Toronto Star, Tony Burman should apologize for calling Harper "a bigger threat" than ISIS -- but here's why they won't

Brian LilleyArchive

Tony Burman ran CBC's news department before he went to work at Al Jazeera English. So it's no surprise that he just wrote an op-ed for the Toronto Star saying Harper is more dangerous than ISIS.

It's another example of "Harper Derangement Syndrome," and it matters.

For one thing, the Toronto Star is Canada's largest paper, read by hundreds of millions of voters.

What's also scary is that Burman teaches journalism at Ryerson University!

PS: The coalition heading up the fight against ISIS is led by Barack Obama, who is hardly some crazed right winger...

This Tony Burman doesn’t know what he is talking about Mr. Harper and even comparing him to ISIS. Really what planet is this man on? It’s typical that he is now associated with al Jazeera news. He is wrong as ISIS be heads and kills many people who are in their way. Mr. Harper doesn’t even come close to that. I should cancel my subscription to the Star. Anyways I hate CBC News I really never watch it unless I can’t help it when Im in my Barber shop. He watches CBC News . He’s Russian anyways so I expect nothing less. I have spoken. I will support Mr. Harper in the next election.

The greater problem is the derangement that the Red Star transfers to its readers.
commented 2015-08-19 12:01:54 -0400
The thought process of Tony Burman should be a ‘must’ study for those that probe a deranged mind.

Tell Burman to ‘inform’ Khaled Asaad. Oh, that’s right. He can’t, because ‘Khaled Asaad’ gave his life to protect Palmyra and the artifacts found there from the representatives of the religion of peace who are presently going around the middle east blowing up our common heritage. Mr Burman, ‘Khaled Asaad’ was something you will never be; a man. Two things actually; he was also a victim of your peace loving muslims whom you defend so rabidly. There is little point having the Star apologize for Burman as their apologies are meaningless.

Harper is not a bigger threat to our Canadian rights and freedoms. You, sir, and the slugs you travel with are.

Unfortunately, many low or no information voters use the Star as their only source of news. Send the HRC after Burman for his misinformation. Oh wait, this isn’t a perfect world. They wouldn’t even look at it!

……….and Burman teaches journalism at Ryerson University! Really. Sadly, like lambs being led to slaughter, far too many people will read and take to heart his comments. It simply bewilders me that journalists can get away with pretty much anything and never be held to the notion of truth.

I guess Harper is crucifying Christians, throwing Gays off tall buildings, selling and rapping Christian girls and women, destroying historical artifacts, cities, cultures and religions, beheading captives, and has aims for world domination.

Oh yeah and Obama is a republican and is actually not leading the charge of bombing ISIS!

Horrible, horrible article

Dumped the Star years ago. They keep calling and leaving thus garbage on my driveway. I guess they don’t get the message.

Seriously? Toronto Star! Harper is more of a threat than ISIS? On what planet?!
Stupid partisan liberal Journalism. The reason I NEVER read the TORONTO STAR!! Outlandish claims like this makes it a write-off for me! Disgraceful and sickening! Worst part some gullible Ontarians (and Canadians) will buy into this rubbish!

When the media campaigns relentlessly in an election through their biased coverage of the news with respect to the party leaders, our country is in a downward spiral towards an erosion of democracy. “The pen is mightier than the sword”!

Dresdin Archibald said, ““For one thing, the Toronto Star is Canada’s largest paper, read by hundreds of millions of voters.””

At 1:14 Brian said, “… quite literally by hundreds of thousands…”, not hundreds of millions"

You should listen more closely. Just a suggestion.

“For one thing, the Toronto Star is Canada’s largest paper, read by hundreds of millions of voters.”
I hope you are being facetious. “Hundreds of millions”. Where are they all hiding? There are only 36 million in Canada, not all of voting age, and thankfully, not all of them agreeable to the Star.

When Newspapers allow their columnists and even their editorial writers to write blatant lies, personality slanders, obscenities, and portrait factually incorrect fiction as fact; why are the owners and editors of these Newspapers permitted to hide behind the name of their organization, for example the Toronto Star, while permitting their minions to mislead, misinform and brainwash the public. Why are these elites allowed to remain unknown to the public, and never be held accountable for, if not illegal activity, at the very least immoral, unethical leadership of a News Organization. I think that none of them have ever understood that Free Speech including Freedom of the Press has boundaries. Freedom of any sort without boundaries just becomes chaos.
We can disagree about the unprofessional materials that some reporters produce, but it’s the editors and owners who have allowed this irresponsible behavior to flourish. Who are they, and let’s see their background and associations and what they look like should they ever drive by in their limousines.

