Today in History: Ascending the Jungfrau “a triumph of the human spirit” (1811)

John RobsonArchive

Making the first ascent of the third highest peak in the Bernese Alps on August 3, 1811 isn’t exactly a Stanley Cup three-peat.

It might feel more like that infamous Monopoly thing where you win second prize in a beauty contest and get ten bucks.

But in fact, to have made it up an uncharted peak with a random group of servants, guides, and hunters wearing wool jackets and leather shoes is a triumph of the human spirit.

We can’t all be Sir Edmund Hillary. But we can all reach peaks in our personal lives.
