Richmond Hill city council voted against singing "O Canada," but then one councillor did something no one expected

David MenziesMission Specialist

I returned to Richmond Hill city council to follow up on last week's story. As you may recall, the council's lawyers advised them not to sing "O Canada" at their meetings because the word "God" in the lyrics might violate a recent Supreme Court decision, banning prayer from such municipal meetings. sponsored a survey of local residents and it showed that nearly 2/3 of them want the anthem sung, in defiance of this latest example of political correctness gone insane.

As you can imagine, Richmond Hill city council is feeling the heat from the media, residents and other Canadians.

I went to their most recent meeting to see for myself.

One highlight was local citizen Randy Taylor's address to the council as a concerned member of the public. It was pretty impressive!

This matter isn't resolved yet. I promise to keep you updated.

(PS: Don't miss what one councilor did at the start of the meeting...)

Ezra Levant’s book about the Canadian Human Rights Commissions, censorship and the Mohammed cartoons was voted "the best political book of the last 25 years."

Richmond Hill city council won’t sing O Canada because it contains the word “God.”

Menzies where are you?

He should have messed with their heads and played – the maple leaf forever – right afterwards – bagpipes and all

david, keep on hammering these bigots as hard as you can, most of us are right behind you. It is inconceivable that in these days this kind of obscenity still occurs, but what can expect from left leaning weenies.

Disgusting group! It pained them so much to bow to the national anthem. If you don’t want to stand, why did you do it? Afraid to stand, afraid to sit. They’re are a sorry bunch!

Yes Jan. exactly true. That guilt is mercy. The fear is pride. Some can’t sense it

If God doesn’t exist why then are atheists/secularists so worried/afraid offended of him ? Don’t see people raising any fuss about Santa , the easter bunny the tooth fairy, etc so why is it that an alleged myth bothers deniers so much ? Must be that battle between the subconsciousness and the rebelliousness constantly going on in the minds of those lacking discernment .

Dear Sir:

As a Canadian born & Proud British Loyalist I cannot support the issues of elimination of the Lords Prayer, never mind the elimination of the singing of Oh Canada. There can be no compromise with regards to this issue. In fact we should be singing God Save The Queen.
This country was founded by Christians. Having said that God is common to other cultures as well including Muslims and people of Jewish faith.
God is not a dirty word. Politician & Lawyers are becoming a dirty word in this country. The should be ashamed of themselves.
It is the politicians & lawyers that have betrayed every God loving person in this country.

I took an oath to serve: God; Queen & country when I was 6 years old and in cubs & boy scouts. I took my oath very seriously. It is just as relevant then as it is now. That oath was taken over 50 years ago and I am proud I took it.
The debate over the anthem or lords prayer being allowed is outrageous. It should be accepted without question. Anyone offended by this has the freedom to leave this country. In fact I would go as far as saying that those that disagree are guilty of treason and should be dealt with accordingly. At the very least fired from political office or position of authority. Did you notice the reluctance and slowness with which those member stood. It took the Mayor to say if they are going to play it we better stand. What a bunch of sheep! These members of council are a disgrace.

Terry Rudden; You sir have just outed yourself!
“But please – enough of this stupid, STUPID cheap pseudo-patriotism.”
You ought to be ashamed of yourself!
Most people here know you are a liberal troll and like all the liberal left, you hate the fact that our country was founded on and became as great as it did, because of those Christian moral principles. Most people here would debate you anyways – because of the moral integrity of conservatives. But you have put your foot in it now…shouting out your disdain for all the patriots and other lovers of Canada and all that is good in this country, for all of Canada and the world to see.
Your Words!!!
Now that more and more Canadians are waking up to the destructive agenda of the lefty wreckers of Canada, your days are numbered. My advice Mr. Terry- enough of this stupid, STUPID cheap pseudo-patriotism – Rudden, crawl back under that rock…

I’m not from Richmond Hill….but way to go Randy Taylor!!. Hope these people reconsider. Aren’t they proud of being Canadians? I’m an ‘adopted’ Canadian (I wasn’t born here) I’m proud of being Canadian. What example are they giving to new immigrants Most of us that have been here for a while (since 1971) learned to be grateful and proud, but they are giving the wrong impression…tsk tsk.

Thank-you Ezra Levant and David Menzies and great thanks to Randy Taylor for his immense self-control in presenting the mind of the Richmond Hill residents although it is an extremely upsetting, dangerous decision ! May I add that Richmond Hill city council need to sing O Canada – not just play an instrumental track!!!! May Richmond Hill vote that Mayor and that Councillor Hogg and the other anti-God councillors OUT! And all the otger city councils that foolishly and cowardly followed the Supreme Court’s wicked decision against prayer!!! (I hesistate to call this pagan unelected bunch supreme). May God have mercy on us and remove these non-representatives of our values!!!!!

