SHOCKING: Here’s why Canada’s largest water bomber wasn’t “available” to fight wildfire in Fort Mac

The Martin Mars is Canada’s largest water bomber. It’s staged at Sproat Lake BC, a short flight away from Fort McMurray and could have been used in the fight against the massive wildfire nicknamed “The Beast” by Fort Mac fire chief Darby Allen. But it wasn’t.

The bomber wasn't there because the company that owns it wasn't asked by Alberta government officials to make it available to fight fires in Alberta.

In response to a deluge of questions from concerned people wondering why the company hasn't sent their massive water bomber to help, Coulson Flying Tankers released this statement:

“Firstly, if there was a request by the Alberta Government to contract the Martin Mars, we would do everything in our power to support the request. In fact, we have offered one of our C-130's that could be made available immediately, to the Alberta Government however they currently do not see a need for it at the moment. We have our crews for it on standby, regardless. Next to the Mars at 7200 US gallons, our C-130's are the largest propeller driven air tankers in the world with a 4400 US gallon capacity. Secondly, in the firefighting business it is the government that has operational control of the aircraft. No aircraft operator in the world can simply go and put out a fire, even if they wanted to and if someone ever did, they would be facing serious criminal charges. The Mars is currently going through it’s yearly inspection. Based on the fact no government has any interest whatsoever in the aircraft fighting fire, we have decided to take the Mars to the Oshkosh Air Show in late July in hopes of finding another business or home for it, keeping it somewhat operational.”

So the bomber was ready and available for the Alberta government to hire to fight the fire. But it wasn’t contracted.

Premier Notley said that “every single resource that is needed to fight that fire will be dedicated no holds barred.” Sure. Except contracting the Martin Mars when it was available and the C130 bomber and flight crew that Coulson Flying Tankers is offering. The government hasn’t taken them up on their offer of help because they do not see the need.

If there’s no need for extra tankers in Fort Mac, when will there ever be a need? It’s important to note that later on that day, after that exchange, after being accused by the Premier of fear mongering, Brian Jean's own house burned down in the fire at Fort Mac.

But it gets even worse as I show how we know the Premier isn't telling the truth. We know from what the Coulson Flying Tankers said. Notley flat out lied. She lied to the face of a man trying to save his community. There aren't as many water bombers on contract this year as last. And Notley certainly isn’t using “that and more” as she says to fight the fires.

In fact, now we know she hasn’t taken Coulson Flying Tankers up on their offer of the C-130 and even if the government tried to hire the Martin Mars, they can’t. Not anymore because the government didn't heed the warnings that this would be an early and fierce wildfire season and contract with the appropriate amount of tankers. It’s too late. They're gone and working somewhere else. The bomber companies are now left doing what they can to pay the bills, whether that’s going to an airshow in Wisconsin or taking contracts in the states to fight fires. They’re just trying to make sure they still have a company to operate next year to fight fires. Who can blame them? I don’t.

I’m a small c conservative. There aren’t a lot of things I think government should do. But wildfire management is one of them. Keeping fires from burning your house down seems like one of those public safety things we could be okay expecting government to do for us.

Last year the province spent $500 million on wildfires, when only $200 million was budgeted. The department is consistently underfunded. Notley underfunded it again, so badly that tankers are going elsewhere.

In all the government spending Alberta does, the highest per capita in the country, the place Rachel Notley saw fit to cut was wildfire management. She didn’t make a single cut to bureaucracy in health and government. Not a penny in inefficiency could be found there.

The only places she could cut?

Agriculture and the safety of Alberta’s forest communities.

more proof of deep incompetence in her and all her flunkees. the most incompetent government in Alberta’s history coupled with ignorant ideology.

Peter netterville, I thank you for your cruel comments – “apparently, you are f ING thick”. Was this comment absolutely necessary?

PETER NETTERVILLE

The Halifax Explosion and subsequent wildfire and tidal wave destroyed over 13,000 buildings.

By comparison, Ft. McMurray is tiny and easily dealt with, provided Notley and the bureaucracy are serious about effectively dealing with this matter, which they are not.

This is an ideal opportunity to wreck the Oilsands with delays and assessments. The projects will be messed for the entire summer, if not completely shut down.

On the other hand, given how much money the governments have given Bombardier, we should probably ask them to build a new plane that can also lake scoop instead of having to land and fill.

The Martin Mars is an awesome piece of history; it is not an awesome water bomber that can put out 1200 hectare fires on its own. Back in 1948 when the last one was built is was the best piece of tech out there; now for the operating cost of on Mars you can fly almost 10 newer, more agile water bombers that can more strategically deliver fire retardant and actually hit their targets. There are 9 Provinces and territories with major fires right now as well as a ton of US states; there is a reason none of them have chosen to pay for the Mars. It is far too expensive and risky to use for what it can actually do.

ROY JEANINE

Apparently, you are fucking thick.

