While on the ground in northern Iraqi Kurdistan, I visited an IDP camp for Christians and Yazidis who had been forced out of their homes following Daesh's mad march across the Middle East.
At Dawudiya Camp, I noticed logos and branding from various international organizations and NGOs who contributed to the religious minorities there, as well as country flags from the US, Poland, and even Japan who provided aid to the relief effort on the ground.
After a long search up and down the rows of caravans at the camp, I finally came across a Canadian flag outside the maternal health centre!
However, my initial hope in seeing Canada's national flag at the camp was instantly deflated the moment I spoke to officials at the centre.
They told me the money they received from Canada had been delivered under former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, a champion of maternal health on the international stage.
But since the election of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, much-needed monies for maternal health has been cut off by the Canadian government.
And that's strange... Because Prime Minister Trudeau seems to fancy himself a "maternal health" advocate.
Just this week the Canadian government pledged $241.5M in new aid packages through the Clinton Foundation and Planned Parenthood to developing countries including in the Middle East and North Africa.
But, unlike Harper who ensured our tax dollars were going to actually keeping women and babies healthy, Trudeau is committing our cash to providing abortions and birth control.
No abortions at a Kurdish camp for religious minorities? No Canadian cash.
