A 24-year-old man is now in custody in Tajikistan for allegedly driving his teen wife to kill herself.
Dailywire reports that 18-year-old Rajabbi Khurshed killed herself after her husband, Zafar Pirov, refused to accept the results of multiple virginity tests and demanded a second wife.
Khurshed was forced into the arranged marriage with a man she had never met before. Radio Free Europe reports, “The Tajik state obliged Khurshed to undergo a prenuptial medical exam, which in her case included a virginity test that while technically optional is routinely demanded of young women by either or both families.”
The girl's mother, Fazila Mirzoeva, said her daughter was a victim of “slander and violence”. The teen never had an intimate relationship and had a doctor's certificate to prove she was a virgin.
Pirov defended himself, insisting that his wife was not a virgin on their wedding night, no matter what documents said.
Only 40 days after the wedding, Khurshed dropped out of school to help her parents look after two disabled brothers. But because of enormous pressure from her husband, she drank what Tajik authorities say was a fatal dose of vinegar.
Her family says the girl “couldn't take it any longer”.
Pirov could face up to eight years in prison.