The province has lost revenue from 1 million bbl/day of production. That means the province will effectively receive no royalty income from its largest producers. Notley has already overplayed and overstated the conditions at Ft. McMurray. The losses are not that great. Save for 1,600 buildings, over 85% of the community is intact and can recover inside of two weeks. Full recovery within one month. However, Notley is applying a Chernobyl narrative, saying that the area with be closed off for over one month. Hiding behind nebulous bureaucratic processes and safety conditions, Notley is imposing bizarre reasons for delays of one kind or another. I predict that everything will be shuttered for one month, with full operational recover slowly occurring over the whole summer. Notley’s delays and boondoggles will be discovered soon enough. The NDP caucus will turn on her before long, as individual MLAs’ own fledgling political careers begin to diminish. Moreover, capital markets will severely downgrade Alberta’s debt below investment grade, prompting a massive sell-off.

Like Alison Redford before her, Notley will be driven from office by September.

Peter Netterville – 2,400 homes and businesses were destroyed.

Awww frik, what the hell did you expect. The DIPs don’t even know what a water tanker is or what to do with it, or what a cow looks like or how their steak gets into the vac-u-pack at the Safeway – if it isn’t mentioned in the little red book they are blank on it. It’s all about pimping leftist dogmatism, not serving the electorate and running the province.

This is all they know right here:

I DIETER – I don’t see how you can say she will be out of office by fall if the oilsands are shuttered for 1 month – how are we ever going to get her out. She is untouchable. With all her evil mismanagement and total incompetence, Albertans will not say boo. Maybe us here but the majority will sit back and take this garbage and lies from her and DO NOTHING. WE ARE THE MOST PASSIVE IDIOTS EVER. SHE HAS DESTROYED INVESTMENT 35 BILLION AND RISING, NO PROTESTS THERE, HUGE DIESEL TAX ON TRANSPORTATION, NO PROTESTS THERE, COAL PLANTS BEING SET TO CLOSE, NO PROTESTS THERE, AND so ON. THE FARMERS AND RANCHERS WERE THE ONLY ONES WHO HAD THE GUTS AND BRAINS TO PROTEST AND I GIVE THEM ALL THE CREDIT IN THE WORLD. EVERYONE IN DEADMONTON AND TOWNS SHOULD HAVE JOINED THE FARMERS AND RANCHERS BUT THEY DID NOT. SO NUTLEY CHAVEZ WILL CONTINUE TO STEAL, LIE, AND LAUGH AT US AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO TAKE IT. THIS IS HOW STUPID WE ARE TO LET HER GET AWAY WITH DESTROYING FORT MCMURRAY AND THIS BEAUTIFUL PROVINCE.

We could just take out 15% of Edmonton, say, all of downtown, starting with the Legislature, it would burn fast considering the amount of fertilizer contained within.

Deiter Cunth said, " Now, even the CBC has to admit (all other news organizations have also said) that the damage was minimal – only 15%. "

They phrase it that way to fool people like you who think “15% isn’t too bad”. I see it worked.

15% still calculates to about 1600 buildings.

What fire in the last 100 years in Canada has destroyed more buildings?
commented 2016-05-10 10:05:29 -0400
“Damage was minimal -only 15%”
Well then, how would they feel about applying that to Edmonton area. You could wipe out all of Millwoods, or Sherwood Park, St. Albert maybe, or Ft. Sask, each may constitute about the same percentage.
commented 2016-05-10 08:49:12 -0400
Notley’s narrative is getting harder to maintain.

First, Ft. McMurray was devastated. Now, even the CBC has to admit (all other news organizations have also said) that the damage was minimal – only 15%.

Second, the area will be uninhabitable for months. Well, no. Apart from utilities, though shut off, are largely intact. The area can get up and go soon.

Third, a lengthy assessment is required. Well, no. Apart from those areas heavily damaged, everything else can get up and going again, soon.

Now, the discovery that firefighting resources were not requested.

The plot thickens.

Notley is delaying, stalling, and making excuses to keep the Oilsands shuttered.

Along with the suspicion that the wildfires may have been deliberately set, managing this false flag incident is proving to be harder than thought.

But for every excuse Notley makes, she digs her grave that much deeper. If she somehow manages to keep the Oilsands shuttered for a month or more, she will be out of office by the fall. I foresee wholesale resignations in the NDP caucus as the pressure breaks a number of their members.

This is the beginning of the end.

1) Oil Company Incomes
2) Oil Company taxies ACTUALLY paid
3) Oil Company money donated to Evacuees
why can’t people just look at simple information?

Someone said this: "80, 000 people were asked to leave their homes, and they did so safely, with flames even licking the sky nearby. That is an accomplishment that is rarely done in human history. More often such a disaster brings on huge suffering and death. "

Really?…but in this case there wasn’t huge suffering and death?

