Toronto Mayor John Tory, a former CFL commissioner, is calling for the Edmonton Eskimos to change their name to something that he thinks the public would find less offensive.
The term Eskimo has been deemed derogatory, given by non-Inuit’s to Yupik and Inuit people meaning “eater of raw meat”. But now linguists believe the word is derived from an Ojibwa term meaning “to net snowshoes” and some Inuit actually prefer being called Eskimos.
Some argue that it’s disrespectful, but it’s not meant to be – those native themed names are being used in the context that these groups are heroic.
These divisive issues really just boil down to virtue signalling. It’s something normal people don’t really care about and it’s beginning to show as we see NFL ratings plummet in the wake of Colin Kaepernick’s stunt to sit out the national anthem in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.
No sports fan wants their sports news being clouded over by political causes that are piggy backing on these teams.
This isn’t the first time there have been calls for the Eskimos to change their name. Just last year, they were also asked by a group representing the Canadian Inuit population.
However, the team’s President says there are no plans to make that change and he affirms that the name is actually a positive representation.
As for Mayor John Tory, surely he knows there are more important issues facing Torontonians?