Of course we have nothing to fear as long as we, like the media, remain silent and agreeably positive about Islam, we will be ALLOWED TO LIVE by Muslim extremists…Unlike the man of courage and truth: Rushdie, who daily fears for his life for writing a book. Instead, we ALL have to fear for our lives…NOT BECAUSE OF HARPER but because the media has taken the side of ISIS and capitulated to their COMMANDS like dutiful unionized jihadis. But for us, just like Rushdie, we are forced to live in obedient silence, under fatwa, a life of fear and cowardice. Whatever happened to “give me liberty or give me death”…that is my desire…instead, these journalists are just DREADFULLY AFRAID OF ISIS and they are willing to give up liberty in order to live…that is why they want our government to be quiet and bow to ISIS like they do. But WE WILL NOT BOW TO THE GOLDEN CALF of Islamist extremism…you can if you want to Toronto Star, CBC, CTV and all you other cowards who are just too afraid to tell the truth…go hide your ostrich heads in the sand…better yet…go home and give us a break from your scandalous hypocrisy…unionized minions pretending to be journalists…pretending to be impartial…yeah! Paid, “useful idiots” for the cause of terrorism…your complicity in terrorism, such as Tony Burman’s misguided rant, guarantees to set us up for a takeover… I am so thankful that our Prime Minister has the courage to fight these monsters, and the grace to embrace Muslims who are here to find peace…There is only one sane voice in this election and all they can do is harangue him about trying to get a senator to be honest about his finances…now that is hypocrisy from the media…and a disgrace.

Folks, the blatant lying happens every day on CTV, Global (I don’t even know what channel CBC is) – the innuendo and twisted truth and will probably get worse as we get closer to election day but just continue to be proud Canadians and don’t fall for their tricks – vote Conservative, go Canada go.

Burman is one who is so blind he cannot see. Sad, sad sad.
commented 2015-08-17 22:08:14 -0400
Toronto Star is not welcome in my home. You should follow my lead, Brian. That paper is absolute garbage. For this reason, I haven’t listened to Burman’s comments.

Burman is a radical and a fool . . . anyone who worked for Al Jazeera has a shortage of brain cells . . .

Burman thinks that kissing Terrorist’s arse, will gain votes for his Commie, Bed Mates. Kissing Terrorist’s Butt’s is illegal, under Sharia Law. If your Left Wingnuts gain power, Sharea Law will be the Law of the Land but the Terrorist’s will be doing more, than just kissing your arse. What a pity.

What I would like to see is those people that blatantly lie like Tony has taken to court for slander and/or defamation.

It seems that these people can get away with saying anything they like. Now I understand freedom of speech, but when they intentionally misrepresent the truth, they need to be held accountable, not by the law (because that would be legislating restriction to speech which I disagree with), but in court action.

Tony Burman is not only putting in his bias into his writing, he is outright blatantly lying. It is easily provable that Harper is not at all dangerous, let alone more dangerous than ISIS.

The statement is so blatantly ridiculous that Tony Burman is probably doing himself and the Toronto “Red” Star more of a disservice than convincing anyone that Harper is so dangerous. The only people that Tony could possibly convince are those already inflicted with HDS or those too stupid to think for themselves.
commented 2015-08-17 18:31:53 -0400
Tony Burman and the Toronto Star really are dangerous propagandaists’ as is a lot of MSM they have let their own interpretations of what they desire rule and affect their Journalism, they are writing their bias into what is supposed to be unbiased news reporting by professionals! This is no longer the case!

Rob Mander, I really have to say you bring up some topic… This is a topic that will have some people saying your crazy, while having others say you are right on target… For me I don’t believe in racist / racism because I believ all people are the same… If I take a brown, white, or black skin person and put a gun to their head and squeeze the trigger don’t they all die…

I truthfully believe if the PC’s win a majority again we should shut down the CBC

“then we all deserve the absolutely fkg pain that will follow”
Vlad, I am not my brothers’ keeper, nor do I want someone to be my keeper. If they (that vote left) are that stupid then it is unfortunate that the rest will suffer as a consequence, but we (that do not vote ndp/lib) DO NOT deserve that pain !!

Opinions like Burman’s make me sad for a generation that makes light of genocide.
commented 2015-08-17 17:09:05 -0400
No surprise coming from a former head of the CBC.

Sad that the Journalists coming out of the Ryerson program will have Burman’s taint on them. is an interesting read…
