2. EU, UN back illegal mass migration, says Hungarian government

Hungarian government spokesman Zoltán Kovács has said pro-migration proposals agreed by the UN and EU show they “are serious about legalising illegal migration, contrary to the will of the people.”

“Now it’s there in black and white: the European Union and the United Nations have thrown their weight behind a global movement that promotes immigration, that sees it as good and a necessary remedy for correcting the EU’s sad demographic course,” Mr Kovács wrote in response to UN members signing the Global Compact for Migration and the European Parliament giving the go-ahead to instituting “humanitarian visas” for migrants last week.

“The UN migration pact is a betrayal of European citizens and fails to represent their interests,” the senior minister said, adding that the document “works from the premise that migration ranks among fundamental human rights.”

3. Dozens of bodies “found in IS mass grave” in Iraq

Iraqi authorities have uncovered a new mass grave containing the remains of dozens of people in an area of northern Kirkuk province once held by the Islamic State group.

4. Morocco warns Germany of a potential terror attack at Stuttgart Airport

German police are now looking for four suspected members of ISIS, following a trail from Moroccan intelligence services.

Rabat – Morocco’s intelligence services have warned Germany of a potential terror attack at Stuttgart airport.

Moroccan intelligence intercepted suspicious phone calls between two individuals about a future attack and immediately informed their German counterparts of their suspicions and the suspects’ names.

The German television channel SWR reported that the two suspects were heard planning an attack while surveying Stuttgart airport.

According to the suspects’ phone calls, their motive was revenge against Western policies.

“They are waging war against Islam; my brothers and I are here to fight them,” said one suspect over the phone. “Will I be alone?” asked a suspect. “No, we are many,” the second responded.

5. Denmark charges man for plotting terror attack

A 31-year-old man has been charged with planning to explode bombs in Copenhagen and stabbing random people with kitchen knives, Danish prosecutors said.

Prosecutor Anders Riisager says the man, who was not identified, “had participated in ordering components that would be used to produce one or more bombs.”

The man was charged with attempting to carry out acts of terrorism and, if found guilty, he faces up to life in prison. [...]

The man worked with an accomplice, Dieab Khadigah, who was sentenced by a German court in July 2017 to six-and-a-half years in prison.

Khadigah was arrested in November 2016 in the northern German port town of Puttgarten as he attempted to board a ferry for Denmark. His backpack contained 17,000 matches, 17 batteries, fireworks, two large kitchen knives and six walkie-talkies that the 31-year-old man had ordered.

Riisager said the sulfur from the matches was to be used in bombs.

6. DARKNESS FALLS IN WINDSOR, ONTARIO: Habibullah Ahmadi now charged with murder of Anne Widholm

“Sara Anne Widholm, 76, died at Windsor Regional Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 15,” the Windsor Star reports, but this was not a mere obituary. On October 8, 2017, while out for a walk on the Ganatchio Trail in Windsor, Widholm was the victim of a “vicious” and “unprovoked” attack by Habibullah Ahmadi, 21.

He was originally charged with assault, later upgraded to attempted murder and now second-degree murder with the death of his victim. Little has emerged about Habibullah Ahmadi and his motive in the attack, which was “not just another assault,” according to neurosurgeon Dr. Balraj Jhawar.

“The worst skull fractures I’ve seen in my 12 years here in Windsor,” Jhawar told reporters. “This is among the most brutal things I’ve seen in my career.” The victim’s multiple brain hemorrhages and fractured skull and vertebrae required eight hours of surgery. Hospital officials did not indicate whether Widholm emerged from a coma before she finally passed away.

Attacker Habibullah Ahmadi was 21, a full adult, but police never released his booking photo. News reports described him as a “Windsor man,” who goes by the name “Daniel.”

Local and national news stories contained no statements from Habibullah Ahmadi, nor any indication that he had declined an interview. Likewise, news reports contained no quotes from Habibullah Ahmadi’s family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, or fellow students in Windsor. [...]

Last January, an 11-year-old Toronto girl charged that a man had twice cut her hijab. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced the attack, which turned out to be a hoax. The son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau had nothing to say about the attack on Anne Widholm, which was not a hoax.

10. Denmark passes law requiring handshake to gain citizenship

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) – Denmark has adopted a law requiring anyone who becomes a Danish citizen to shake hands at the naturalization ceremony. The move is widely seen as aimed at some Muslims who for religious reasons decline to touch members of the opposite sex.

In a 55-23 vote with 30 lawmakers abstaining, the law was adopted in Parliament on Thursday.

Lawmakers also approved funding for a plan to banish rejected asylum-seekers or those with a criminal record to an island.
