Scores of scorched bodies and corpses with bullet wounds reportedly littered the streets of Dalori village in northeastern Nigeria on Saturday night following an intense firebomb attack by the fanatical Islamic terrorist group known as Boko Haram — news agencies have said 86 people, including children, were killed.
A survivor who hid in a tree during the attack said he watched as Boko Haram fighters firebombed huts with people inside and heard the screams of children burning to death, the Associated Press reports.
According to various news outlets, Colonel Mustapha Anka, a spokesperson for the Nigerian army, said: “[the assailants arrived] in two cars and on motorcycles, they opened fire then set light to homes.” Three female suicide bombers who had at first attempted to blend in with the villagers “were intercepted, then blew themselves up.”
The violence sweeping the village, which is located just 5 kilometres from Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and the largest city in Nigeria’s northeastern region, reportedly continued for nearly four hours until army reinforcements arrived with heavier weapons.
The European Union, which claims to maintain its commitment to supporting African states in the fight against the menace posed by regional Islamist groupings, quickly issued a loose condemnation of the attack.
The rather sterile statement from the EU, published by the MailOnline, reads: “The EU remains committed to providing a comprehensive range of political, development and humanitarian support to Nigeria and the region in tackling this threat and in ensuring the sound development of the region.”
Founded in 2002, Boko Haram, which has created havoc in Africa's most populous country, believes in a radical form of Islam which makes it "haram", or against Islamic law, for Muslims to participate in any political or social activity associated with the Western world. Voting in elections, wearing shirts and pants or receiving a secular education are strictly forbidden, according to the BBC.
The group has pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State.
