Cruz’s mother, Eleanor Darragh, was a US citizen from Delaware. His father, Rafael Cruz, was a Cuban national who had received a green card while living in the US (he eventually became a US citizen in 2005). Under American law, Cruz would be born an American despite having only one US citizen parent as long as that parent — his mother — had physically lived in the United States for at least 10 years and five of those years had been after her 14th birthday. Cruz’s mother easily cleared that bar, so Cruz’s citizenship is not debatable.

There used to be a law on the books defining a “natural-born citizen.” The Naturalization Act of 1790 specified that “children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond the sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural-born citizens.”

That’s pretty cut-and-dried — and it obviously includes Ted Cruz. Furthermore, the fact that the law was passed so soon after the Constitution was written, by many of the men who had written the Constitution, indicates it’s pretty close to the “founders’ intent” of what “natural-born citizen” was. One problem: Congress repealed the 1790 Act in 1795, and replaced it with another law that specified that people in Cruz’s situation would be “citizens” — but not whether they’d be “natural-born citizens.”

Maybe he was really born in Hawaii

I completely missed the point of this video.

Kenneth, Cruz’s father was a Cuban… to be eligible BOTH parents must be U.S. citizens at the time of the candidates birth. The requirements were set-up this way by the founders of the U.S. constitution to ensure that the presidents allegiance to the U.S. was not thwarted by one of the parents ancestry. He is NOT eligible.

The video was a total waste of time. So much so that it kinda pissed me off. Really, more than a minute of that? Should’ve come up with a better premise to talk about Cruz.

And yes, ‘eleigible’ was a typo.

Cruz is eleigible to be POTUS. Even though he was born in Canada, he was born a US national, because his mother was a US citizen.

And we have now entered the twilight zone!

The whole debate about natural born citizen was changed when the democrats wanted to elect Obama, who the knew at the time was NOT ELIGIBLE for POTUS. The political system in the U.S. is a farce. The americans have trampled on and destroyed their constitution by violating it without consequence. Obama is an expert at shitting on america.

Cruz’s mother was born in the United States. But Cruz himself was born in Canada. How much does that affect his run for the President?

Ted Cruz announces he will be a candidate for the office of President Of The United States. He’s a nice guy, Canadian born but HE IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO HOLD THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES BECAUSE HE IS NOT A NATURAL BORN CITIZEN AS REQUIRED BY THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. Have any americans read their own constitution ? This is just ridiculous that you would let a foreign born person run for election to that office when it is clearly forbidden by their highest law of the land. Where are all the constitutional experts, constitutional lawyers, congressmen and women, senators and judges, who should be voicing this matter to the public at large to stop this. I’m not even an american, just a friendly neighbour to the north, but even I know what their constiution and bill of rights says. Are all americans this frikkin stunned ???

Done entirely, unlike ‘stupid’, the current occupant of the White House, without the aid of a teleprompter

I hope for Ted Cruz. I promise I’ll stop being so angry
