reminded of this and stop putting wedges between parents and children.

Read the source information Andrew and stop with the Notley political rhetoric.

This isn’t about mandatory ‘outing’ of kid’s, this is about allowing these decisions on a local level, if a kid is at risk in some way”

That’s the problem though, in that these “parental rights” tend towards the elimination of that discretion by forcing the schools to tell the parents. It’s hard to think of a scenario where forrced “outing” is helpful – if kids and parents have a positive relationship they can handle it without the government’s help, and if they don’t, it would be harmful.

In many cases these “kids” are actually above the age of consent. Is it reasonable for parents to be able to restrict access to information about sex, when the “kids” are treated as de-facto independent adults by the law in this regard?
commented 2018-05-24 09:51:51 -0400
This isn’t about mandatory ‘outing’ of kid’s, this is about allowing these decisions on a local level, if a kid is at risk in some way. However it is mandatory if kids are going to be exposed to sexual content in these groups that parents are informed of the content so they can consent to it or opt out. Considering some of the content that doesn’t go far enough, but it is a huge win none the less (if I am understanding correctly).

That was an great interview, well done Alberta and Donna Trimble is amazing! I wish we could clone her. She is an inspiration to everyone to get more involved at a local level. What she has accomplished cannot be over stated.

The msm reported dishonestly because the example on this issue set by Notley dictated it. They have been disingenuous and misleading. Thanks for clarifying Kenney’s comment regarding consent. Thank you Sheila for bringing these issues to us and showing us how we are being deceived so we can make informed opinions on such important issues. There is nothing more important than our children and our rights to do what’s best for them must be respected.

I cannot believe some of the material kids are allowed access to, and surely there is a way to ban pornography and other sexually explicit materials. How is it, that the teachers unions and school boards are not charged with sexual interference with minors? How are group masturbation gatherings or information on how to get on porn sites acceptable to ANY adult genuinely concerned about the well being of children?

Seriously, it sounds like a police matter to me.

They actually do want to out gays. Parents are to be notified if their child joins a GSA club. What about the kids who my not have suuportive parents?

“What about the kids who my not have suuportive parents?

Tom, what about the kids who do have loving and caring supportive parents? "
The kids can tell their loving and supportive parents themselves.

What about those who don’t have supportive parents? You didn’t answer the question.

Seems, the only difference between the NDP socialist view of public education and past Residential schools is, they permit your child to return home in the afternoon for dinner and a sleep over at their parents home.

There are a great many teachers whose own children attend the same school in which they teach. Next thing they’ll be told they can’t teach at the school for fear of coming to learn their own child is attending a GSA.

Tom Bradly, “what If” is a phrase the government uses on a lazy population to gain ground on their nanny state. There is NO way giving parental rights to the government is a good idea, EVER, on ANY level or for ANY ‘what if’ made up scenario.

There is no way the government should be getting away with any of it. Parental rights are intrinsic, not government given, and must be respected.

Don’t let the government get this foot hold.

Jerry Raketti, ‘a slippery slope’ is right!

The media party has gone full leftist propaganda. People aren’t as stupid as they believe. They’re undermining their own credibility. The NDP is done. The only thing they can do now is to try to undermine & smear the UCP.
