Today in History: Nazi death camp Belzec opens (1942)

John RobsonArchive

March 17 is the sombre anniversary of the beginning of operations at Belzec in 1942.

It’s one of the Nazi death camps like Sobibor, Chelmno and others, whose names are less well known than “concentration camps” including Auschwitz where inmates were gradually worked to death as well as being swiftly exterminated, because it had almost no survivors.

And it reminds us that evil is not some relic of our savage past but something that has accompanied mankind throughout its material progress, finding new tools as we become more technically advanced, lodged always in the human heart.

@lloyd Nolan I am glad that your parents met and helped beat the Nazi war machine . You are proof that good things can happen out of evil . I didn’t mean to offend you . My two great uncles died fighting the Nazis and they never got to enjoy the freedoms that we have today . Its sad that everyday we lose freedoms that they died for .

It was the pope and the German government that instigated the Balkans war,___ so Germans could have a sea port amongst other things. The west was against it at first, but caved into German pressure.

Thanks the other info Glen Craig !

You’re right we must never forget, … but Muslim lovers and pro-palestinians will.

I just got back from New York where I spent some time at the World Trade Centre memorial and museum. The words that kept coming back to me were from the prophet Jeremiah, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can understand it”. Jesus said, “The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy but I have come that you might have life and have it abundantly”.

Without doubt your hardcore Pro-Hamas progressive would open these camps in a heartbeat to cure the “Zionist” problem

I wish John Robson did more of these segments. In fact, it would be nice if he had his own show.

You might also find this interesting reading….

The Germans recruited Chechens as well and Stalin exiled them to Siberia as punishment. After the fall of the Soviet Union they were allowed to return. The Boston marathon bombers are Chechens but for the life of me I cannot understand how their grudge against Russia justifies what they did in Boston.

The break-up of the former Yugoslavia was Christian against muslim and all based on WW2 grudges.

I grew up next door to a Syrian family….meteorologist Peter Coade married the oldest daughter in that family and my older brother was best friends of the oldest boy…..the father was proud of his Syrian heritage and I could nevr imagine myself being leary of admitting Syrians to Canada….but they were Roman Catholic.

This new batch I am frankly quite leary of…CBS can check their luggage and effects for weapons….but how does one check the “baggage” in that intangible realm called “the mind”. If they are fleeing ISIS …fine….if they are fleeing Assad because they are supporters of ISIS …..that’s not fine.

And since we are remembering history my favourite story about Marshall Tito was that tthe muslims serving in the SS made a grand parade entrance into the town where Tito’s partizans were holed up. Tito was in an attic along with a sniper. The commander of the Hanchars drove into the main square in a Mercedes staff car with open top. He stood up and with Mussolini style body language announced that there would be 10 reprisals for each of his men killed. Tito turned to the sniper and said “shoot that man” the sniper asked puzzled “right now sir?”….“right now”

The Turkish style black fez with Nazi eagle and SS insignia is on display in a museum in Zagreb with a bullet hole in it.