I guess a whole city of people losing it’s homes and buildings, all family heirlooms, records, historical records, photos, memories wiped out etc. isn’t huge suffering? And no death? You must mean no human recorded death…all the wildlife that was sacrificed because there was no advised firewall (dead zone) around the city, highways lined with fuel (trees) for the fire, to encourage it spreading, no appropriate protection against the fire spreading into town, and a distinct and increasingly evident lack of planning, and negligent mismanagement is what you call a successful accomplishment? And the miles of trees and their inhabitants that were sacrificed because we had to have a GLUT of deliberately planted trees upon trees in an area already glutted with tree fuel, creating a conflagration that has left a new monstrously huge dead zone that could have been prevented by a pre-planned small dead zone. This is perhaps what the new Canadian boast is, I suppose, but it would have had former Canadians hanging their heads in shame before the age of unionized debauchery and ignorance came in.

That is the most shocking thing I have read in a long time!! This should be all over every newspaper in the country. This woman wilfully put the lives of Canadians at risk and did not do EVERYTHING in her power to save their community. She MUST resign, the people need to stand up and throw her out on her ear. These poor people have lost everything and long after this story has faded from the news, they will still be suffering the loss of everything they owned. She can’t get away with this.

Jay Kelly. Did you even watch the article? The provincial government cut the budget and cancelled some of the water bomber contracts. This was a bad decision at the best of times. This is an El Nino year and the fire risk was much higher. Notley was slow responding to the fire as evidence by her exchange with Brian Jean which resulted in his own house burning down along with many others only a few hours later that same day. Notley was slow declaring an emergency and slow requesting help from the federal government. The federal government gave what assistance exactly? I don’t see any and Ralph Goodale stated that this beast of a fire was so huge that trying to fight it was a waste of resources and that it required rain to put the fire out. This is our Public Safety Minister who I used to respect. Goodale is just another idiot in the Trudeau mould, an empty suit spouting gibberish.
The fire fighters were doing their job to the point of exhaustion and only then did Notley announce reinforcements and this help should have been in position sooner. Once again Notley was slow to react. The RCMP do not actually fight the fire. They have a different function Jay as police are not qualified to perform fire fighting duties. Of course you know that and this was just a test to see if I was paying attention.
Your comments as usual are close to 100% bullshit. Same old Jay Kelly crap. Did you take a bad hit to the head when you were a kid or are you just naturally fucking stupid?

NDP S. says that Barry Feland is “trying to stir up a little fun”. Really? By pointing out that the plane that The Rebel is highlighting in this article is in fact not fit to fly?

Albertan firefighters, water bombers from the Province and Federal government local police and RCMP have all contributed to do the best they can with this fire.

Rather than criticize them, I praise them.

I just saw a report on Global about Notely and the “selected” reporters that had a tour of Fort Mac. Everyone that entered the area, including their MP, were required by the authorities to sign a non-disclosure agreement. All pictures had to be reviewed before publication, and fire fighters declined being interviewed, there seems to be a gag order in place. So which authorities are responsible for this, was it Notely, Trudeau, or the RCMP, and what is the reason for it? We know that it was Notely who would have decided only to include selected media, we know from her past actions, it seems that she likes to control media access.
Does anybody know what big secret they’re hiding from the public, I can’t for the life of me figure out why there would be a gag order.

All of Notley’s frantic bluster and posturing can’t change the fact that she incomprehensibly slashed Alberta’s firefighting budget by 80% shortly before this catastrophic fire. It can’t change the fact that she is demonstrably incompetent and unqualified to be in charge of the safety of Albertans as Premier of Alberta. Every resource possible, including the Martin Mars water bomber, should have been retained for firefighting this year because of the temperate winter and early spring. Why did Notley slash the firefighting budget by a whopping 80% instead? She has a lot of explaining to do on this file, which she has handled incompetently, with disastrous human and economic consequences for the residents of Fort MacMurray, for Alberta, and for Canada.

This fire should have been nipped in the bud before it could spread, because it was close to Fort MacMurray and directly upwind of that city. Why wasn’t it immediately fought with every resource possible before it got out of control? Notley has shown she cannot be trusted to safeguard the lives and property of Albertans. She should resign and call an election, so a competent government can begin the difficult task of mopping up the tragic consequences of her incompetence. NOTLEY: RESIGN NOW!!!

Bullsquat. It is UNFIT TO FLY.
The 70 year old plane is in for repair and recertification. The other plane they offered (at exorberant price) was refused because they did not have the experianced crews and logistics needed to keep it flying more than a few days.
CONS are just trying to create contoversy since Conservatives have not done anything to help they would rather hurt Fort McMurray people than admit Rachel Notley did a terrific job.

Nothing these ideological socialists do and say comes across as “shocking” any more. Notley should be charged with criminal negligence! Forget the inane comments by those who Lenin called “useful idiots”, small-fry idiots who are helpful in advancing the socialist cause to achieve the socialist utopia (which historically time and again ends up as dystopia), but they will be dealt with in the end after having served their usefulness, because they can’t be trusted.

Now…..every Canadian needs to step forward and demand Notley resign due to incompetence. This is a Canadian disaster as well as an Albertan disaster.

Canadians need to speak.
