Spending watchdog spending big for trips to yacht club and more

Brian LilleyArchive

The federal spending watchdog may be in violation of the very spending rules he is ensures other government departments are following.

A CTV News report says the office of Auditor General Michael Ferguson has been taking employees of fun trips at your expense.

Over four years, the federal watchdog doled out more than $23,048 on team-building trips in the Ottawa area.

This includes three visits to Funhaven, an entertainment centre, and other team-building events at Saunders Farm, Britannia Yacht Club, Rideau Curling Centre and Lafleche Adventure Park.

Ferguson defended the trips and the spending to CTV Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife.

"Half of the day is all about business and the other half is ways for them to connect with their team," Ferguson said. "We are very careful to make sure we select locations that offer us good prices," he added.

As presented, this appears to be abusive what with sound bites, fragments and missing parts but hey, gotta’ fill the airwaves with some kinda’ frivolity. Has anyone with an I.Q. that exceeds their shoes size, actually crunched ALL of the numbers correctly? What is the actual cost per unit for team building. enhancing comfort zones and comradery not to mention Value Added’ components. Before the knee-jerk geniuses start to spout off, they should take a wee breath. Just saying.

Yes , I think you are or were on your way to bargaining the Tax payer right out of funds!
It’s always easy to find a good deal when you are spending other people’s money!

“I’m entitled to my entitlements” still prevails on the Hill. Bureaucrats will always fight to maintain the system. A fish starts to rot at the head. To slow down the rot you cut off the head.
The best and only way to put an end to this slurping at the public trough is by dismissing people for breach of trust and cancelling their entitlement to a lifelong pension. Everything else is really non-consequential since the “punishment” would only be short term.
Think back to Ad-scam and what the Ministers and Bureaucrats were trying to protect… that’s right, their pensions! The pensions could be worth millions of dollars over a 20 year period.

team building trips = bag off of work time. If they want to bond, then meet after work, like most people in regular jobs!

$5,000 and change per year. Depending on how many were in the team and how many team-building events per year, it may be reasonable. The optics are bad, though. Why can’t they team-build at Millhaven?
