One of my favorite cartoons showed Moses on the mountain with the Ten Commandments. The caption said, “A great idea, who is going to fund it?” The point, when applied to almost anything including politics, is that the ultimate control is financial control. Distribution of taxing powers determines who ultimately controls. In Canada, the result over time is power and control of individual citizens lives steadily moved from the municipal government to the federal government. It is time to reverse this trend.

The Vatican released its full Encyclical titled Laudato Si, subtitled “On care for our common home”, on Thursday, 18 June 2015. The preamble claims the world is in serious trouble because of human activity. It is an emotional claim without evidence or substance. The church is as wrong on the science today as it was when it condemned Galileo 400 years ago almost to the month.

The headline read: “Liberal MPs hold press conference on muzzling of scientists.” As usual, the headline differs from the story. The real story is the most egregious use of bureaucrat scientists for a political agenda in Canadian history. It is part of a larger problem of bureaucrats establishing policy and running governments. Mary McCarthy explains, “Bureaucracy, the rule of no one, has become the modern form of despotism.”

Derek Bok, the former president of Harvard University, once said that if you think education is expensive try ignorance. A rarely considered or measured cost is exploitation of ignorance. Confidence tricksters use people’s limitations to take advantage. Global warming is just another example, albeit the largest in history, because the entire world was fooled. Few can explain the greenhouse effect and most who think they can get it wrong because the Earth’s atmosphere does not work like a greenhouse.

Humans are bundles of contradictions who do and say things with little thought or understanding of the illogic involved. It is not part of Shakespeare’s observation, “What a piece of work is a man…” but should be.

Evidence abounds that taking money from one group and giving it to another does not work. Redistribution is the basic belief of Marxism, socialism, and liberalism and appears in various forms. Instead of solving problems of inequality it prevents the problems being identified or resolved, and those responsible being held accountable.

The climate picture is confusing as evidence mounts that the claim of human (anthropogenic) caused global warming (AGW) is wrong yet almost daily headlines suggest it isn’t. There always was a war, but it is intensifying because the Climate Conference scheduled for Paris in November 2015 is likely the last chance for some form of international climate agreement.
