Sturgeon Refinery fix: UCP MLA wants Alberta taxpayers off the hook for costly boondoggle

Holly NicholasRebel Commentator

Spending on the Sturgeon Refinery project, a partnership between the Alberta government, Canadian Natural Resources and North West Upgrading, have gone completely off the rails.

About $3 billion has been tacked on to the original $6.5B price tag, along with another estimated $26 million in toll fees .

All of this will rest on the shoulders of taxpayers.

Drew Barnes, the United Conservative MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat has been working on this file so I spoke with him about the refinery and what Albertans need to know about it.

Watch as Barnes offers his solution to this mess!

The Notley NDP try to sell this project as a step toward diversifying Alberta’s economy and sell themselves as pro-oil but the fact is, they could have stopped this boondoggle. Instead they just placed all of the risk on Albertans.

The profits are going to be razor thin, with 30 year estimates suggesting they may be between $200 and $700 million.

The NDP campaigned on refining more oil in Alberta, so we can expect more waste on such projects at the expense of taxpayers.

In no way am I attacking Holly. As a matter of a fact, she is my favorite rebel personality. I just observed that she loves to say boondoggle.

I think we should dig a bit into, subsidies, labour contract’s, investor’s for the project. Then who benefit’s after it is built? Some offshoot union contractor to do perpetual maintenance, with a caveat of govt’ money to sustain it. Most " companies the government " are involved in lose money and need to be subsidized to survive. Maybe SNAFU is a better acronym of this fiasco? You know CNRL and North west would never enter into an agreement unless profit was guaranteed.

Boondoggle, is quite descriptive, and we all know what it means without having profanity enter the picture!

Space Moose, who cares? I am sure you have things you say all the time. It is a small and petty person that picks on something like that.