Look at that bunch of lardy dictators. Two-third of the voters are against the decision, and in return they got the finger.
Noticed how two of them just walked past the reporter after he attempted to ask a few questions – as though they were gods?
Little arrogant nobodies, drowning in their own sickening notion of self-importance.

What a disgrace for our country some of us are! To those who are offended by the national anthem and/or by the word God, I think you are living in the wrong country. There is nothing sacrosanct anymore for the ‘bending over backwards to please everybody’ crowd in Canada.
I immigrated to this best country in the world eleven years ago and I am ashamed that any Canadian, citizen or otherwise categorized as living here, could ever have the gonads to insult the very fabric of this land and nation. God help us if any of the left leaning parties will get to form the federal government, come October!

Despicable cowards! With few exceptions, the Richmond Hill council is a fine example of politically correct, left wing, cowards, who openly spat in the face of every man and woman who sacrificed, some paying the ultimate sacrifice, for this country. Shame on them, cowards and low lives to the core!

LEAVE MY COUNTRY THE WAY IT WAS !!…on behalf of my father who fought in WWII, I am ashamed of these politicians who sit on council, especially Brenda Hog who is and acts like trailer trash. Please remove yourself and buy a house next to a military cemetery or military base and see how welcome you will be.
commented 2015-06-01 18:21:18 -0400
If I had been there, I would have belted out the words as loud as I could especially when the word “God” came up.
Plus I would have been hard pressed not to smack that Brenda woman for her apparent disrespect and eye rolling.

What a bunch of inconsiderate slobs on that council. My Great Grandfather earned a Victoria Cross in WW1 fighting for this country, his brother gave his life in the same war for this country. My sister defends this country as a Seaman in the RCN and my brother in law flies F-18’s and has served in Kosovo, Afghanistan and The Persian Gulf defending this country. Because of them and countless others you live in a beautiful country free of war and violence living peaceful lives. You have been elected by your fellow countrymen to represent them and yet you cannot find it in your heart or soul to stand up for your own national anthem?? First thing in my opinion is you should be fired from your positions and then tried for treason!! Disgusting, you are a disgusting lot!!

This is an important event. We have jihadists plotting against our country. We have soldiers being murdered. We have young women being swept into medieval Syria. And this city council is stupid enough to buy the anti-Canadian ideology that drives their “legal” staff?
commented 2015-06-01 17:10:51 -0400
I’m an atheist, and could care less that the word god is mentioned in our National Anthem.

I’m highly offended by this P.C. bullshit that is so out of hand that people are cowering in fear that we may offend some people by singing our anthem.

Those that find offence in our anthem, can quite frankly shove it where the sun don’t shine.

Kudos to Taylor and the Counsellor who had the gonads to play O Canada. I notices that the mainstream media reported the ban when it happened but certainly are not following up on the will of the people and what is happening now. Typical media.
commented 2015-06-01 16:50:19 -0400
These councillors, if they had any balls, would disregard this decision, and stand proud and ‘sing’ the national anthem. Thankfully you can’t be arrested for singing the national anthem (not yet, anyway). And I can’t imagine a councillor being removed from his elected post for singing the anthem. Stand up, be proud and unafraid, to sing the dam song!!!!! This is terribly offensive to the Christian community to have the word “God” removed. Does anybody care about the Christian faith, that this country was founded on???
commented 2015-06-01 16:37:17 -0400
This country and it’s ‘political correct’ stupidity is getting out of hand. We all know that government is caving to the demands of atheists and muslims, over the matter of the word ‘GOD’. I fail to see what damage this causes. Are we going to have to whisper the word ‘God’, in private so as not to hurt somebody’s sensibilities. THIS is CANADA, not a foreign land. As a Canadian, I am constantly, probably daily, offended by this idiotic political correctness. Will somebody please standup to this ridiculous nonsense??!?
commented 2015-06-01 11:32:15 -0400
Yes, that strategy sounds more reflective of a spirit deeply grounded in Christian humility.
commented 2015-05-31 16:08:51 -0400
So I guess I’ll have to resort to just shaking my head rather than speculating on how arrogant and insolent you appear to me
commented 2015-05-31 10:48:58 -0400
Well, your first sentence is correct, anyway.
commented 2015-05-30 16:12:58 -0400
Sorry Terry, I don’t presume to know Gods intentions nor am I able to judge you. All I can do is to quote Jesus Christ who seemed to know God better than anyone. He said; “Those who don’t believe are already damned”. My only desire is to convert you,it sure would be nice to have you on our side. Then I could learn from you.
commented 2015-05-30 09:31:51 -0400
Ron; certainly from a communications and PR perspective the story was not well handled, I agree. On the other hand, a municipal council with serious business to transact can’t be expected to pay a lot of attention to a glorified ideological blog that decides to make them the Villain Du Jour.
