Sheila Gunn Reid on Rebel Media’s fight to keep journalists from being under government’s thumb

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

On Friday’s episode of The Ezra Levant Show, Sheila Gunn Reid joined me to discuss the Alberta government’s latest effort to kill The Rebel Media in order to stifle our journalism in time for the provincial election.

This isn’t the first time we’ve had to fight the Notley government’s attacks on our independent reporting, but it will be interesting to see if any of our competitors will stand with us on the principle that’s at stake.

Even if they don’t like or agree with our coverage, how do they feel about the government fining media companies without even inviting them to the trial?

Rebel may be the target in this case but this is really a fight to separate journalists from being under the thumb of the government.

Watch as Sheila explains why we have to take on this fight and win.

P.S. If you agree that this is a fight worth fighting, please visit StandWithTheRebel.com to find out how you can help.

How much more proof do we need before we admit that Notley is a communist? Only communists/dictators have a policy of silencing those who criticize them. These bandits cannot tolerate anybody speaking negatively about them even though it’s true. Today they silence the media, tomorrow they put individuals into prison for speaking their minds. After that there comes a bullet to the head! This is a historical fact and it ALWAYS begins with destroying the free press.

William why should this not be thrown out of court since the Commissioner broke his own rules? One law for the elites and one for the plebeians?
commented 2019-01-21 10:36:02 -0500
William, this was not a donation. To whom was it donated? It was a news item and commentary. Only the medium was unusual. Why is it OK to do the same thing on the internet or in a newspaper or on TV but verboten on a billboard?

Does not the CBC do the same thing with their comedy sketches which are 99% political commentary?

My advice for Ezra and co. is: limit the legal action to an admin review of the size of the fine. Try to buck it down to $1,000 or so; and then pay it. A case can be made that The Rebel is being fined much more than other violators. Their enemies would love to see The Rebel throw good money after bad on a weak case.
There is a fairly clear violation here of the letter of the law. These laws are fairly uniform. There is nothing undemocratic per se about making political donations transparent. The billboard crossed the line. Cut your losses and move on.

First Polar Vortex of 2019 touted as evidence of global warming. It’s not.
https://dailycaller.com/2019/01/20/polar-vortex-not-global-warming/
The catastrophic warming predicted by climate alarmists has not happened and it is not causing the extreme weather they say it is. Their “settled” science is fake pure and simple.

Oh!… And you do know about the 11.2 year solar cycle I hope? Or the fact that the Thames froze over during the Maunder Minimum??

To the Ms. Stephensons and the Nicholas Conklins of the world…. Shove it up your dimpled bums tonight as all of the Midwest, and Eastern Canada and the Maritimes shiver under record cold and snow conditions…. Or better yet, get your delicate posteriors and snow shovels out to go help them dig out… I have friends in both Ontario and Nova Scotia and they don’t find anything “amusing” or “academic” about your B.S. prognostications… And its only the start of the current 11.2 year solar minimum…

Back to Alberta fining The Rebel for spending more money than the Act allows.
1. I believe Ezra would ask his Lawyers if the Billboard was legal before putting it up.
I think most people would.

2.(charge) The Rebel as a company spent more than they were allowed on this election cycle.
Where The Rebel would get off this charge is, The Rebel was simply gathering the money of 300 separate people and sending it in, or spending it as requested by the 300 people. “INNOCENT

WarmER does not mean warm. And, yes, some areas do get more snow when it gets warmer out, due to the higher moisture capacity of air closer to freezing.
________________________________________________________________________________
And yet here is Manitoba we have had a warmer than usual winter and less snow. But the way you worded it its win-win for you. You out in the word “sometimes” so the argument becomes meaningless.

The ice here in Southern Manitoba used to be a mile thick. Now it’s gone. Where did it go? Did the mastodons cause it to disappear by driving their SUVs? Was that ice normal or is the situation now normal? Or was it normal when palm trees grew on Vancouver island and in the far north? Was it normal when trees grew where glaciers now stand?

Greenland was once actually ice free hence the name Greenland. Was that normal or is it normal now? Will you admit you have no idea? Apart form the true ice ages (which may be normal) life has always gone on. Long before mastodons had SUVs to drive.

If you are an evolutionist what difference does it make? We are, after all, “just dust in the wind,” right? We are just a chance creation of the cosmos with no significance, right? If we kill ourselves and the planet off who cares? We just weren’t strongest or smartest, right? The next stage evolution may do better, right?

Better luck next time.

