The Philippines have taken to our Jessica Swietoniowski, currently on assignment covering Trudeau's Garbage Ship in Manila. Filipino foreign secretary Teddy Locsin Jr. has found a Twitter friend in The Rebel thanks to our sympathetic coverage of President Duterte's decision to send Canadian garbage back to our shores.
It all began When Locsin responded to a concerned tweet from an account based in Singapore:
We didn't demand that the ship itself be recycled along with the garbage. https://t.co/UCTlgpQc33— Teddy Locsin Jr. (@teddyboylocsin) June 18, 2019
I’m just following my nose👃🗑 https://t.co/B6nIz3YlGA— Jessica Swietoniowski (@JessicaSwiet) June 18, 2019
Maybe we can go one step further and meet in person? Would love the chance to speak with you while I’m here in Manila! https://t.co/mv4oSRduPx— Jessica Swietoniowski (@JessicaSwiet) June 18, 2019
There is nothing more to say. The garbage containers were loaded on the Maersk ship under my department's eyes and it sailed away. I kept media away but assured them they could wave baaaaaaabye as ship slipped beneath the horizon. Full cooperation from the Canadian government. https://t.co/MzO3eSRwcM— Teddy Locsin Jr. (@teddyboylocsin) June 18, 2019
Mr. Secretary, do you have a public comment for any foreign countries still thinking about sending their garbage to the Philippines? What message would you have for them? https://t.co/OGFeAa71LT— Jessica Swietoniowski (@JessicaSwiet) June 18, 2019
Jessica then sent Secretary Loscin a link to her report on the Garbage Ship stopping in South Korea. And he responded:
Thank you for the update. All I could promise my side was the containers on board on a certain date, even then it was late a day. The master of the situation is the captain of the ship; not even a client can substitute his judgment. Maritime tradition. https://t.co/XdxozL6KNj— Teddy Locsin Jr. (@teddyboylocsin) June 18, 2019
Thank you for all your comments. I will bring your warm regards to the many proud Filipino-Canadians. I enjoyed my visit to Manila! Baaaaaaaaa bye for now! https://t.co/ytA52hJ40e— Jessica Swietoniowski (@JessicaSwiet) June 18, 2019
Ezra Levant commented on how Jessica's rapport with foreign leaders is even better than Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland:
I'm enjoying the banter between our Rebel reporter in Manlia, @JessicaSwiet, and the Philippines foreign secretary, @teddyboylocsin. Jessica seems to have a better rapport with foreign leaders than does @cafreeland. Catch up on everything at https://t.co/vpS8TZTV1d https://t.co/DUz9zBZI5B— Ezra Levant 🍁 (@ezralevant) June 18, 2019
You've no idea how glad the Canadian foreign minister, your ambassador and I were to get the vintage garbage off our hands. When Maersk ship sailed off, it was finally out of our hands and in that of Canadian environmental agencies. https://t.co/N2GHup6ysm— Teddy Locsin Jr. (@teddyboylocsin) June 18, 2019
To cap-off the Twitter exchange, Secretary Loscin asked Jessica to discuss matters over dinner!
My posts in Canada want me to visit Ottawa. They will remind me to invite you. Where'd you eat. I hope you had a guide with a good taste for food; shopping's great too. Did you try Boracay? It was a toilet but it's been flushed and brushed. Haven't been there for 35 years now. https://t.co/29SGevr02L— Teddy Locsin Jr. (@teddyboylocsin) June 18, 2019
If the Filippino Secretary of Foreign Affairs is responding to our journalism, then it's clear that we're making a difference. You can keep up with all of Jessica's reports from the Philippines at GarbageShip.com
