I suppose it was just a matter of time and now, it’s here -- progressives reloaded their politically-correct bazookas to obliterate another fun day: Valentine’s Day.
The assault on poor Cupid began a few years ago when a forward-thinking school principal in Massachusetts decided to “re-brand” Saint Valentine’s Day as “Caring and Kindness Day.”
At least the kids were still going to celebrate something, regardless of the moniker.
Not so at Bruce Vento Elementary School in St. Paul, Minnesota where Principal Scott Masini has just kissed Valentine’s Day goodbye forever -- for not being “inclusive” enough.
Mason himself is “inclusive” though. He included ALL holidays in his parental notification letter saying the school would no longer “tolerate” Halloween, Christmas, or Thanksgiving either referring to them as “dominant” holidays that may suppress someone else’s view, whatever that means.
So, no cards or treats shall be allowed into the school on Valentine’s Day.
Isn’t it perversely ironic that progressives, so obsessed with tolerance are often the most intolerant people of all? But I digress.
What’s the strategy here? A news story notes the school’s student body is “overwhelmingly non-white”. Despite a diverse student body, there’s no evidence that any parents were clamouring for a holiday prohibition. In fact, judging by parent comments on social media, the vast majority are upset with this P.C. version of the St. Valentine’s Day massacre.
Even Masini acknowledges that his holiday policy won’t be popular so if there’s no popular support for such a harebrained idea, why implement it?
The progressive principal remains unrepentant: “One of the concerns that I have,” Masini said, “is whether or not [Valentine’s Day] is encroaching on the educational opportunities of others and threatening the culture of tolerance and respect for all.”
Translation? If somebody, somewhere might hypothetically have a problem with Valentine’s Day, better to play it safe and call the whole damn thing off. Brilliant.
Principal Masini has devised a “fix” for a problem that doesn’t exist. And this guy is in charge of an elementary school?
Sorry, kids. Looks like February the 14th is now less about Cupid, and more about Stupid.
