Toronto Yezidi leader: ISIS is "a disease that must be destroyed" overseas -- before it comes to Canada

Marissa SemkiwArchive

I spoke to Mirza Ismail, a leader of Toronto's Yezidi people, about the plight of Yezidis in Iraq -- including his own family, who were forced from their home and are now living in tents in Northern Iraq.

He believes the rest of the media "doesn't show even five percent of what is going on there."

Ismail also talks about Canada's involvement in the region. This couldn't be more timely, because next week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper will seek Parliament’s approval to extend and expand Canada’s mission against the Islamic State in Iraq.

New Democrat Leader Thomas Mulcair has already declared his opposition to any involvement of Canadian troops in “what is simply not our war.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations human rights office said on Thursday that Islamic State fighters have committed genocide in trying to wipe out the minority Yezidi community in Iraq as well as crimes against civilians including children.

Good job! An interview with this man by Canadian media was long overdue.

Wow great job. Where do you come up with this stuff? He’s right. We need to be proactive.

I can’t state strongly enough how absolutely selfish and disgusting Mulcair’s position is! It’s just evil! If we’re not willing to step up to the plate when innocent lives are at risk, whatever ethnicity those lives happen to be, then we have no right to expect help from anyone when it’s our lives on the line. Mulcair, you’re pathetic!

Mulcair, I cannot state what I think of you and Mr. Trudeau.
But I will say that YOU understand little, and we DO NOT WANT YOU and your ignorant representatives
speaking for this country! Go find a tree to hug.

I am always curious as to what Mulcair and the NDP would consider “our war” – would WW2 qualify I wonder.

We must be careful to observe the proper Rules of Engagement in dealing with ISIS and other Islamic fanatics. There are two Rules:
1. Kill them all.
2. When in doubt about the Rules of Engagement, see Rule #1.
ps: We are glad you and your family are safely here, Mr. Ismail.

This story needs to get out to all Canadians as it puts a human face to the tragedy that is ongoing in the Middle East. I hope he and his family stay safe and are reunited. Thanks Marissa for the great coverage.

What a gracious man Mirza Ismail is. Thanks, Marissa, for introducing him and for bringing us his story. Hopefully the opposition will get on board to support an extension of our involvement in the fight against Daesh that is now in Africa and Yemen, not far from the Pope and the Saudi royal family. Not to mention their threat to Jordan and to Israel. This is a human crisis, not one we can turn a blind eye to. Humanitarian aid alone will only help the Daesh kill and bury or burn or leave to rot in the streets more innocent victims.

Once again, the only place to get real news on real world issues in The Rebel. Thank you for the good work Marissa.

@roy The sad part is, justin and mulcair only pay attention to what is ANTI-harper. The needs, wants, views, safety, etc., of all Canadians, don’t matter to them, and mainstream merely regurgitates their anti-harper rhetoric.

Wow, Awesome report. He’s right, there has been nor will be any truthful reporting in the West save for Fox and now The Rebel. Thanks for bringing this story to Canadian audiences ms. Semkiw. Hopefully enough people will take the time to learn some of what is happening to these people so they can speak up and act in the name of humanity.
