Today in History: “Rolls” meets “Royce” in a Manchester hotel (1904)

John RobsonArchive

On May 4 of 1904 two men met in a Manchester hotel. It was not the stuff of headlines… at the time.

But Charles Edward Rolls and Frederick Henry Royce would create the most recognizable luxury brand in the world.

Through many trials and tribulations including nationalization by the British government in the 1970s, Rolls-Royce cars remain an emblem of the almost absurd degree to which humans pursue excellence amid the often brutal chaos of life.

To paraphrase t The Hobbit:

“As John spoke the hobbit felt the love of beautiful things made by hands and by cunning and by magic moving through him, a fierce and a jealous love, the desire of the hearts of dwarves.”

Thanks John Robson.
I had the pleasure of enjoying a Rolls Royce several years ago – I was in a wedding party, and, the father of the bride surprised us with the most luxurious ride of my life. I will always remember that beautiful car.
