We’ve been saying for a while that we need to clean up Canadian politics by shutting down foreign money from groups like the TIDES Foundation but we also need to change the rules for what third parties can do in elections.
A while back, my fellow Rebel Christopher Wilson started a petition to get TIDES money out of BC politics, where it looks like they just had a major impact on the election.
Now I want to take this national.
The foreign money from groups like TIDES and the Oaks Foundation out of Switzerland, not to mention international labour unions funnelling money into Canadian political causes, is used to ensure that conservatives or free enterprise oriented parties are never elected again.
Watch as I explain the problem and then fill you in on what we can do about it.
Even in the U.S., land of big money politics and free speech, the types of groups that run similar campaigns are regulated.
Canada has long had third party restrictions in elections and attempts to challenge them in court — such as Stephen Harper and the NCC’s Supreme Court challenge — have failed.
So if we are going to have regulations on third parties, let’s make them count.
If you agree, I’m going to ask you to sign our petition at TidesOut.ca and call on the federal government to fix this.
And while you’re there I’m going to ask that you consider chipping in a donation to The Rebel so we can continue to follow stories like this.
You won’t see this on CBC with their billion dollar subsidy. We are entirely supported by you, our viewers, so if you like what we do then please donate so we can keep doing the work the other guys won’t.
