Toronto Mayor John Tory “virtue signalling” over Edmonton Eskimos name

Holly NicholasRebel Commentator

Toronto Mayor John Tory, a former CFL commissioner, is calling for the Edmonton Eskimos to change their name to something that he thinks the public would find less offensive

The term Eskimo has been deemed derogatory, given by non-Inuit’s to Yupik and Inuit people meaning “eater of raw meat”. But now linguists believe the word is derived from an Ojibwa term meaning “to net snowshoes” and some Inuit actually prefer being called Eskimos.

Some argue that it’s disrespectful, but it’s not meant to be – those native themed names are being used in the context that these groups are heroic.

These divisive issues really just boil down to virtue signalling. It’s something normal people don’t really care about and it’s beginning to show as we see NFL ratings plummet in the wake of Colin Kaepernick’s stunt to sit out the national anthem in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

No sports fan wants their sports news being clouded over by political causes that are piggy backing on these teams.

This isn’t the first time there have been calls for the Eskimos to change their name. Just last year, they were also asked by a group representing the Canadian Inuit population.

However, the team’s President says there are no plans to make that change and he affirms that the name is actually a positive representation.

As for Mayor John Tory, surely he knows there are more important issues facing Torontonians?

I object to the name Argonauts as Greek-centric, Alouettes as French-centric, Lions as cat-centric, Blue Bombers as war-centric, Stampeders as cowboy-centric, and Rough Riders for simply stealing the Ottawa name.

For crying out loud deal with real problems Tory!

Anyone who watches football – a manly physical match of strategy and strength, could care less what snowflakes who are not predisposed to watch sports think. Pussy fart moralists have been trying get the Eskimos to change their name for years and each year they pack the stadium and revenues are better each year – the only thing I have against the Eskimos is they have an over rated metrosexual for a QB – but they do provide good practice for Calgary on our way to the Grey cup.

John Tory, keep on showing us what a gutless loser you really are. Honestly I can’t believe these guys, they are the ones who are offensive!

Garbage like this is how you get the pathetic name like the Ottawa Red-Blacks where the league is scared to offend anyone who can remotely attach themselves to the name.

What about the Minnesota Vikings or the Notre Dame Fighting Irish? As the article mentions these names were chosen because they were warriors. You don’t see a team called the Toronto Choir Boys do you.

The term “political correctness” in its infancy may have connoted some congeniality , a sense that some terms used could be less than cultured , violating the politeness associated with the cocktail party or dinner table.
In its maturity however, PC has become nothing but a mask , hiding some very malicious intents aimed at infringing on free speech and the liberty to express our opinions , free from contrived shock and indignation that the socialists use to gin up controversy.
PC needs to become exposed for exactly what it is. PC is actually FSI , Free Speech Infringement or even better FSS , Free Speech Suppression.
Political correctness does not sound the least bit intimidating. But when exposed using words like infringement or suppresson , it certainly evokes a different emotion. The emotion of fear for our freedom of speech and our liberty.

Why do the useless always try to project their lies and BS on others? “Virtue bullies” can’t stand to keep their long noses out of other people’s business. They are big uncontrollable babies, who want everyone to do what they say. People like Tory are an embarrassment to the human race.

Well, I think it’s time for a name change alright, but for totally different reasons. I mean, look at the way Edmonton voted in the last election. Tell, me, what does a population that needs its arses wiped and tears dried have to do with Eskimos; tough, smart, resourceful people who uncomplainingly take care of themselves.

I mean, if I was an Eskimo, I’d be so embarrassed being associated to Edmonton that I’d want them to change their name to something more fitting. The Edmonton Lollipops, or the Edmonton Tickle-me-Elmos, or Papooses….something that is more representative of the voters.

There is an underlying theme behind all of this-and I am almost certain that most of us who actually think about it will agree-first and foremost this type of issue takes away from the real problems that are present-no jobs, homelessness, poverty, the growing need for need many to rely on food banks, and the list goes on and on, AND the fact that the governments of today are in for TOTAL CONTROL of us. Just my opinion.

The name, corporate logo & mascot are all racist, sexist, homophobic & derogatory; they must MUST change.

In the meantime, that team should be referred to as either Team CFL Edmonton or the Edmonton E’s

Tory, you are OK when you keep your pie-hole closed. It is none of your damn business what Edmonton calls their team, let them figure it out. Now go back to sleep.

Hey John Tory, BITE ME!! What a moron!!

Hell I find the names Trudeau, Notely and Wynne very offensive, so much so that just changing them will not appease me. I think Trudeau, Notely and Wynne should leave Canada. If they are not in Canada then the names will not be so offensive.
I also think that D.H. CHAISSON should join them.

Shh, don’t tell the Muslims that Toronto is the HOG TOWN, they might move to Mississauga or Brampton. And btw how offensive is an Argo? Or wtf is an Argo. Or by boatmen does that mean they’re slaves that row boats?

@egil Lomeland….jeez I know what you mean brother…if I won a trip there as a doorprize I wouldn’t bother going….how do you know you are in Toronto?….you walk into a Walmart and the greeter tells you to fuck off………:-)

I find his name offensive! Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more retarded in the world than this . Where do they find these mental midgets ?

I still want a response on the incredibly barbaric name of the Saskatchewan town of Indian Head! Off to the HRC for all of Saskatchewan for not jumping on this sooner. Make the swine pay! Isn’t that what social justice is all about?

I find the name Toronto offensive.

Tory should be concerned about the lack of tourists in Toronto; I could be wrong if the people wearing Burkas are tourists.

How about changing Alberta to an independent nation.

Tory was Conservative when he was in the Provincial Legislature. Now that he’s finally actually been elected as Mayor of Toronto, he’s more Liberal than anything else. What a disappointment!

I still think that naming a sports team after Indians, Eskimos, etc. would be appealing to a lot of men and they wouldn’t see it as a slight in the least.

You have to remember that Generation Snowflake takes offence to a lot of things that wouldn’t even phase anyone else.

As posted before, the Ottawa Red-Blacks have to change their name as being offensive to mongrels. They even came up with this racist name in 2014, which was only one year before “because it’s 2015” and it is now 2016, pending the LPC government inquiry into year date (I am still not convinced it is 2016 because Baby Doc has not made the pronouncement like he did for 2015).

So let us see this racist team name, Red-Black, be the first to change, because it was the most recent racist team name established. That will point the way to Edmonton.

By the way, did not the Dene Ta come up with the name because the Eskimos kept beating them into submission, turned them into slaves; hence their former name Slavey.

But I digress, end the racist anti-mongrel team name.

So instead of fixing Toronto and all its massive problems ,lets hop on the band wagon and do the easy thing and shake our little inept finger at Edmonton and take the heat of me. This is so much easier than what I’m suppose to do.

@ken Hanson….in case you didn’t know why the letters CH are painted in the middle of the rink in the Montreal forum, it stands for “center hice”……….:-)

@dh…How about the George Soros Schmucks for the name of your team….bet that will raise a smile from Ezra Levant….:-)

I still think we should appease Jewish athletes with names such as Washington Big Noses or Boston Bagel Dogs.