William Kay,

It is good to see someone here that is at least acknowledging that The Rebel may have screwed up and will end up paying for it – instead of the usual sheep here that automatically assume that Ezra did nothing wrong and that this is the work of the liberal bogeyman.
________________________________________________________________________________
Not to be confused with the contrarian sheeple of the left who draw up all manner of offences against those they disagree with. Like impeaching Trump because we don’t like him as a person. We can’t find anything to charge him with but let’s all repeat the mantra anyway. Still waiting for the smoking gun of Russian collusion ( and the hammer falling).

The link below should take you to the Election Finances and Contribution Disclosure Act. Scroll down to Section 44.1 (1) (g) – subsections (i) and (ii)
http://www.qp.alberta.ca/documents/acts/e02.pdf

Thanks for the link, William. I took a quick look through the Act (there is lifetime of reading in there). What I see is that the Act makes provision for exemptions if the action is “commentary” (undefined as far as I could see) or “News” (also not defined that I could see).

The billboard contains both commentary and news. They provide the news that “40% of Alberta students failed provincial exams.” They provided the commentary that “Alberta can do better”. The choice of media is, perhaps, a bit unconventional but it definitely contains material exempted under the act. I also see that it is a breach of the act to make an adverse ruling but not notify someone being charged of that fact:

(3) The Election Commissioner shall not make any adverse finding against a person or organization unless that person or organization has had reasonable notice of the substance of the allegations and a reasonable opportunity to present his or her or its views.

Perhaps the commissioner needs to be charged under his/her own act.

I don’t see how anyone in Alberta could utter a political statement without first hiring a team of lawyers to ascertain whether said segment would contravene these draconian laws. Hope I don’t get fined for this opinion.

Nicholas Conklin they had no due process you ignorant lemming. You do not deserve freedom in any way. You are too stupid to see where this is going and even more ignorant to think it will not affect you ever. You ignore history like a good sheep. Enjoy life on your knees.

Freedom of speech (including a free press) and democracy should be defended at all cost, without them there can be no rights or freedom.
I use to live in a free Province in a free Country. I am starting to wonder if that is true any more.

NICHOLAS CONKLIN, said “Um, climate change doesn’t mean that snow, cold and winter will no longer exist in Canada.”
________________________________________
Nicholas, you and your climate change team can’t have it both ways. "

A 5 degree warming for most of Canada is still well below freezing, except in Vancouver, and these days Toronto (which, sometime in the last decade, stopped routinely having snow on the ground in winter – think about the implications of a bit of cold weather in January being newsworthy now). WarmER does not mean warm. And, yes, some areas do get more snow when it gets warmer out, due to the higher moisture capacity of air closer to freezing.

The climate is changing. That’s not really up for debate. Some regions see more warming, some see less, some see none, some see cooling. It’s an average, and on average, its’ getting warmer, despite the lack of obvious natural phenomena to explain it. If you doubt it, go check out the glaciers in Alberta on Google Earth – they’ve receded noticeably in just 30 years. What may be for debate, is the degree to which human activity is responsible, although there’s not a lot of evidence for the warming being purely a natural phenomenon.

The legal issue turns on the “Fire Eggen” billboard ad. The legislation’s definition of “political advertising” exempts all manner of journalism etc. It does not exempt billboards. "

You’d think they would have learned their lesson after the HarperPAC blew up in their faces, and alongside their occasional complaints about Working Families and other third-party political advertisers. Frankly, I don’t see how banning third party ads is a bad thing.

You mock us climate deniers for pointing out these cold days when the Planet is supposed to be warming. OK I agree, you can’t go by a few days in winter.
Then this summer in Toronto, there will be an extra hot week and CBC, Climate Barbie, 20 Gov’t Scientists, 30 useless University Professor Scientists and finally the FAKE NEWS NORTH CTV will all insist that the unbearable heat is all a result of Climate Change.
Sorry, no TRUSTWORTHINESS for your above friends. They are frauds.

@Robert McClelland

We could use some of that global warming in Canada right now!

What we don’t need is Jihadi Justin’s JIZYA TAX to fund his UN pact mass migration of Islamics.

Send Trudeau to Saudi. He can live and pray there 5 times a day.

Robert McClelland,

Um, climate change doesn’t mean that snow, cold and winter will no longer exist in Canada even though the winters today are nothing compared to winters in Canada in the 80’s for example.

Knowledge is a good thing. Being anti-science and proudly ignorant isn’t a good thing.
