Kennewick police identified the man wielding a sword who was shot and killed by officers Sunday night.
Hussein Hassan, 46, of Kennewick, was walking on Olympia Street near 10th Avenue with the sword about 6:30 p.m. Witnesses said he seemed to be trying to hide the weapon with a newspaper.
When Kennewick Officer Jason Kiel got out of his car to talk with him, Hassan charged and started hitting Kiel in the head with the sword.
Just then, a second officer, Joshua Kuhn arrived. Kiel managed to pull back and both policemen drew their weapons and fired at Hassan.
Hassan was taken to Trios Southridge Hospital, where he died, said a police news release. Kiel suffered a head injury and was treated at Trios and later released.

4. Westerners kinder to migrants when given “love hormone” oxytocin
WESTERN people can be made more charitable to migrants by feeding them the “love hormone” oxytocin and exposing them to peer pressure, German scientists have claimed.
Researchers from the University of Bonn said that humans tend to be generally kinder to friends and family than strangers.
But this natural tendency can be overridden by getting humans to take oxytocin and then setting up a “social norm” which pushes people into accepting migrants.
“The combined enhancement of oxytocin and peer influence could diminish selfish motives,” said Professor Rene Hurlemann from the department of psychiatry.
‘Given the right circumstances, oxytocin may help promote the acceptance and integration of migrants into Western cultures.’”

Unemployed Jimmy Lamb, 24, then stood on the street in Newcastle and Gateshead, before being arrested on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred.
Jimmy said, ‘I saw the stories in the papers about the grooming gang. I thought to myself, this is one race chasing another race because they think that race is inferior.
‘It frustrated me no-one would describe these people as Muslim, only Asian. I wanted to raise awareness that this is a serious issue and it is not going to go away.'
6. TERROR THREAT: Al-Qaeda urges jihadis to attacks US, European railways
TERROR group al-Qaeda has urged its militants to target the “unguarded” US and European railways in a sickening new publication.
The latest issue of al-Qaeda’s magazine suggested jihadis should target American and European trains as they have “lax” security and a single attack could cause “large amounts of destruction and disruption”.
The vile magazine includes blueprints for attacks and advice from a senior explosives expert from the al-Qaeda faction in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)
A third article provides a map of the United States and recommends specific transit systems as targets, including the New York metro.
7. Oldham, UK: Taxi driver jailed after sex attack on girl, 14
A TAXI driver who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl had been granted a taxi licence despite Oldham Council being made aware of a previous conviction for indecent assault.
Moshraf Ali (52) was jailed for 12 months after being convicted of sexual assault and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years after being found guilty of one count of sexual assault at a trial at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court.
Ali, of Hilltop Drive, Royton, was granted a licence to drive taxis by the council in 2003, despite the panel being made aware he had been conditionally discharged for indecent assault in 2001.
Councillor Barbara Brownridge, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and co-operatives, said: "This is completely unacceptable. We take offences like this very seriously.
"Ali was granted with a warning over future conduct as members were aware he had been conditionally discharged for indecent assault in 2001. Guidelines have changed since then. Under our current process he would not have been granted a licence.”
